2028 AGENDA PLAN . WHAT I REALLY WANT TO DO IS GIVE KUDOS TO SOME REALLY IMPORTANT PEOPLE . I HAVE A GRANDSON WHO GRADUATED FROM FISHERS HIGH SCHOOL LAST WEEK AND IT WAS THE FIRST CLASS TO GRADUATE IN THE NEW EVENT CENTER AND IT WAS PULLED OFF WITH SUCH A FANTASTIC , NO MISTAKE I COULD EVER SEE PROGRAM . THEY HAD 22 BUSES AND THEY PUT EVERY GRADUATE IN THAT BUS WHICH WAS ALMOST 900 KIDS AND THOSE BUSES AND BROUGHT THEM FROM THE HIGH SCHOOL TO THE EVENT CENTER AND THEY MARCHED OFF THE BUSES IN ORDER AND GOT INTO LINE FOR THEIR MARCH INTO THE AUDITORIUM WITHOUT A HITCH. AT I WAS SO IMPRESSED AND I ASKED MY GRANDSON WHO WAS IN CHARGE OF THIS AND GOT ORGANIZED. HE SAID MOSTLY OUR PRINCIPAL, MR. GOODWIN. AND I SAID , THAT WAS A BIG JOB. I'M SURE HE HAD HELPERS. ACCORDING TO THE KIDS, IT WAS HIM. SO AT THE OPEN HOUSE, I ASKED THEM ABOUT THIS AND HOW WOULD GO OFF AND THEY TOLD ME AND SAID THEY HAVE TO PRACTICE YET. I DON'T KNOW WHO HELPED MR. GOODWIN. >> GOOD EVENING BOARD . MY NAME IS AARON TO MARCUS. I'M HERE TO SPEAK ABOUT THE STUDENT HANDBOOK. ESPECIALLY THE PROPOSED REMOVAL OF THE IPAD OPT OUT POLICY. MY OLDEST SON IS SET TO BEGIN KINDERGARTEN AT SAND CREEK THIS AUGUST. FROM WHAT I UNDERSTAND, THE MOST I CAN REQUEST AS A PARENT IS THAT THE IPAD STAYS AT SCHOOL AND DOESN'T COME HOME WITH HIM THAT I HAVE NO SAY ON IF, WHEN OR HOW MUCH IT IS USED DURING THE DAY.
WHEN I ENROLLED DAVID BACK IN FEBRUARY, I USED THE CURRENT STUDENT HANDBOOK TO GAUGE WHETHER THE DISTRICT WOULD BE A GOOD FIT FOR OUR FAMILY. ON PAGE 19, THE OPT OUT POLICY WAS CLEARLY STATED. I MADE THE DECISION TO ENROLL HIM BASED ON THE UNDERSTANDING THAT THIS WAS AN ESTABLISHED PRACTICE. IT FEELS NOW LIKE A BAIT AND SWITCH TO FIND OUT THE POLICY WILL BE REMOVED. UNFORTUNATELY, WE ARE TOO FAR ALONG IN THE PROCESS TO FIND ALTERNATIVES TO PRIVATE SCHOOLS THAT MIGHT BETTER ALIGN WITH OUR FAMILY'S VALUES AROUND TECHNOLOGY USE HAVE WEIGHTLESS.
OUR FAMILY'S VISION FOR RAISING TECH LITERATE CHILDREN CENTERS AROUND PUZZLES, BUILDING, EXPLORATION, COLLABORATING AND PROBLEM-SOLVING. NOT APP USAGE. TO BE CLEAR, MY HUSBAND AND I ARE NOT ANTITECHNOLOGY. IN FACT, MY HUSBAND WORKS IN DATA ANALYTICS AND SPENDS MUCH OF HIS TIME CODING. BUT WHEN I TOLD HIM THE DISTRICT USES IPADS AS THE PRIMARY STUDENT DEVICE, HIS IMMEDIATE REACTION WAS THAT IT IS ONE OF THE WORST PLATFORMS FOR SPARKING A CHILD'S INTEREST IN S.T.E.M. THE APPLE ECOSYSTEM IS HIGHLY RESTRICTIVE. BECAUSE OF ITS HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE SYSTEMS, STUDENTS CAN'T EXPLORE HOW THE TECHNOLOGY ACTUALLY WORKS. THEY CAN ONLY CONSUME CONTENT THROUGH THE APPS AND INTERACT WITH IT THAT WAY. IN CONTRAST, MOST TECH PROFESSIONALS KNOW THAT CULTIVATING FUTURE INNOVATORS MEANS MINIMIZING SCREEN TIME AND NOT ENCOURAGING IT.
