THEY ARE VERY FAMILIAR WITH THE PROCESS. THIS WAS THE FIRST YEAR THAT THEY HAVE MANAGED TO GET GRANTS TO ALL 22 SCHOOLS SO WE HAVE TWO GRANT WINNERS HERE TODAY. SARAH IS A TEACHER DEVELOPMENT SPECIALIST AND THE WE HAVE JENNIFER HARTMAN WHO IS A MEDIA SPECIALIST AND THEY WILL COME UP AND TALK ABOUT THE PROJECTS. WE DO HAVE A QUICK VIDEO FOR YOU TO WATCH.

TAKE IT A STEP FURTHER. >> HAMILTON SOUTHEASTERN EDUCATION FOUNDATION HAS BEEN A DRIVING FORCE, INVESTING NEARLY $2 MILLION IN STUDENT LEARNING AND TO FOSTER INNOVATIVE TEACHING PROCESSES.

>> WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT WE ARE DOING WHAT WE KNOW IS BEST FOR ALL OF OUR READERS AND HAVING THIS RESOURCE HAS JUST BEEN A REALLY POWERFUL TOOL.

>> THIS REALLY EXTENDS THE IMPACT THAT WE HAVE ACROSS THE

DISTRICT. >> THESE KIDS ARE BUILDING A

VIDEOGAME. >> REPORTER: THE FOUNDATION HAS GENEROUSLY PROVIDED MORE THAN $115,000 EMPOWERING STUDENTS UNIQUE AND RELEVANT EXPERIENCES.

>> THEY HAVE BEEN DEVELOPING CHARACTERS AND STORIES. YOU ARE A MEMBER OF SECOND GRADE AND YOU BUILD YOUR OWN VIDEO GAME. THAT IS LEARNING THAT IS UNMATCHED AND IT IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY.

>> SURE. I AM SARAH AND I AM A TEACHER DEVELOPMENT SPECIALIST AT SAND CREEK ELEMENTARY. SO, I WORKED WITH OUR TEACHER LIBRARIAN, KRISTIN MORGAN ON WRITING THIS GRANT. WE WERE SEEING A NEED FOR MORE RESPECTFUL TEXT FROM THIRD AND FOURTH GRADERS WHO WERE IN THE PRIMARY STAGES SO DECODING AND LEARNING TO READ. WE WANTED SOMETHING THAT DID NOT LOOK LIKE A BABY BOOK BUT LOOKS LIKE SOMETHING THEY WOULD BE INTERESTED IN READING AND COULD ELICIT MORE CONVERSATIONS ABOUT THOUGHT, STRUCTURE, CHARACTERS, AND MORE.

SOMETHING MUCH MORE THAN WHAT HAS BEEN AVAILABLE BEFORE. WE WROTE A GRANT FOR STUDENTS IN THIRD AND FOURTH GRADE AND EACH TEACHER GOT ABOUT $100 TO USE IN THEIR CLASSROOM. TEACHERS CAN USE THEM AND THEY ARE VERY SKILL SPECIFIC SO THEY CAN USE THEM IN SMALL GROUPS AND THEN KIDS HAVE ACCESS TO THEM

IN BOOK BINS AND LOOK AT THEM TOGETHER. IT IS SOMETHING THEY CAN GET INTO TOGETHER. WE ARE REALLY EXCITED TO HAVE THEM.

>> I AM JENNIFER HARTMAN AND I AM THE TEACHER -- LIBRARY TEACHER AT GUIST ELEMENTARY. IT IS EASY TO GET LEGOS, BLOCKS, AND CARDBOARD SO IT WAS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY. WE GOT TWO GRANTS FROM THE FOUNDATION AND WE REALLY APPRECIATE THAT.

ONE IS FOR THE THINGS THEY ARE SEEING -- PSALM BOXILS. THEY CAN TAKE THE BOARD AND TRANSFER THAT TO THEIR OWN GAME. ARE REALLY EXCITED TO TYPE THEIR WRITING TO S.T.E.M.

