TRYING TO GET IN AND CONTACTING YOU, THAT'S WHAT'S HAPPENING.
[00:00:03]
SO, THAT'S THE UPDATE. LET'S GO AHEAD AND CALL THIS MEETING TO ORDER. PLEASE STAND FOR THE PLEDGE OFALLEGIANCE. >> I PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE TO THE FLAG OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, AND TO THE REPUBLIC FOR WHICH IT STANDS, ONE NATION UNDER GOD, INDIVISIBLE, WITH
LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL. >> SO, GOOD EVENING EVERYONE.
[2. Snapshots of Success]
WE ARE GOING TO START OFF WITH OUR SNAPSHOTS OF SUCCESS, THE FISHERS ROBOTICS TEAM TIGER DYNASTY.AND MS. ABBOTS IS GOING TO TALK TO US ABOUT IT.
-- >> YES, WE HAVE OUR STATE CHAMPIONS, TIGER DYNASTY ROBOTICS TEAM HERE TONIGHT.
THEY EVEN WENT TO INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE AND WE WILL BE TALKING A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THAT.
WE HAVE A QUICK VIDEO THEY HAVE PRODUCED ABOUT THEIR ROBOT, AND THE COMPETITION, AND SOME STUDENTS ARE GOING TO COME UP AND ANSWER A FEW QUESTIONS AND TELL YOU A BIT ABOUT THIS AWESOME A SHEEN THEY BUILT.
>> -- WHILE STUDENTS -- SKILLS -- ROBOTS -- SOFT SKILLS. -- CAN WE READY PROFESSIONALISM THEY NEED.
DURING YOUR SEASON, WE GET SIX WEEKS TO BUILD A NEW ROBOT FROM SCRATCH, AND THEN COMPETE AGAINST OTHER SCHOOL TEAMS. THIS YEAR, ALL OF OUR TIGER -- THROUGH COMPETITIONS -- THEN -- IN THE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP, WHICH GAVE US THE OPPORTUNITY TO COMPETE AT THE FIRST WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS. THE COMPETITIONS -- PLAY AGAINST OTHER SCHOOLS, BUT ALSO LEARN HOW TO WORK, MAINTAIN AND COMPETE WITH THEIR ROBOT.
>> IT'S REALLY COOL. BECAUSE IT WAS MORE OF LIKE A REAL LIFE ENVIRONMENT. IT WASN'T THEORETICAL.
IT WAS VERY PRACTICAL. AND SO, WE CHOSE A LOT OF
CHALLENGES THAT YOU ONLY -- FIT >> WE DO DRIVE A PRACTICE.
WE PRACTICE DRIVING THE ROBOT FOR.
I HELPED COMMUNICATE TO THE OTHER TEAMS -- LIVE WHY SOMETHING MAY NOT BE WORKING, OR THE DEVICES THEY NEED TO WORK. --
>> -- ENERGIZE TOGETHER AND HOW DID THEY ACTUALLY MOVE FORWARD TO CREATE A WELL-ROUNDED
APPLIANCE. >> ROBOTS GIVE OPPORTUNITIES TO STUDENTS, HELPING THEM STRIVE FOR LEADERSHIP AND CREATIVITY -- THIS IS WHY, IN OUR WORKSHOP, STUDENTS DON'T -- ROBOTS -- STUDENTS.
>> GOOD EVENING. MEMBERS OF THE BOARD, WE ARE HERE TO TALK TO YOU A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT OUR TEAM, AND ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS YOU MIGHT HAVE.
SO MY, NAME IS JACK, AND I'M A SENIOR ON THE TEAM.
BUILDING TEAM. >> HELLO, MY NAME IS AUSTIN.
I HOPE WITH RUNNING THE PROGRAMMING TEAM AND -- MAKING SURE WE COMMUNICATE WITH OTHER TEAMS, AND ALSO A STRATEGY AND OTHER THINGS LIKE THAT.
>> I, MY NAME IS AVA FERGUSON. I'M CURRENTLY A JUNIOR.
I AM THE KATKO LEAGUE. -- I WORKED A LOT WITH THE SCOUTING, WHICH A LOT -- UNDERSTAND HOW THEY WORK. TO REALLY BUILD THE STRATEGY IN -- COMPETITIONS.
>> SO, WHAT QUESTIONS DO YOU ALL HAVE FOR US?
>> SO, ARE YOU GOING TO DO A DEMONSTRATION?
>> [LAUGHTER] >> I COULD JUST SEE YOU ALL PRACTICE. -- BEFORE YOUR FIRST COMPETITION. SO, IT SEEMS IMPRESSIVE.
>> CAN YOU SHARE A LITTLE BIT MORE? I HEARD IN THE VIDEO, IT'S SOMETHING THAT STARTED -- WAS IT SCRATCH TO SIX MONTHS? LIKE, TO GET TO THIS -- IT ONLY TOOK SIX MONTHS TO GET TO THIS?
IS THAT WHAT I HEARD? >> YEAH.
-- SIX WEEKS -- SO, A COUPLE MONTHS, AND THAT'S THE TIMELINE WE HAVE.
THERE ARE SOME MECHANISMS YOU CAN BUY THEIR PREMADE.
BUT THE MAJORITY OF EVERYTHING ON THE ROBOT WAS DESIGNED AND BUILT AND MADE FROM SCRATCH IN THE SIX-WEEK PERIOD, PRETTY
MUCH. >> SO, DID YOU SAY SIX-WEEK? SO, NOT SIX MONTHS -- SIX WEEKS?
>> -- JANUARY -- OUR FIRST COMPETITION WAS ACTUALLY MARCH.
SO, ABOUT TWO MONTHS OR SO. >> HOW MUCH DOES THAT THING
[00:05:04]
>> -- >> IT'S OKAY IF YOU DON'T KNOW.
I'M JUST CURIOUS. >> [LAUGHTER]
>> -- THAT'S THE SHORT ANSWER.
THERE'S A LOT OF EXPENSIVE PARTS ON IT.
-- ELECTRONICS -- THERE ARE A LOT OF EXPENSIVE ELECTRONICS ON IT.
FOR EXAMPLE, WE HAVE A -- IT'S CALLED VERBAL RIO -- AND FOR THE MOTORS, AND THE MOTOR CONTROLLER, EACH CONTROLLER WE HAVE ON THE SYSTEM IS AROUND $100.
YOU PUT ALL THAT TOGETHER AND ALSO THE -- COSTS FOR CUTTING OUT ALL OF THE METAL AND PUTTING IT
TOGETHER, IT'S PRETTY -- >> SO, DO YOU GET SOME SUPPORT FROM THE COMMUNITY? FROM LOCAL BUSINESSES? HOW DO YOU FUND ALL THIS? INCLUDING -- I KNOW THAT THERE WAS THE COMPETITION FEE.
>> -- >> -- THOUSAND DOLLARS. CAN YOU TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT
THAT? >> -- IT TAKES A LOT THAT GOES INTO IT.
AND THEN WE HAVE ADMISSION FEES, ESPECIALLY FOR EVERY SINGLE COMPETITION THAT WE GO TO. AND THE COMMUNITY HAS REALLY SUPPORTED US, ESPECIALLY WITH THE RECENT WORLD'S COMPETITION THAT WE WENT TO IN HOUSTON, TEXAS.
THIS IS MORE MOORE -- AND IT REALLY HELPED US -- PARENTS AS WELL FOR THE NEXT SEASON.
>> THAT'S FANTASTIC. THANK YOU.
DO YOU FEEL LIKE -- SORRY, I'M STEALING THE SHOW HERE. DO YOU FEEL LIKE SOME OF THOSE RELATIONSHIPS THAT YOU MAKE AS YU GO AND GET PARTS AND DONATIONS AND THINGS, WITH LOCAL BUSINESSES, OR OTHER LABS OR PLACES LIKE THAT -- WITH THAT HELP YOU? DO YOU ALL HAVE INTENTION OF GOING INTO THIS FIELD? IN ENGINEERING AND THAT KIND OF THING?
>> I CAN SAY PERSONALLY I DEFINITELY THINK THESE RELATIONSHIPS WILL HELP. BECAUSE, I'M NEXT YEAR GOING ON TO START A FOUR YEAR DEGREE IN MECHANICAL ENGINEERING.
SO, DEFINITELY WHAT I'VE DONE WITH THE TEAM HAS LED ME IN THE DIRECTION THAT I WANT TO GO IN MY CAREER.
>> THAT'S PERFECT. WHICH SCHOOL ARE YOU GOING TO,
IFI CAN ASK? >> I'M GOING TO THE UNIVERSITY
>> I ALSO GOT TO COME ON A SATURDAY.
I THINK IT WAS AFTER YOUR FIRST COMPETITION.
YOU GUYS WERE MAKING SOME ADJUSTMENTS TO THE ROBOT.
CAN YOU TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT SOME OF THE NEW TOOLS AND MACHINERY, MAYBE, THAT YOU HAVE GOTTEN? I KNOW THAT WHEN I WAS THERE, YOU ARE CUTTING A NEW METAL PORT FOR THE ROBOT. BECAUSE IT USED TO BE PLASTIC, I THINK. AND MAYBE IT BROKE.
AND SO NOW YOU ARE TRYING TO DO MENTAL.