INTERESTINGLY, MANY LEADERS IN THE TECH INDUSTRY, PEOPLE AT THE FOREFRONT OF INNOVATION, ARE SENDING THEIR CHILDREN TO MONTESSORI AND WALDORF SCHOOLS WHERE DEVICES ARE INTENTIONALLY MINIMIZED. I'M NOT ASKING FOR DRASTIC CHANGES . I'MSIMPLY ASKING FOR SOMETHING I THOUGHT WAS ALREADY IN PLACE WHEN I ENROLLED MY CHILD , THE ABILITY TO OPT OUT OF DAILY IPAD USAGE.
I KNOW SOME OF YOU UNDERSTAND THAT THERE IS A GROWING NATIONAL MOVEMENT TO PUSH BACK ON SCREEN-BASED CHILDHOODS . AND THE NEXT TO YEARS. I BELIEVE WE WILL SEE THIS GAIN MORE MOMENTUM

AND MORE ORGANIZATION. IN MY IDEAL WORLD, REKEY CAP THEIR SIX GOOD LEVEL WOULD HAVE AT LEAST ONE CLASSROOM WITHOUT DAILY SCREENS BEYOND MANDATED TESTING. THAT WAY, STUDENTS AT OPT OUT ARE NOT MADE TO FEEL LIKE OUTLIERS. INSTEAD, THE TEACHERS ARE NOT BURDENED WITH EXTRA WORK . AND ASKING THE BOARD TO INTERCEDE. IT IS CLEAR FROM WESTRICK'S POLICY COMMITTEE MEETING THAT THERE IS NO INTEREST IN RECONSIDERING THE OPT OUT OPTION THERE. I URGE CHAIR TO SCHOOL TO GET AHEAD OF THIS GROWING MOVEMENT AND REVISE BOTH THE TECHNOLOGY POLICY IN THE HANDBOOK TO PRESERVE AND IPAD OPT OUT PATH FOR FAMILIES LIKE MINE. AND IF WE WERE A LITTLE MORE INFORMED ABOUT TECH PHILOSOPHY, SCREEN TIME LIMITS AND PROTECTIONS THAT THE DISTRICT HAS IN PLACE, NO REASONABLE PARENT WOULD EVER BE CONCERNED OR SPEAK OUT ON SOMETHING LIKE THIS. TO ME, IT'S NOT REALLY ABOUT THE QUANTITY OF SCREEN TIME. IF THE NUMBER OF 10% THAT HAS BEEN THROWN OUT THERE REALLY IS 10% OR LESS OF TIME SPENT ON A TABLET, I CAN GET AROUND THAT.
IT IS NOT REALLY ABOUT SAFETY FOR ME. I HAVE FULL CONFIDENCE THAT THE DISTRICT IS HOLDING ITSELF TO THE HIGHEST INDUSTRY STANDARDS FOR SAFETY . SECURITY AND OVERSIGHT. AND FOR ME, IT IS NOT ABOUT WINNING MY KIDS TO BE TECH NAĆVE EITHER. I AGREE THAT KIDS THAT LIVE IN THIS WORLD NEED TO KNOW HOW THIS WORLD'S TECHNOLOGY WORKS FOR THEIR FUTURE CAREERS. MANY OF THE EXAMPLES THAT HAVE BEEN GIVEN IN THE MEETINGS ARE NOT WAYS THE LOWEST GRADE NEED TO BE USING TECH. WHEN MENTAL AND SOCIAL HEALTH IS AT THE CENTER OF THE CONVERSATION, I WONDER IF THE TRADE-OFF FOR THESE TOOLS IS REALLY WORTH IT. TO BECOME WHAT THIS CONVERSATION IS REALLY ABOUT IS UNNECESSARY INTEGRATION OF SCREENS INTO EVERY AREA OF LEARNING AND WHEN PARENTS RAISE HEALTH CONCERNS , THE GENERALIZED RESPONSE THAT KIDS SIMPLY CANNOT BE SCHOOLED WITHOUT THEM.