AND ANOTHER GRANT I GOT IS FOR WIND TURBINES FOR THIRD-GRADE AND THEY WILL TIED THAT TO THEIR INNOVATORS ELEMENTS THAT THEY ARE DOING LATER IN THE SPRING. THIRD-GRADERS WILL BE HOLDING MANY WIND TURBINES OF THEIR OWN AND THEN MEASURING THE ELECTRICAL OUTPUT. WE ARE REALLY APPRECIATIVE OF HAVING THESE KINDS OF OPPORTUNITIES.

KINDERGARTNERS HAVE MORE ACCESS TO THAT TEXT BUT WE REALLY WANTED SOMETHING FOR NEW LEARNERS WHO WERE EITHER CELEBRATING -- BECAUSE THEY ARE MLL STUDENTS THAT ARE LEARNING ENGLISH OR A B WE WANTED SOMETHING TO ENGAGE THEM AND ALLOW THEM TO GET INTO SOMETHING JUST LIKE THEIR PEERS DO. JUST KIND OF A NEED AND IT IS EXCITING RIGHT NOW, THE OPPORTUNITIES AND RESOURCES THAT ARE OUT THERE. WE ARE JUST EXCITED THAT WE HAD THIS OPPORTUNITY.

>> OUR THIRD-GRADERS DID WIND POWER A LITTLE BIT LAST YEAR SO I WAS TRYING TO FIGURE OUT A WAY TO DIY WIND TURBINES. WE DID RECEIVE SIX BIDS AND OF THOSE, TWO OF THEM REFERENCE THE ACCESS POINT MODEL THAT WE ITEMIZED IN THE RFP. I AM RECOMMENDING THIS EVENING THAT WE ACCEPT A BID FROM MOSS TELECOM. WE HAVE WORKED WITH THEM IN THE PAST AND HAVE A GOOD WORKING HISTORY WITH THEM. THEIR BID PRICE WAS JUST OVER $227,000. THAT IS ABOUT $23,000 LESS THAN BUDGETED. AND REMEMBER THIS IS THE RATE ELIGIBLE SO BY USING THAT BID PRICE WE WILL GET JUST A LITTLE OVER $91,000 REIMBURSED TO THE DISTRICT THIS SUMMER. I AM HAPPY TO ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS THAT YOU HAVE. BUT WE WOULD RECOMMEND ACCEPTANCE OF THE BID FROM MOSS TELECOM.

THEY ELECT TO DO PE DURING THE SUMMER RATHER THAN DURING THE YEAR. I KNOW REGISTRATION IS NOT YET OPEN FOR SUMMER PE. DO WE HAVE A NUMBER OF KIDS THAT WE KNOW ARE THINKING ABOUT TAKING IT ? SO IF ALL OF A SUDDEN WE HAVE A BUNCH OF KIDS THAT ARE LIKE, THE PARENTS ARE LIKE, I'M NOT GOING TO DO THE EXTRA MONEY, YOU CAN JUST TAKE IT DURING THE YEAR AND THEN YOU HAVE TO GO TAKE ANOTHER

ESSENTIALLY, THE DEBT SERVICE FUND WILL TEMPORARILY LOAN $1 MILLION TO THE REFERENDUM FUND AND IT WILL TEMPORARILY LOAN $4.85 MILLION TO THE OPERATIONS FUND. AND THEN $150,000 TO THE PENSION BOND FUND. WE MADE OUR LAST PENSION BOND PAYMENT. THAT LEVY WILL BE DONE. THE RAINY DAY FUND WOULD LOAN $10.5 MILLION TO THE OPERATIONS FUND. STEPHANIE DOES A CASH FLOW ANALYSIS TO PREPARE FOR THIS AND THIS IS THE FIRST YEAR WHERE IT IS GETTING SUPPLEMENTED FROM THE EDUCATION FUND SO WE WERE MORE CONSERVATIVE JUST BECAUSE IT IS A LITTLE UNFAMILIAR AND FOR US IS IS A NO-NO TO RUN NEGATIVE CASH BALANCES. HE WAS KIND OF THE LEAD TEACHER, IF YOU WILL, NOT JUST FOR THE ROBOTICS PROGRAM BUT COORDINATED WITH OTHER BUILDINGS IN OUR DISTRICT TO HOPEFULLY, IF THE GRANT WAS SUCCESSFUL, TO SECURE FUNDING.