CAN YOU TALK ABOUT HOW THAT NEW PIECE OF EQUIPMENT HAS HELPED
I WILL TALK ABOUT THIS JUST BECAUSE I OPERATED THIS NEW MACHINE A LOT THIS YEAR. WE GOT TO SEE AND SEE C&C ROUTER -- GOOD WAY TO EXPLAIN IT.
AND THAT'S BEEN A HUGE HELP FOR US BECAUSE IT ALLOWED FOR US TO DO MORE MACHINING -- WE ALSO HAVE A -- AND THEY HELP US OUT, LENDING US MACHINERY.
BUT IT'S BEEN NICE TO DO A LOT OF THAT -- IN OUR SHOP. -- HELP MAKE THE PROCESS AND DESIGNED TO MAKE THE --
COMPONENT A LOT FASTER. >> SO, WE WERE VERY FORTUNATE.
AND I DON'T KNOW WHO IT WAS THAT SENT US THOSE FABULOUS VIDEOS THAT SHOWS THE COMPETITION.
AND MAN, IT GOES SO QUICKLY. -- PUT IT IN. CAN YOU EXPLAIN A LITTLE BIT ABOUT WHAT THAT COMPETITION WAS? I SAW THE SCORE IS GOING UP AND DOWN. BUT I WAS NOT UNDERSTANDING HOW YOU ARE GETTING THOSE POINTS. SO, WAS IT JUST PICKING UP AND GETTING OVER THE HUMP? OR WAS IT ACTUALLY PUTTING IT INTO THE BASKET? HOW DID YOU GUYS EARN THE
POINTS? >> SO, THERE'S ACTUALLY A COUPLE OF WAYS TO SCORE POINTS IN THE GAME.
IN THE FIRST SECTION, IT'S AN AUTONOMOUS PERIOD, WHERE THE ROBOT HAS TO BE CONTROLLED BY CODE.
IN THAT, IT IS ABLE TO SCORE PIECES ONTO THE GRID, AND -- BALANCE. AND THEN WHEN YOU ARE GOING TO THE MAIN GAME, HOW IT WORKS FOR OUR DRIVERS, IS THAT WHAT THEY WOULD DO IS THAT THEY USE THE ROBOT RIGHT THERE TO GRAB THE CONES AND -- THEIR, AND YOU WOULD SEE ON EACH SIDE, ON YOUR SIDE OF THE FIELD, THEY WOULD BE THE STAKES. AND THEN THERE ARE LITTLE NODES THERE, AND THE SPHERES. AND YOU PUT CUBES IN THOSE SQUARES, AND YOU PUT THE CONES ON THE STICKS THERE AND, THAT'S HOW YOU GET POINTS. AND THEN YOU MAKE THEM UP AND GET POINTS. YOU GET MORE POINTS TOO.
IT'S A LOT OF RUNNING BACK AND FORTH.
BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO PICK UP PIECES FROM THE OTHER SIDE OF THE FIELD. SO, YOU HAVE TO RUN IT FROM THERE, AND YOU HAVE TO GO BACK. IT'S PRETTY INTERESTING.
THE OTHER TEAM ALSO HAS TO GO ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE FIELD.
SO, WHEN THE CROSS, THERE'S A LOT OF THINGS THAT HAPPENED
THERE TOO. >> THANK YOU FOR EXPLAINING
THAT. >> SO, IT'S MY UNDERSTANDING THAT FISHERS HAS FIRST ROBOTICS. HSE HAS --
[00:10:01]
ROBOTICS. CORRECT? HAS THERE BEEN ANY DISCUSSION ABOUT BRINGING BOTH TEAMS UNDER THE SAME UMBRELLA? I KNOW THERE IS BUS, THERE'S VEX, AND THERE'S FIRST ROBOTICS.AND OTHERS DISTINCTIONS BETWEEN ALL OF THEM.
-- THAT'S OKAY IF YOU DON'T KNOW
>> FANTASTIC. THEN, YOU CAN --
>> I TAKE THE COURSE OVER THERE THAT THAT TEAM IS A PART OF.
-- THE BIG -- SO THE COMPETITIONS ARE VERY DIFFERENT AND I DON'T PERCEIVE THEM COMING TOGETHER. THE OTHER THING IS THAT, AT AGENCY, THAT COMPETITION IS PART OF A CLASS.
-- THIS IS DIFFERENT IN THAT ANYONE AT THE SCHOOL CAN COME IN AND PARTICIPATE IN THIS.
SO, THE BEST COMPETITION IS ON A BIT OF A SMALLER SCALE.
BECAUSE IT IS JUST KIND OF WITHIN THAT CLASS.
AND SO, WITH FIRST, IT'S A MUCH BIGGER THING AND A MUCH BIGGER TIME COMMITMENT THEN JUST WHEN PERIOD A DAY.
AND SO THAT'S WHY IT IS KIND OF SEPARATE.
>> ONE LAST QUESTION. AND YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO ANSWER THIS MAY BE. YOUR TEACHER MIGHT.
SO, WITH THE RECENT LEGISLATION THAT WAS PASSED AT THE STATE, REGARDING ROBOTICS COMPETITIONS, ROBOTICS TEAMS -- HOW DOES THAT BENEFIT US IN SOME WAY? I AM HOPING, FROM A GROWTH PERSPECTIVE --
>> BASED ON OUR UNDERSTANDING -- SHOULD HAVE SOME -- THE STATE --
THAT'S GOOD TO HEAR. >> I HAVE ONE LAST QUESTION.
AS -- YOU ARE A SENIOR, SO, YOU ARE GOING TO BE LEAVING US. WE HAVE A TITLE TO DEFEND NOW.
DO WE HAVE ANYTHING IN PLACE FOR THE FUTURE? THE NEXT CROP COMING UP? WE HAVE GOOD ENTHUSIASM? IS THE CLUB GROWING? AND YOU FEEL LIKE IT'S IN A
GOOD PLACE GOING FORWARD? >> -- IT OF -- SORRY, I DIDN'T CATCH THAT.
>> OH, I DON'T LIKE THIS, GUYS. --
TALK YOU INTO ONE MORE YEAR. >> --
THE NON SENIORS. >> SO, WHO IS GOING TO STEP UP AND LEAD THIS THING INTO THE NEXT -- THERE WE GO. I LIKE IT.
>> -- WHEN YOU ARE LEAVING -- GOOD HANDS -- TO GREAT -- AND IT'S JUST THAT IT'S REALLY JUST THE TRAINING REALLY.
SO, IT'S REALLY NOT -- THE BEST --
>> AND THEN, OBVIOUSLY, A LOT OF THE -- INCLUDING MYSELF, AND EVEN SOPHOMORES, THAT ARE CURRENTLY IN LEADERSHIP -- AUSTIN IS THE DRAG COACH ON OUR TEAM, WHICH IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT ROLES.
-- AND THEN THE CAD LEAD -- SUMMER AND OUR OFF-SEASON TO REALLY SOLIDIFY THOSE ROLES, FOR PEOPLE, JUST TO MAKE SURE THAT THE NEXT COMPETITION --
>> FANTASTIC. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
>> SO, ONE LAST THING. IS A COMPETITION FOR BEST ROBOTICS TEAM IN THE STATE, RIGHT?
THAT'S CURRENTLY HAPPENING? >> --
>> WHAT HAPPENED? >> I SAW THAT.
I CLICKED ON IT. AND I WAS LIKE, WHAT? WHERE IS THE TEAM I WANTED TO VOTE FOR?
>> THAT'S OKAY. WE KNOW YOU ARE THE BEST
I DID HAVE ONE QUESTION. WHEN MY DAUGHTER WAS IN ROBOTICS, SHE WAS IN AN INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL AND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. BUT SHE LEARNED THINGS THAT I DID NOT EXPECT HER TO LEARN THAT ONE RELATED, NECESSARILY, TO STEM, THERE WERE MORE RELATED TO INTEGRITY OR WORK ETHIC. CAN YOU TELL ME SOME THINGS YOU MIGHT HAVE LEARNED FROM THIS EXPERIENCE THAT YOU DID NOT
EXPECT TO? >> ONE MAIN THING I LEARNED WAS A NEW SENSE OF TEAMWORK. BEFORE JOINING THE ROBOTICS TEAM I DID A LOT OF SPORTS. AND ON A SPORTS TEAM, YOU HAVE TEAMWORK. BUT A LOT OF IT, DEPENDING ON THE SPORT, IS INDIVIDUAL, WHETHER YOU ARE MOVING UP TO VARSITY, FROM JUNE OF OUR CITY. ON THE SCENE, EVERYONE IS COLLABORATING TOGETHER AS A WHOLE TO MAKE THE TEAM SUCCEED.
-- SO, IT'S DEFINITELY GIVING ME A NEW SENSE OF TEAMWORK, WORKING WITH ONLY NOT ONLY IN MY SUBGROUP BUT IN THE ENTIRE TEAM.
RATHER THAN JUST THIS INDIVIDUAL SENSE OF, OH, I NEED TO MOVE UP IN A STRONG TEAM. IT'S EVERYBODY WORKING TOWARDS THE SAME GOAL. AND IT'S BEEN A REALLY GREAT
>> THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH FOR BEING HERE TONIGHT.
CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR WIN. >> [APPLAUSE]
[00:16:05]
>> OKAY. READY? ON THE COUNT OF THREE. ONE, TWO, THREE.
[3. Public Comment]
>> SO, MOVING ON TO PUBLIC COMMENT SECTION, SECTION 3.01 ON THE AGENDA -- THIS ALLOWS FOR MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY WHO HAVE SIGNED UP TO SPEED ON THOSE ITEMS THAT ARE ON OUR AGENDA FOR THIS EVENING. JUST A COUPLE KEY THINGS TO KNOW. THE PURPOSE OF THE PUBLIC COMMENT IS TO GIVE BOARD MEMBERS AS MUCH INFORMATION AS POSSIBLE, AND NOT NECESSARILY TO ENGAGE IN DEBATE.
THE BOARD SHALL ALERT EACH PERSON PROVIDING PUBLIC COMMENT A MINIMUM OF THREE MINUTES -- A PERSON MAY SPEAK MORE THAN ONCE ON THE SAME TOPIC. THE BOARD WILL NOT TOLERATE INAPPROPRIATE LANGUAGE OR STATEMENTS.
THE COMMENTS SHOULD BE DIRECTED TO THE BOARD AND NOT ANY INDIVIDUAL BOARD MEMBER. SO, WITH THAT, WE HAVE THREE INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE SIGNED UP FOR THIS EVENING.
AND WE ARE GOING TO START WITH MIKE JAMESON, TALKING ON 5.02,
RESORTED OPTIONS. >> HELLO, GOOD EVENING, MY NAME IS MIKE JAMESON. YEAH, TALKING ON 5.02, RESOURCE ADOPTION. FIRST I JUST WANT TO TALK ABOUT TRANSPARENCY AND I JUST WANT TO MAKE A REQUEST THAT -- SO, ON MONDAY EVENING, THE AGENDA READ, MICHELLE BURTON-WATTS WILL PRESENT HIGH SCHOOL MATH RECOMMENDATIONS FOR ADOPTION. BUT THERE WERE NO ATTACHMENT.
SO WE, COULD NOT FULLY UNDERSTAND WHAT THAT MEANT.
SO, THEN A, WAS NOT ABLE TO GET ON UNTIL A COUPLE HOURS BEFORE THIS MEETING. SO, SOME TIME BETWEEN MONDAY AND THEN, THE RESOURCES WERE POSTED.
AND I NOTICED THERE WAS A RESOURCE FOR ENGLISH LITERATURE. SO, IT WAS JUST A LITTLE FRUSTRATING THAT THAT'S HAPPENING.
AND I KNOW THAT THE ADMINISTRATION -- FOR THOSE ON THE VIDEO, THE PEOPLE BEHIND ME ARE THE PEOPLE WHO ARE -- THAT'S WHERE THE AGENDA ORIGINATES. AND I JUST WANT TO -- I WOULD LIKE TO SEE SOME MORE PUSHBACK ON THAT.
IF THAT IS NOT GETTING POSTED, MAYBE JUST SAY, HEY, WE CAN'T TALK ON THIS UNTIL WE HAVE GOT THESE RESOURCES POSTED IN TIME FOR US AND FOR THE PUBLIC TO MAKE SOME COMMENT ON IT, AND HAVE SOME UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT IS ON THERE.
SO, WITH THAT SAID, THAT WAS THE MAIN POINT.
BUT ALSO, SORRY -- LIKE I SAID, I HAVE ONLY HAD ABOUT AN HOUR TO READ THROUGH IT.
SO, I JUST HAVE A LITTLE PARAGRAPH.
BUT I WANT TO EMPHASIZE ACADEMICS, ACADEMIC AND SILENCE EXCELLENCE, AND JUST WE ARE, ON THE FIRST ONE, FOR BIG IDEAS, IT SAYS -- IT USED THE LANGUAGE, REAL WORLD EXPLORATIONS. I JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT
[00:20:02]
THESE, ESPECIALLY THE MATH RESOURCES, HAVE MATHEMATIC RIGOR, AND ACADEMIC RIGOR, THAT WE ARE NOT GETTING AWAY FROM THAT. BECAUSE THAT IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR LEARNING MATH,'S REPUTATION, REPETITION, REPETITION.AND IT'S SOMETHING I KNOW. I AM AN ENGINEER.
SO, IT'S JUST SOMETHING THAT I WAS INTERESTED IN.
BUT YOU HAVE GOT TO HAVE THAT REPETITION.
I JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT THAT IS INCLUDED IN THESE -- AND FOR THOSE ON TWITTER, MY NAME IS MIKE JAMESON, IT'S SPILLED SPELLED JAMIESON. --
>> THANK YOU FOR ALLOWING ME TO SPEAK.
MY NAME IS KEVIN EFLIN. MY WIFE AND I MOVED TO FISHERS OVER 31 YEARS AGO, PRIMARILY BECAUSE OF THE REPUTATION OF HSE SCHOOLS. OUR SON AND DAUGHTER RECEIVED GRADE EDUCATIONS IN EVERY HSE THEY ATTENDED.
AND GIVEN THAT I COME FROM A FAMILY OF EDUCATORS AND GRADUATED WITH AN EDUCATION MINOR FROM PURDUE, I HAVE BEEN FORTUNATE TO HEAR AND UNDERSTAND WHAT GREAT EDUCATORS CAN DO FOR CHILDREN. AFTER MY RETIREMENT FROM A LARGE CORPORATION THAT I WORKED FOR FOR 30 YEARS, I HAD A DESIRE TO GIVE TO EDUCATION. SO I VOLUNTEERED AND SERVED ON THE HSE EDUCATION BOARD FROM 2008 TO 2015.
I EXPERIENCED FIRSTHAND WHY HSE IT'S ONE OF THE BEST OF THE BEST SCHOOL CORPORATIONS. FROM MY PROFESSIONAL -- INCLUDING SENIOR LEADERSHIP POSITIONS, I UNDERSTAND THE IMPORTANCE OF HIRING TALENT THAT IS THE BEST OF THE BEST TO ADVANCE AND ORGANIZATION. WITH THIS BACKGROUND, I WANT TO ENSURE THAT ALL OUR WE WERE AWARE THAT MY COMMENTS TONIGHT, I WAS A FISHERS LONG -- RESIDENT ARE INTENDED TO BE PRODUCTIVE AND ADVANCING THE GREATNESS OF OUR SCHOOLS.
PLEASE TAKE MY COMMENTS WITH THE FOLLOWING MOTTO.
THE BIGGEST ROOM IN LIFE IS ALWAYS THE ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT. WHEN IN A RUSH TO FILL POSITIONS, THERE CAN BE PITFALLS IF THEY ARE NOT UNDERSTOOD AND ADDRESSED APPROPRIATELY.
HIRING STANDARDS ARE SOMETIMES LOWERED TO QUICKLY FILL THOSE POSITIONS.
THIS CAN HAPPEN VERY QUICKLY AND SUBTLY.
I OBSERVED AN EXPERIENCED THIS WHEN I WAS INVOLVED WHEN HIRING MANY NEW EMPLOYEES WHEN WE WENT THROUGH GROWTH SPURTS.
AND IT WAS A CHALLENGE TO MAINTAIN AN UNEXPECTED HIGH LEVEL OF STANDARDS WHEN WE HAD A NUMBER OF OPEN POSITIONS TO FILL. AND OUR TEAMS OF INTERNAL INTERVIEWERS HELD EACH OTHER ACCOUNTABLE TO ENSURE THOSE STANDARDS WERE BEING MET. SO, HSE MUST ALWAYS ADHERE TO THEIR STANDARDS, HIRE THE BEST OF THE BEST IN ALL AREAS, AND THEN WORKED DILIGENTLY TO KEEP THEM.
AND I HAVE TWO RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE ADVANCED HIRING AUTHORITY POLICY. NUMBER ONE, ENSURE THE EFFICIENCY AND EFFECTIVENESS OF INTERVIEW PRACTICES, PROCESSES AND STANDARDS ARE ALWAYS ADHERED TO FOR ALL POSITIONS.
AND FOR ADMINISTRATOR POSITIONS, I BELIEVE A VERY GOOD ADMINISTRATOR WILL WAIT FOR AN OFFER TO BE APPROVED AND -- FROM A HIGH PERFORMING SCHOOL DISTRICT.
IN ADDITION, IN ANY LARGE ORGANIZATION, THERE IS ALWAYS THE TENDENCY TO HAVE LEADERSHIP GROWTH.
AND I WANT TO ENSURE THE CHALLENGE THAT WE ARE RIGHT SIZING OUR ADMINISTRATOR LEVEL WITHIN THE SCHOOL DISTRICT.
SO, THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME AND ALLOWING ME TO SPEAK AND
COMMENT TONIGHT. >> [APPLAUSE]
>> NEXT UP IS DONALD CAMPBELL, REGARDING 6.02, --
YOU MENTIONED, MY NAME IS DONALD CAMPBELL, AND I WANT TO CONGRATULATE YOU ON ALL YOUR RECENT POSITIONS AND APPOINTMENTS. -- BEST IN CLASS TRANSPORTATION, EDUCATION AND WELL-BEING.
FOR THE PAST 17 YEARS, I'VE PROVIDED TECHNICAL SERVICES AND SURVEILLANCE PRODUCTS TO THE EXCEPTIONAL PROFESSIONALS AT YOUR TRANSPORTATION DEPARTMENT. IN THE SUMMER AND WINTER, RAIN, SNOW, LATE NIGHTS, WEEKENDS, WHATEVER NEEDED TO BE DONE -- I HOPE MY COMMENTS TONIGHT DID NOT DISRUPT THIS RELATIONSHIP.
-- ON THE AGENDA THIS EVENING.