WE FOUND OUT IN DECEMBER THAT WE RECEIVED A LITTLE OVER $52,000 SO, I AM GOING TO LET MR. FRONIUS TALK ABOUT THE PROCESS AND HOW THOSE FUNDS WILL BE USED.

I THINK IT ALSO ADDS A CRITICAL THINKING ASPECT. I WILL EXPLAIN SOME OF THAT TO YOU AND ALSO, I DO THE HIGH SCHOOL VERSION OF THIS. WE DO IT IN A LARGE -- THE HIGH SCHOOL IS DONE IN AN ARENA. WE PACK THE STANDS AND PEOPLE ARE YELLING AND SCREAMING AND IT IS A FUN AND ELECTRIC ENVIRONMENT. THE KIDS ENJOY IT AND IT REALLY IS A COOL THING. THAT IS WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO. NOW, THERE WAS A GRANT. WE KNEW ABOUT THE GRANT AND MY TEAM COMPETES IN SOMETHING CALLED FIRST. WE BUILD THE BIG ROBOTS AND WE KNEW THAT THIS GRANT WAS BEING PROPOSED AT THE STATE LEGISLATURE AND MY TEAM TOOK A BUNCH AT SCHOOL LAST JANUARY AND WE HELPED WITH LOBBYING EFFORTS AT THE STATE HOUSE TO TRY TO GET THIS GRANT THROUGH.

WE WERE AHEAD OF THIS WHOLE THING. IN JULY IS WHEN IT WAS SUPPOSED TO COME OUT AND THEN WE WAIT AND THEN WE WAY AND THEY KEEP CALLING THE GUYS AT FIRST. AND THEY SAY IT TAKES TIME THEN IN SEPTEMBER, THE GRANT DID COME OUT. THERE WERE A COUPLE OF THINGS THAT MADE IT DIFFICULT FOR US. ONE, IT WAS A DISTRICTWIDE GRANT. SO MY TEAM THAT WAS EXCITED THINKING WE COULD GET $6000, IT HAD TO COME THROUGH THE DISTRICT. SO WE CONTACTED THE OFFICE OVER HERE SAYING HOW DO WE DO THIS? WE HAVE A WHOLE BUNCH OF SCHOOLS AND WE COULD GET $50,000 FOR THE DISTRICT. WHERE DO WE GO WITH ALL OF THIS? AND WE ONLY HAVE THREE WEEKS TO GET IT DONE. THE OTHER THING THAT WAS DIFFICULT ON THAT GRANT WAS FOR ALL OF THE MONEY THAT YOU ASK FOR, YOU HAD TO HAVE RAISED ONE THIRD OF THAT FROM THE COMMUNITY BY THE TIME YOU TURN THE GRANT IN. SO, HOW DO THESE LITTLE SCHOOLS DO ANY OF THAT? LUCKILY FOR THEM AND FOR US, MY TEAM DOES THAT. MY TEAM TAKES ABOUT $35,000 PER YEAR AND WE HAD RAISED ENOUGH FOR THE WHOLE DISTRICT. IT WAS NOT WRITTEN THAT WAY BUT, WHEN THE DISTRICT PUSHED BACK IN OUR LAPSING WE HAD TO FIGURE IT OUT, I CONTACTED THE STATE WITH A VERY SPECIFIC QUESTION. ONLY THOSE SCHOOLS WERE ABLE TO BUT WE STILL GOT THE FULL NUMBER OF THE GRANT. I DIDN'T WANT TO LEAVE ANY MONEY ON THE TABLE. IF THE STATE IS OFFERING $50,000, WE WANT THAT. BETWEEN THOSE WE ALL WORKED TOGETHER AND I STARTED WRITING STUFF AND SENT IT TO THEM AND THEY WOULD SEND IT TO EVERYBODY AS THEY WOULD WRITE STUFF.