ONE OF MY COMPANIES ENGAGED IN A MARCH PRE-BID MEETING IN THIS ROOM. WE SUBMITTED TWO PROPOSALS IN RESPONSE TO THE POSTED RFP AND ADDENDUM, BOTH OF WHICH MET THE GENERAL TACTICAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE RFP, THE SAME DESIGN WE HAVE AND OUR IMPLEMENTING ACROSS DISTRICTS ACROSS CENTRAL INDIANA IN RECENT YEARS. IN FACT ARE, FIRST PROPOSAL INCLUDES FREEZING THE EXISTING DIGITAL BUS RADIOS FOR A PROJECT COST SAVINGS EXCEEDING $300,000.
AFTER A FEW EMAIL EXCHANGES WITH COMMITTEE MEMBERS, WE WERE INFORMED VIA EMAIL, QUOTE, UPON REVIEW OF YOUR RESPONSE, AND
[00:25:02]
THE RFP RUBRIC, YOUR PROPOSAL DOES NOT NEED MEET THE GUIDELINES SPECIFIED IN THE RFP, END QUOTE.WE MAILED COMMITTEE MEMBERS TWICE OVER THE PAST THREE WEEKS, SEEKING CLARITY ON THE DEFICIENCIES, AND SCORING PROCESS OF OUR PROPOSAL AGAINST THE POSTED RFP, WITHOUT REPLY TO DATE. THE RFP WAS CRAFTED IN FAVOR OF A BRAND, NOT A DESIGN, AND IN FACT LISTED SPECIFIC MODEL NUMBERS. OUR BIDS WERE DESIGNED EASING OPEN PROTOCOLS AND EQUIPMENT AVAILABLE FROM MULTIPLE BRANDS THAT EXCEED FEW PUBLISHED SPECIFICATIONS AND INCLUDED ENGINEERING DETAILS TO SUPPORT. WE ALSO REQUEST THAT, SINCE THE BAG DID NOT CLEARLY DETAIL THE SYSTEM ENVISIONED, THAT IT BE PULLED AND REISSUED WITH THE INTENDED SPECIFICS OF THE PROJECT, SO WE MAY PROVIDE A COMPETITIVE AND LEGAL RESPONSE.
THE BOARD IS THE ELECTED STEWARDS OF THE PUBLIC EDUCATION FUNDS. SO, I MUST FORMALLY PROTEST TO YOU THE REJECTION OF OUR RESPONSES BASED UPON THE LACK OF INTENDED STYLE AND PURPOSE OF THE RFP.
IF A RFP LACKED CLARITY FOR A NEW SUICIDE, OR WOULD YOU APPROVE AN AUDITORIUM INSTEAD? IF THE RFP HEAD DETAILED A MULTI-SITE TRUNK RADIO SYSTEM, WE WOULD HAVE BID ONE USING COMPETITIVE OPEN MARKET PRODUCTS.
IT DID NOT. I HAVE SEVERAL CUSTOMERS ACROSS SIX STATES IMPLEMENT THE SAME BRAND TRANSITION OVER THE RECENT YEARS WITH COMMON REPORTS OF THE RESULTING TECHNICAL, SUPPORT AND COST CHALLENGES.
LET'S WORK TOGETHER TO PREVENT THE SAME HERE.
[4. Consent Agenda]
>> MOVING ON TO SECTION FOUR, CONSENT AGENDA.
THERE ARE THREE ITEMS PRESENTED ON THE CONSENT AGENDA.
4.01, BOARD MINUTES. AND -- CLAIMS, PAYROLL -- A SALARY REDUCTION AGREEMENTS.
DO I HAVE A MOTION TO APPROVE CONSENT AGENDA?
>> OTHERS IN FAVOR OF APPROVING THE CONSENT AGENDA, SAY AYE.
[5. Information Items]
SAY NAY. -- AND DR. KEGLEY AND -- SHAW.IN KEEPING -- >> -- ABLE TO FIX THE VIDEO FEED. SO, FOR ANYONE THAT IS JOINING
OKAY, NO PRESSURE. THIS IS YOSH SHAW AND I'M GOING TO INVITE HIM TO TAKE OVER THE PRESENTATION IN JUST A MINUTE.
-- I HAD AN OPPORTUNITY IN MARCH AS I WAS -- MY SCHOOL VISITS TO GO INTO A SECOND GRADE CLASSROOM AND -- AND IT WAS VERY EARLY IN THE SCHOOL DAY AND I SAW YOSH, WHY HAD NOT MET AT THAT MOMENT AND A COUPLE OF HIS CLASSMATES WHO WERE WORKING WITH SECOND GRADERS IN THE CLASSROOM TEACHING THEM HOW TO CODE.
AND SO I WAS REALLY INTERESTED IN KNOWING A LITTLE MORE ABOUT HOW THIS HAPPENED, AND HOW THE PARTNERSHIP CAME ABOUT.
AND SO I THOUGHT THIS WOULD BE A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE WITH THE BOARD AND THE COMMUNITY HOW THE RIGORS OF COURSE FOR CANNED OF TAIL, AS YOU ALLUDED TO, A LITTLE BIT, MS. PARKS-REESE, WITH COMMUNITY SERVICE AND OUTREACH AND TEACHING IN THIS CASE. SO, YOSH IS A MEMBER OF AND HAS TAKEN SEVERAL COMPUTER SCIENCE COURSES AT HSE HIGH SCHOOL.
AND HE IS IN WHAT IS CALLED COMPUTER SCIENCE HONORS SOCIETY. AND I DID NOT EVEN KNOW THAT THERE WAS EVEN SUCH A THING. TO BE IN THE HONORS SOCIETY YOU HAVE TO COMPLETE OR BE ENROLLED IN AT LEAST TWO NON-AP -- COMPUTER SCIENCE COURSE. AND THERE ARE SEVERAL OPPORTUNITIES TO CHOOSE FROM, WHICH INCLUDE HP AP PRINCIPLES
[00:30:09]
-- AND DEMONSTRATE SERVICE AND LEADERSHIP, BASED ON REFERENCES AND COMPLETION OF APPLICATIONS.SO, MS. JULIA LLAWNA IS HIS -- AND NOW I'M GOING TO TURN IT OVER TO YOSH AND LET HIM TELL YOU ABOUT HOW THIS IDEA CAME ABOUT. AND I WILL SHARE SOME EXPERIENCES FROM THE CLASSROOM.
GOOD EVENING, EVERYBODY. AS MENTIONED, MY NAME IS YOSH SHAW. I'M A JUNIOR AT -- CURRENT OUTREACH OFFICER FOR COMPUTER SCIENCE ON OUR SOCIETY AND BASICALLY I STARTED THIS UNIQUE PROGRAM WHICH STARTED IN DECEMBER OF 2021 AND IN THIS PROGRAM -- IN 2021 -- I WAS ABLE TO START A PROJECT AT HOME WHERE I POSTED FLYERS AROUND MY COMMUNITY FACEBOOK PAGE AND SISTER COMMUNITIES. AND WE WERE ABLE TO GET EIGHT KIDS, I THINK FROM K TO THIRD GRADE I, THINK -- WITH TWO HOURS PER DAY, WITH TWO DIFFERENT SESSIONS A DAY, AND I HAD A TOTAL OF EIGHT KIDS SHOW UP.
AND WE WALK THROUGH DIFFERENT INTRODUCTORY TO COATING, LIKE STATEMENTS OF -- IF ILL FL STATEMENTS -- BASIC STUFF LIKE THAT. AND THEN THE END OF THIS PROGRAM WE CREATED A -- OR EVEN MAKE MORE ENHANCE ON THEIR OWN. AND -- WE LEARNED OVER THE PAST THREE DAYS -- AND SO THESE ARE JUST SOME OF THE PICTURES THAT WERE TAKEN FOR THAT SESSION. THE SESSION WAS HELD IN MY BASEMENT. YEAH.
IT WAS KIND OF A WINTER BREAK THING.
AND I SENT OUT A SURVEY TO SEE IF THE PARENTS WOULD LIKE THIS TO BE DONE IN THE SCHOOL DISTRICT.
AND I GOT A VERY POSITIVE RESPONSE THAT THEY WOULD LIKE TO SEE THIS. SO, WITH THE HELP OF MS. CURRAN AT TCE -- SOME OF MY HONOR SOCIETY MEMBERS. -- THIS WAS EVERY TUESDAY MORNING IN THE MONTH OF MARCH FROM -- AND WE WOULD TEACH THEM BASIC LEVELS.
WE HAD USED ABOUT THE BASIC CURRICULUM THAT I USED AT MY HOUSE. BUT WE DIFFERENTIATED OUR APPROACH TO IT JUST BECAUSE OF THE LARGER NUMBER OF KIDS.
AND TO GET MORE STUFF IN. AND AT THE END OF THIS WE CREATED THIS APP CALLED DANCE PARTY -- AND THEN AFTER WE WOULD TEACH THEM, WE DID SOME SITE ASSIGNMENTS THEY WOULD HAVE TO COMPLETE, WHERE WE WOULD HELP THEM. SO, THAT'S HOW IT REALLY IS THEM GOING. AND MY GOAL FOR THE FUTURE IS THAT WE ADD ABOUT FIVE MORE SCHOOLS NEXT YEAR.
AND WE CAN CONTINUE THIS FOR YEARS TO COME.
>> FIRST OF ALL, OUTSTANDING, IS ALL I'M GOING TO SAY.
JUST OUTSTANDING THAT IT JUST SPARKED IN YOUR HEART AND DOING SOMETHING -- AND THEN HAVING THE WHEREWITHAL TO BRING INTO THE SCHOOL DISTRESS DISTRICT.
AND YOU ARE PILING TING PILOTING IT -- I WANT TO COMMEND YOU ON IT JUST THE PROGRAM THAT YOU ARE PUTTING TOGETHER, AND REACHING OUT TO SO MANY OTHER KIDS AND FAMILIES. SO, FANTASTIC.
>> A LOT OF MY COLLEAGUES KNOW THAT I WORK FOR THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION, THAT YOU PROBABLY DON'T KNOW THAT.
BUT I HAPPEN TO SIT RIGHT NEXT TO THE COMPUTER SCIENCE SPECIALIST. AND I CAN'T WAIT TO TRIM DOWN THIS VIDEO AND SHOW HER THE AMAZING WORK THAT YOU ARE DOING TOMORROW. SO, CONGRATULATIONS.
THAT'S AWESOME. >> THANK YOU SO MUCH.
>> I WANT TO SAY, JUST HOW IMPRESSED I AM.
AND OUR ROBOTICS TEAM -- HEARING FROM YOU -- GOING BACK TO WHAT MS. PARKS-REESE EARLIER, THIS IS WHAT WE ARE STRIVING FOR THIS COMMUNITY.
YOU ARE OUR LEADERS. -- YOU ARE TAKING THE TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE, THE ACTUAL ACADEMIC RIGOR, THE EXPERTISE THAT SOME OF OUR SPEAKER SPOKE TO, AND COMBINING THAT WITH SOME LEADERSHIP ELEMENTS, SOME SERVICE ELEMENTS. THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT WE ARE LOOKING TO PRODUCE IN THE SCHOOL SYSTEM.
SO, THANK YOU FOR BEING AN EXAMPLE.
>> THANK YOU SO MUCH. >> AND YOU'VE GOT SO MANY SKILLS. I DON'T KNOW IF I WANT YOU TO BE A TEACHER OR IF -- WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO?
>> I ACTUALLY WANT TO GO INTO THE ENGINEERING PROFESSION.
[00:35:01]
YOU'VE GOT A GOOD START. THANK YOU FOR HELPING OUR --
>> YOSH MENTIONED A COUPLE KEY PLAYERS IN THIS.
SO, THIS COULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED WITHOUT MS. CURRAN, THE PRINCIPAL AT THORPE CREEK -- AND MS. KRISTIE KING -- I WILL LET SOME HIGH SCHOOL KIDS COME IN AND CODE WITH MY STUDENTS, AND -- SO, SHE COULD NOT BE HERE TONIGHT, AND THEN I MS. JULIA LLONO IS YOSH'S COMPUTER SCIENCE TEACHER.
SHE HAD A TRACK MEET, THAT'S WHY SHE'S NOT HERE TONIGHT.
-- EVEN WHEN THEY FINISH THE CODE, THEY GOT ONE MORE CHALLENGE, AND IT WAS ALL THIS EAGERNESS AROUND THE OPPORTUNITY. SO, WE ARE LUCKY TO HAVE STUDENTS LIKE THIS, WHO HAVE THE FORESIGHT TO HELP THE
YOUNGER GENERATION. >> I ALSO JUST WANT TO COMMENT -- HOW COMMENDABLE AND HOW BIG YOUR HEART IS, BECAUSE EVEN DOING THAT IN YOUR BASEMENT DURING TIMES OF COVID IS ALSO COMMENDABLE AS WELL.
SO -- >> -- GREAT THINGS BEYOND HIGH SCHOOL.
SO, I'M EXCITED TO SEE WHERE THAT GOES.
THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH. APPRECIATE IT.
>> MOVING TO ITEM 5.02, -- WITH MICHELLE IAN BURTON-WATTS -- RESOURCE --
>> HOPE I DON'T MESS THIS UP, JACK.
GOOD EVENING, DR. STOKES AND BOARD.
THIS EVENING, I AM SHARING RESOURCE ADOPTION INFORMATION.
I'D LIKE TO CALL YOUR ATTENTION TO THE BOARD PROCEDURE -- CURRICULA RESOURCES, SELECTION AND ADOPTION.
I'M GOING TO BRIEFLY GO THROUGH JUST A HIGHLIGHT OF HOW THIS PROCESS WORKS. THIS PROCEDURE IS CAREFULLY FILE ODE TO ENSURE THAT WE SEE FEEDBACK FROM ALL STAKEHOLDERS, INCLUDING STUDENTS AND PARENTS IN THE SELECTION PROCESS.
COMMITTEES ARE FORMED AT THE BUILDING LEVEL, IN COLLABORATION WITH THE ASSOCIATION, TO ENSURE THAT WE HAVE REPRESENTATION. VENDORS PROVIDE SAMPLES TO SCHOOLS, AND OFTENTIMES VENDORS REACH OUT TO THE SCHOOLS AND PROVIDE THOSE ITEMS FOR US TO REVIEW PRIOR TO US REACHING OUT TO THEM FOR THEIR RESOURCES. THE COMMITTEE CREATES AN EVALUATION TOOL THAT IS BASED ON THE NEEDS OF THE STUDENTS, THE TEACHERS AND OUR DISTRICT GOALS.
SO, ALL OF THAT INFORMATION IS OUTLINED IN THE RESOURCE TOOL THAT WE USE TO EVALUATE THE RESOURCES.
AND THEN EACH RESOURCE IS REVIEWED AND ANALYZE BASED ON THAT EVALUATION TOOL. THE COMMITTEE REACHES A CONSENSUS AND MAKES THE RECOMMENDATION TO THE DIRECTOR'S -- EXECUTIVE DIRECTORS -- WE THEN COMMUNICATE THAT INFORMATION TO DR. KEGLEY, OUR SYSTEM SUPERINTENDENT, AND DR. STOKES, AND WE BRING IT BEFORE THE BOARD FOR THAT PROCESS. TONIGHT, WE HAVE ONE ENGLISH COURSE THAT WE WILL BE TALKING ABOUT, AS WELL AS WE HAVE MATT RESOURCES. INFORMATION THAT WE ARE PRESENTING IS FOR SECONDARY. AND THESE ARE THE COURSES THAT ARE TAUGHT IN JUNIOR HIGH AND HIGH SCHOOL MATH COURSES.
THEN WE ARE IDENTIFYING RESOURCES FOR ALGEBRA BUT 1 AND IT 2, AND GEOMETRY, AND -- AS WELL AS OUR HONORS LEVELS FOR ALL OF THOSE COURSES. WE ARE ALSO -- AND THAT INFORMATION IS LISTED THERE.
WE ARE ALSO RECOMMENDING DELTA MATT, WHICH IS AN ONLINE SUPPLEMENTAL RESOURCE THAT TEACHERS USE IN THEIR CLASSROOMS TO SUPPORT INSTRUCTION.
IT SERVES AS AN ASSESSMENT TOOL.
IT SERVES AS A REMEDIATION TOOL.
IT'S EXTRA PRACTICE TO. THOSE KINDS OF THINGS -- WE HAVE SEVERAL CLASSROOMS THAT PILOTED THIS PROGRAM, THIS
[00:40:01]
ONLINE RESOURCE, THIS YEAR. AND IT RECEIVED RAVE REVIEWS BY STUDENTS AND STAFF. THEREFORE, THE MATH COMMITTEE TEAM WOULD LIKE TO RECOMMEND THAT WE MOVE FORWARD IN PROVIDING THIS ONLINE SUPPLEMENTAL RESOURCE FOR ALL STUDENTS TO ACCESS, AND FOR TEACHERS TO USE IT AS THEY DEEM NECESSARY TO MEET THE STUDENTS NEEDS.AND AGAIN, THESE RESOURCES WILL BE USED FOR MATH -- I'M SORRY, FOR JUNIOR HIGH AND HIGH SCHOOL.
WE ALSO HAVE AP STATISTICS ON HERE.
THIS IS NOT A NEW RESOURCE. WE ARE JUST MOVING FROM THE TEXTBOOK VERSION OF THIS TO THE ONLINE VERSION OF THIS AND IT'S AN ELECTRONIC VERSION. SO, WE WANTED TO INCLUDE THAT ON THERE AS WELL, SINCE WE WILL NOT BE USING THE TEXTBOOK.
AND THEN, LASTLY, WE WILL BE MAKING A RECOMMENDATION FOR THE AP LITERATURE AND LANGUAGE COURSE.
WE ARE ADOPTING THIS NEW RESOURCE BECAUSE OF THE REQUIREMENTS THAT THE COLLEGE BOARD HAS PLACED ON THIS PARTICULAR COURSE. AND WE HAVE TO ALIGN WITH THOSE RECOMMENDATIONS. OKAY?
-- >> I JUST HAVE A COUPLE QUESTIONS. SO, YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT THE AP COURSES. THE COLLEGE BOARD IS WHAT DETERMINES THE CURRICULUM THAT IS INSIDE OF THAT.
AND SO, CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG, BUT OUR RESOURCES THAT WE COULD USE INSIDE THAT ARE PRETTY LIMITED?
>> CORRECT. >> SO, THESE ARE ALL ONES THAT ARE APPROVED BY THE COLLEGE BOARD, I SEE ON THESE -- PEOPLE WHO ARE MENTORS AND TRAINERS FOR AP COURSES ARE
ACTUALLY THE AUTHORS. >> THE AUTHORS --
PERFECT. SO, FOR THE DELTAMATH -- LIKE YOU SAID, IT'S SUPPLEMENTAL RESOURCE THAT WE USE. THE BIG IDEAS IS THE MORE MAIN SORT OF CURRICULUM THAT WILL BE USING.
AND IT'S DELTA SOMETHING LIKE A IXL --
THEY CAN USE THIS TOOL TO DO THAT.
BUT IT IS NOT NECESSARILY THE --
TEACHING CURRICULUM. >> THE BIG IDEAS.
>> THANK YOU. >> CAN YOU ELABORATE JUST A LITTLE BIT MORE ON DELTAMATH? -- JUST SAID, WE HAVE THE IXL. WE STILL USE ICON ACADEMY OR IS THAT JUST AT THE YOUNGER LEVELS? OR IS THAT SOMETHING THAT IS STILL THERE? DO YOU HAVE ANY OTHER ONLINE RESOURCES OTHER THAN JUST THE DELTAMATH?
>> ICON ACADEMY IS A FREE RESOURCE THAT ANYONE CAN USE.
BUT I'M SURE WE HAVE ACCESS TO IT IF -- BUT THIS SERVES IN THE SAME CAPACITY AS THAT.
HOWEVER, IT'S A LITTLE BIT MORE SPECIFIC TO THE NEEDS OF THE STUDENT, AS THE TEACHERS CAN USE IT BEFORE PERFORMATIVE ASSESSMENT, TO GIVE THEM IMMEDIATE FEEDBACK ON WHAT THE STUDENTS NEED TO KNOW. IT SHOWS THEIR GAPS IMMEDIATELY. IT PROVIDES THAT KIND OF INSTANT INFORMATION AS WELL AS PROVIDES ADDITIONAL PRACTICE.
IF IT TEACHER FEELS THAT A STUDENT NEEDS ADDITIONAL PRACTICE, IT CAN SERVE AS A REMEDIATION TOOL, AND HAS A
NUMBER OF DIFFERENT CAPACITIES. >> AND YOU MADE SOME COMMENTS THAT IT'S ALREADY BEEN PILOTED IN SOME OF -- CAN YOU EXPAND A LITTLE BIT MORE ON THAT? WAS IT JUST ONE CLASS? WAS IT ALL THREE OF THOSE? ALGEBRA, GEOMETRY? WAS IT ALL OF THEM?
>> IT WAS THE ALGEBRA COURSES THAT PILOT THE USE OF THIS, IN ADDITION TO THIS -- THIS FISCAL YEAR.
>> OKAY. THE REASON I'M ASKING IS -- I'M A DATA PERSON. I LIKE TO RESEARCH.
HE SAID THAT WE WERE DOING IT. I WENT BACK AND I LOOKED AT ALL THE DIFFERENT RESOURCE THAT WE WERE DOING.
AND ALL OF THE ONES THAT WE WERE ON THEY ARE -- LIKE, BIG IDEAS, I'VE HEARD REVIEWS ABOUT.
I WAS VERY IMPRESSED WITH ALL THE THINGS THAT I LEARNED BUT I'M STRUGGLING A LITTLE BIT WITH THE DELTAMATH.
THE REASON WHY IS, I WENT THROUGH THERE, AND WENT THROUGH A LOT OF THE REVIEWS. IT HAS A LOT OF REVIEWS ON THERE. SO, I KNOW OUR SCHOOL'S LIKES IT. THAT'S RIGHT HERE.
BUT OUT OF 87 REVIEWS, IT WAS SHOWING A 1.5 OUT OF FIVE.
SO, I WANT TO ASK, HOW WE GOT OUR REVIEWS.
AND IT IS ALSO RANKING AT TWO. I THINK IT SAID SOMETHING LIKE -- HE WAS LIKE 1667 OUT OF 1700 FOR RESOURCES. SO, AGAIN, IT IS FROM THE DELTAMATH RESOURCE ONLINE. I WENT AND LOOKED.
AGAIN, I'M NOT THE EXPERT. I DON'T KNOW.
BUT WHEN I SEE THAT KIND OF INFORMATION, IT MADE ME ASK, HOW WE GOT OUR POSITIVE INFORMATION WHEN THERE WERE SO MANY NEGATIVE REVIEWS ON THEIR. AND LIKE I SAID, I LOOKED AT BIG IDEAS, LOVED, IT GOT ALL THE GREAT --
[00:45:02]
AND I'M NOT AN EXPERT IN THAT. THAT'S WHY I'M ASKING YOU FOR THAT FEEDBACK.>> FOR MY UNDERSTANDING, THIS RESOURCE WAS CREATED BY TEACHERS. I'M NOT SURE OF ALL OF THEIR COMMENTS THAT YOU MAY HAVE REVIEWED.
BUT QUITE A FEW, WHEN I DID GO ON -- QUITE A FEW OF THOSE COMMENTS WERE BY STUDENTS WHO WERE DISGRUNTLED ABOUT THEIR ASSIGNMENTS THAT THEIR TEACHER MADE THEM. SO, I DID SEE SOME OF THAT.
I DON'T KNOW WHAT NUMBER YOU ARE REFERENCING.
I WOULD NEED TO GO BACK IN AND LOOK AT THAT 1000 NUMBER, WHATEVER YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT. BUT I TRUST OUR TEACHERS.
AND I TRUST THE FACT THAT THEY HAVE HAD A YEAR TO REVIEW AND USE THIS TOOL TO ENHANCE INSTRUCTION AND TO ENSURE THAT OUR STUDENTS ARE OBTAINING THE NECESSARY MASTERY THAT THEY NEED TO DEMONSTRATE, THAT THEY UNDERSTAND WHAT IS GOING ON IN THE CLASS. AND WE HAVE A VERY EXTENSIVE POGRAM AND PROCESS THAT WE GO THROUGH TO ENSURE THAT WE ARE MAKING THE BEST CHOICES THAT WE CAN FOR OUR STUDENTS.
AND I HAVE TO LEAN INTO WHAT OUR TEACHERS ARE PROVIDING US, AS WELL AS -- WE DISCUSS IT AS A DISTRICT OFFICE AS WELL. AND SO --
>> ARE WE LOCKED IN ON THAT ONE? AGAIN, I'M NOT THE EXPERT ON IT. BUT I KNOW THERE ARE OTHER RESOURCES OUT THERE. ARE WE LOCKED IN ON THAT? THAT MAYBE WE CAN -- I MEAN, I'M LOOKING AT A LOT OF COMMENTS HERE. SO, FOR ME PERSONALLY, I'M NOT SUPPORTING IT YET, UNLESS I COULD POSSIBLY SEE A SIDE-BY-SIDE THAT SHOWS THREE OR FOUR OTHER COMPARISONS THAT SAY, LOOK, THIS IS THE BEST VALUE, THIS IS BEST FOR OUR KIDS, IT REALLY HELPS OUR REMEDIATION.
AND I HEAR WHAT YOU ARE SAYING, WHEN YOU HEAR SOME COMMENTS FROM STUDENTS, BUT I SAW SOME FROM TEACHERS, SOME FROM ADULTS. SO, I KNOW THERE IS NOT PROBABLY NOT ANY ONE PERFECT ONE.
AND IT JUST SEEMED LIKE A PRETTY BIG AMOUNT OF PEOPLE THAT DIDN'T LIKE IT. AND I DON'T KNOW THESE PEOPLE.
SO, I WANT TO TRUST THE SCHOOL DISTRICT.
BUT I'M ALSO READING A LOT OF NEGATIVES.
SO, I'M JUST ASKING IF THERE IS --
>> YEAH. AND I DON'T KNOW THAT I HAVE A GREAT ANSWER FOR THAT OUTSIDE OF, YOU ARE GOING TO GET PROS
AND CONS WITH EVERY RESOURCE. >> OKAY.
>> AGAIN, I TRUST THE FACT THAT OUR TEACHERS HAVE USED THIS, AND THEY FEEL CONFIDENT THAT IT IS SOMETHING WE SHOULD EXPAND ACROSS THESE PARTICULAR AREAS. IT'S VERY COST EFFECTIVE.
IT'S ONLY $1 PER STUDENT, COMPARED TO OTHER RESOURCES.
AND THAT'S PROBABLY -- I DON'T KNOW.
>> CAN YOU SHARE -- ARE WE CURRENTLY USING SIMILAR
RESOURCE? >> WE ARE USING A SIMILAR RESOURCE. LET ME FIND THE NAME OF THAT.
I DON'T KNOW IF I HAVE THAT HANDY.
>> AND DO WE KNOW -- TO PIGGYBACK ON THAT, ARE IF WE ARE USING ANOTHER ONE, HOW LONG HAVE WE'VE BEEN USING THAT ONE? AND ARE WE GETTING ANY POSITIVE RESULTS FROM THAT?
>> WE HAVE BEEN USING MATH SPACE.
AND I THINK WE HAVE BEEN USING THAT FOR MAYBE A COUPLE OF YEARS SINCE, MAYBE, COVID. BUT IT DOES NOT PROVIDE THE IMMEDIATE PERFORMATIVE ASSESSMENT FEEDBACK, WHO IS THE NUMBER ONE WE ARE HEARING FROM TEACHERS, THAT WE NEED TO MAKE IMMEDIATE AND INSTANT INSTRUCTIONAL CHANGE TO WORK WITH THE -- COMMITTEES.
>> SO, KIDS THAT MIGHT HAVE NEEDED REMEDIATION OR -- NOT MASTERING THE SCALE. -- IMMEDIATELY ALLOWS THEM TO KNOW --
THEY NEED ASSISTANCE NOW. >> YES.
>> THANK YOU. >> TEACHER REPORT, SO TO SPEAK,
RIGHT? >> I HAVE JUST A COUPLE OF QUICK QUESTIONS. AND THANK YOU FOR DOING ALL THIS RESEARCH. BECAUSE, AS I MENTIONED, WE ARE NOT EXPERTS IN THIS. WE TRUST YOUR JUDGMENT WHEN IT COMES TO THESE THINGS. I THINK, BIG PICTURE, OVERALL, WHEN LOOKING AT CURRICULUM AND THINGS, MY PRIORITIES ARE A STRUCTURED APPROACH AND A RIGOROUS APPROACH.
AND I FEEL LIKE THESE AND THE -- STORY AND ALL THOSE THINGS AND ALL -- OUTSIDE OF THE CORE ACADEMIC -- ESPECIALLY THINGS LIKE MATT.
I'M A LITTLE -- WITH MS. THOMAS HERE.
WITH EACH OF THESE -- FOCUS ON THE TOPIC AT HAND, THAT THEY ARE MADE AND DESIGNED TO -- THEY ARE RIGOROUS, THEY ARE TOUGH.
I DON'T MIND IF THE -- THAT'S PROBABLY THE ONE WE SHOULD PICK. WITH ALL OF THAT -- MY ONLY OTHER QUESTION IS, THERE WAS AN EMPHASIS --
[00:50:07]
-- TO GO WITH MORE ELECTRONIC THINGS. WE DO IT IN MY DAY JOB AND EVERYWHERE. I STILL FEEL THERE IS REAL VALUE. YOU SEE, THERE'S -- I'M THE ONLY ONE WITH -- NEVER FAILS TO LOAD, NEVER NEEDS AND INTERNET CONNECTION. THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT GETTING A PAPER AND PEN OUT. THIS IS PROBABLY SOMETHING FOR US TO CONSIDER MORE AS PRACTICES IN THE SCHOOL ROOM AND DAY TODAY AND THAT KIND OF THINGS.AND DR. STOKES CAN SPEAK TO. THAT -- MOVING FURTHER AWAY FROM TEXTBOOKS AND WORKSHEETS AND PAPER AND PEN. I KNOW DOESN'T GET YOU THE INSTANT INFORMATION. MIKE IT TAKES A TEST AND SOMEBODY HAS TO SIT THERE IN GRADE IT AND -- I AT LEAST OUT WE FIND A BALANCE WITH THAT.
>> I WANT TO JUMP IN -- I DON'T DISAGREE WITH WHAT YOU ARE SAYING. BUT YOU HAVE GOT TO THINK, AN ELECTRONIC BOOK CAN STILL BE SOMETHING YOU LOOK AT THE ASSIGNMENTS. BUT -- WHAT'S NOT ABOUT THE ELECTRONIC BOOKS, YOU CAN HAVE AN INTERACTIVE -- THAT YOU CAN'T SEE CAPPING OFF THAT PAPER. BUT YOU CAN SEE IT IN AN ELECTRONIC BOOK. SO, THERE'S SO MUCH MORE THAT STUDENTS CAN ACTUALLY VISUALIZE AND USE ALL OF THEIR SENSES, EXCEPT SMELL, PROBABLY, WHEN YOU HAVE AN ELECTRONIC BOOK.
BUT YOU CAN STILL LOOK AT THE PROBLEMS AND WRITE WHATEVER YOU WANT TO DO ON PAPER, MAYBE. IN MOST CASES, THOUGH, YOU CAN ANSWER IT RIGHT ONLINE. SO, IT JUST MORE USER FRIENDLY AND YOU CAN ACTUALLY LEARN MORE AND FASTER THAN YO CAN JUST
>> -- LET'S GET BACK TO FOCUSING ON
THE ISSUE ON THE MATH, ENGLISH. >> I APOLOGIZE.
>> I'M LOOKING AT THE -- STORY, THE AP RESOURCE, THAT'S A CONSUMABLE THAT STUDENTS CAN USE.
THEY CAN WRITE, THEY CAN MARKUP THE TEXT, THEY CAN USE THOSE KINDS OF THINGS. I THINK THE TEACHERS ARE AWARE ABOUT THAT CONCERN, OF EVERYTHING GOING ELECTRONIC, AND THEY DO BEST TO CREATE A BALANCE FOR THAT.
BUT ALL OF THE TEST THAT WE GIVE OUR STUDENTS, I LEARNED -- ONLINE, AND THEY HAVE TO LEARN HOW TO MANEUVER THROUGH THAT TEST, MARKUP THEIR TEXT WITH ONLINE.
THEY HAVE TO USE A CALCULATOR THAT'S ONLINE.
SO, WE ARE JUST TRYING TO PREPARE THEM FOR EVERYTHING THAT THEY ARE GOING TO ENCOUNTER AS YOUNG ADULTS IN
THE WORLD. >> I THINK WE HAVE TO REMEMBER TOO -- WHEN I TALK TO MY BOYS, PAPER AND PENCIL, YOU KNOW -- IT WAS FUNDAMENTAL TO WHAT I DID IN SCHOOL. AND THEY ARE LIVING IN A DIFFERENT ERA. WHETHER WE LIKE IT OR NOT, THAT'S WHERE WE ARE AT. I DON'T ALWAYS AGREE WITH HOW EVERYTHING IS DONE. BUT I THINK THAT'S BECAUSE OF WHERE I STARTED. I STARTED WITH THAT PAPER, WITH THE HASH LINES, LEARNING TO WRITE MY ALPHABET.
SO, I THINK THERE IS A BALANCE FOR SURE.
BUT I JUST THINK, IN LISTENING TO MY BOYS TALK ABOUT IT -- YOU KNOW, MY SON WAS COMPLAINING, BECAUSE SOME ESSAY HE HAS THE RIGHT IS GOING TO BE ON PAPER IN THE CLASSROOM.
AND HE SAID, I CAN'T GO BACK AND CORRECT AND ADD SOMETHING, BECAUSE IT WILL BE ON PAPER. AND A BIG DEAL, THAT'S WHAT I DID FOUR YEARS. BUT THEY ARE JUST GROWING UP IN A DIFFERENT ERA. SO, FOR WHATEVER THAT'S WORTH.
>> SO, I HAD A QUESTION. YOU LIST OUT THE COST FOR STUDENT PER SEMESTER FOR EACH OF THESE.
I APPRECIATE THE COST BREAKDOWN.
WHAT IS THE GUESSTIMATED -- HELPFUL TO UNDERSTAND, SO WE CAN UNDERSTAND FROM THAT, A COST ESTIMATE, FOR THE
PROGRAMS. >> YEAH, THESE COSTS ARE CHEAPER THAN WHAT THEY ARE BEING CHARGED RIGHT NOW.
THEY HAVE GONE DOWN SINCE. >> OKAY.
>> I CAN GIVE YOU WHAT THE OVERALL AMOUNT IS.
BUT I DO KNOW IT'S A LITTLE CHEAPER THAN --
>> SO, FOR ALL OF THEM, IN GENERAL?
>> YES. >> OBVIOUSLY, THERE IS THE NEW ONE. THE DELTA'S NEW.
-- >> HE'S THIS GOING TO REPLACE MATH SPACE? --
>> THIS WOULD REPLACE MATH SPACE --
>> I HAVE A QUICK QUESTION FOR ALL THE AP HORSES, DO THESE TRANSLATE INTO COLLEGE CREDITS, WHILE WE ARE SITTING HERE?
>> YES, IF THEY PASS THE TEST AND THE, UNIVERSITY ACCEPTS
THE OTHER QUESTION, I HAD THE SAME CONCERNS THAT MS. I THOMAS HAD. YES, YOU GUYS ARE THE PROFESSIONALS IN THE ROOM, AND I TRUST WHAT YOU ARE DOING.
BUT WHEN WE LOOK AT THE WRITING NUMBERS, I WONDER, IS THERE A BETTER PROGRAM? ARE WE NOT GOING TO THE BEST? AND I DON'T KNOW. BECAUSE I AM TRUSTING.
YEAH. >> I'M SURE EVERYONE'S PRODUCT IS THE BEST. YOU KNOW? LIKE I SAID, I TRUST THE TEACHERS WHO HAVE BEEN USING THIS ALL YEAR. AND THEIR TEAMS HAVE ASSESSED
[00:55:01]
THIS AND DEEMED IT APPROPRIATE FOR WHAT WE NEED TO DO TO MOVE FORWARD.>> ONE LAST THING I WANTED TO ADD.
I KNOW SOMETIMES IF WE ARE ALL HAPPY AND SEEM TO BE IN AGREEMENT, WE LIKE TO MOVE FORWARD.
I THINK THERE WERE SOME EXCELLENT POINTS RAISED EARLIER THAT THERE HAS NOT BEEN A LOT OF TIME FOR US TO LOOK THROUGH EVERYTHING. COMMUNITY -- I LIKE TO ENGAGE, LIKE HE SAID, ALL THE STAKEHOLDERS, GET A LITTLE FEEDBACK. SO, MY THOUGHT WOULD BE TO LEAVE THIS AS AN INFORMATION ITEM, TAKE ANY MORE FEEDBACK, AND THEN HOPEFULLY NEXT TIME MOVE FORWARD.
BUT IS THERE ANYTHING THAT WE NEED TO DO RIGHT NOW, WERE YOU LOOKING TO GET ANYTHING -- TIME CONSTRAINTS ASSOCIATED --
>> YEAH, THERE ARE TIME RESTRAINTS.
THERE'S TRAINING THAT THE TEACHERS WOULD NEED TO HAVE -- TRYING TO DO. WE HAVE TO LOOK AT THE FEES, GET THOSE FEES TO OUR BUSINESS DEPARTMENT, SO THEY CAN CALCULATE AND DO THOSE KINDS OF THINGS.
SO, THERE ARE SOME TIME CONSTRAINTS.
>> WOULD THERE BE ANY CHANGES OR ANYTHING TO CONSIDER WITH THE LATEST LEGISLATION THAT JUST CAME OUT ON -- DOES THAT CHANGE ANYTHING? OBVIOUSLY, WITHIN THIS?
AS WE JUST -- >> IF I COULD JUMP IN REAL QUICK ON THAT TOPIC, AND TRY TO -- TRY TO WAIT FOR SOMEBODY TO TAKE A BREATH.
I'M GLAD YOU SAID THAT. BECAUSE, IF YOU CAN SCROLL DOWN, MICHELLE, TO THE MAT ADOPTION, AND THE RATIONALE THAT IS THERE, IT TALKS ABOUT ALGEBRA 1 AND GEOMETRY AND ALGEBRA 1 2 -- -- HOUSE BILL 1635 HAS A SECTION THAT SAYS THE LEGISLATURE IS BASICALLY TELLING THE STATE BOARD THAT THEY WILL DEVELOP ALGEBRA 1 AND ALGEBRA 2 AND GEOMETRY COURSES THAT INCLUDE A REAL WORLD APPLICATION AND B PROJECT MASON INQUIRY BASED LEARNING.
AND THOSE WILL BE IMPLEMENTED NOT LATER THAN 25, 26 SCHOOL YEAR. SO, I THINK THAT THE RECOMMENDATIONS DOVETAIL NICELY WITH THE RECENT LEGISLATION AND PUT US, MAYBE, A YEAR AHEAD OF TIME, IF NOT TO.
>> IF THERE IS A TIME CONSTRAINT OF SORTS -- AND I DON'T KNOW HOW THE REST OF THE BOARD FEELS, SO I'M JUST GOING TO ASK -- WOULD THAT AT ALL WOULD BE BENEFICIAL IF THE OTHER RESOURCES, MINUS DELTAMATH WAS PRESENTED TONIGHT TO ACTION FOR MOVING FORWARD? AND MAYBE WE CAN GET TO SIDE BY SIDE OF ANOTHER OF COUPLE PROGRAMS OR WE CAN HAVE MORE RESEARCH INTO THE DELTAMATH AND
THEN COME BACK TO THAT? >> THAT A IS STILL A PART OF STUDENT FEES. AND IT HAS TO BE --
>> I AGREE. I'M JUST TRYING TO -- EXPEDITE THE OTHER PART AND -- DO WE MEET AGAIN IN TWO WEEKS -- NOT TWO WEEKS --
>> I THINK THIS IS ALSO A DECISION THAT THE ASSOCIATION HAS TO BE ACTIVELY INVOLVED IN TOO.
SO, IT'S NOT UNILATERAL. IT'S A LITTLE MULTIDIMENSIONAL.
SO -- EVAN, YOU WANT TO COME ON UP?
>> THERE'S A LITTLE BIT OF A TIME CONSTRAINT TO, BECAUSE ONCE WE ASK THEM TO COME TO A COMMITTEE MEETING AFTER HOURS, AFTER -- WE HAVE -- YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE TO PAY THAT COMMITTEE TO WRITE AND REVIEW CURRICULA. SO, THERE'S TIME ON THAT TOO.
AND WE ONLY HAVE, WHAT? 11 DAYS? AND SO, THAT COST -- YOU CAN DO IT.
BUT IT'S THAT THE COST. AND THOSE TEACHERS --
>> IF THEY ARE WILLING -- >> --
WOULD HAVE TO BE PAID. >> I'M CURIOUS.
AND SINCE WE'VE GOT YOU UP THERE --
>> YEAH? >> FOR THE TEACHER SIDE OF THIS, AND FOR THE PEOPLE THAT ARE INVOLVED AND THE CRITICISM, CAN YOU SPEAK TO THAT, FROM THE TEACHERS PERSPECTIVE? THE REPLACEMENT OF THE MATH -- SO WE CAN GET MORE INSTANT FEEDBACK ON IT? WHAT WAS THE GENERAL CONSENSUS? I KNOW WE DON'T LIKE TO GET INTO NUMBERS.
BUT IT'S 100% SUPPORT? 51%? OBVIOUSLY, THEY SUPPORT, OR IT WOULD NOT BE ON HERE.
WAS IT OVERWHELMING? WE FEEL LIKE WE CAPTURED THE GENERAL SENSE OF WHAT THE TEACHERS WANT?
>> I DON'T TEACH ALGEBRA. THAT'S JUST NOT WHAT I DO.
I TEACH -- BUT I PICK PEOPLE WHO ARE THE EXPERTS IN THIS. AND THEY ARE THE ONES WHO ARE TELLING ME WHAT IS BEST FOR THIS.
AND I REACH OUT IF THERE ARE ANY CONCERNS -- THOSE TEACHERS REACH OUT TO ME. I CAN TELL YOU THIS.
THERE WAS A CONCERN IN ENGLISH PART OF IT.
LIKE, THEY COULDN'T DECIDE WHICH ONE THEY WANTED.
IT WASN'T A MATTER OF, THEY DID NOT LIKE ONE OR THE OTHER.
THEY JUST DID NOT CARE EITHER WAY.
[01:00:01]
SO WE HAD TO HAVE -- I HAD TO GO AND GET MORE INFORMATION AROUND THAT. IN THIS CASE, THERE WAS NO CONCERN FROM ANY OF THE TEACHERS THAT EVEN GOT THE NOTES WHO SAID, THIS IS WHAT WE WERE DOING, OR ANYTHING.SO, THERE WAS NO NEGATIVE FEEDBACK ON THIS.
SO, THEY TRUSTED THE PEOPLE THAT WERE ON THE COMMITTEE.
AND THAT IS GOOD FOR MY SIDE OF THINGS.
AND I WILL ALSO SAY, THE INSTANT FEEDBACK IS WHAT ALL TEACHERS DREAM OF WHEN WE ARE LOOKING AT ANY TYPE OF DIGITAL RESOURCE. AND SO, WE CAN USE IT RIGHT THERE IN THE CLASS AS THEY ARE LEARNING.
THEY ANSWER IT. AND I CAN GO STRAIGHT TO THAT AND GIVE THEM INTERVENTIONS OR RETEACH ANYTHING LIKE THAT.
>> THIS IS SLIGHTLY OFF TOPIC, A LITTLE BIT.
BUT IS THERE ANY CONCERN OF WHAT DR. STOKES WAS TALKING ABOUT A LITTLE BIT, GOING MORE DISTRACTION DIGITAL AND THINGS, MORE DISTRACTION ON THINGS? THE KIDS ARE ON THEIR IPADS.
THE KIDS CAN FOOL AROUND ON IT. TO THE TEACHERS --
DR. ALBRIGHT MENTIONED -- >> DR. ALBRIGHT MENTIONED IT JUST GREAT. THE KIDS ARE GOING -- THEY ARE DIGITAL MINDED. WE ARE NOT GOING BACK TO PAPER AND PENCIL. THEY CAN USE IT IN A BALANCE, FOR SURE. BECAUSE THEY ARE GOING TO SEE IT EVERYWHERE THAT THEY GO. BUT THE REAL WORLD IS NOT GOING
-- >> OKAY, SO, OFFICIALLY, THEY THINK BOARD MEMBER ORR IS OLD, CRAZY, AND NOT IN TOUCH.
>> I WILL TELL YOU. -- SAND CREEK INTERMEDIATE, THEY GOT -- ARE WE WRITING THIS OR ARE WE TYPING THIS? AND THE TEACHER SAID, TYPING, AND THEY WERE LIKE, YAY! THERE WAS EMOTION RIGHT AWAY. IT WAS LIKE THEY WON THE LOTTERY. SO, YOU ARE OLD, THAT'S WHAT THAT MEANS. AND SO AM I.
YEAH, WE ARE ALL OLD. >> SO, JUANITA HAS STEPPED OUT REAL QUICK. SO, SUZANNE, BASED ON THE INFORMATION, AND I'M TAKING A POLL, WOULD YOU SAY THE ISSUES YOU SAW WERE MORE TECHNICAL, AND EVEN MORE PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT, FROM A TECHNOLOGY PERSPECTIVE? OR WAS IT THE FRUSTRATION -- I DID NOT GET THE ANSWERS OR THE GRADE THAT I THOUGHT I SHOULD DESERVE?
>> I READ SEVERAL DIFFERENT THINGS.
SOME OF THE STUFF THAT THEY HAD.
THEY WERE HAVING A LOT OF TECHNICAL ISSUES.
AND INCORRECT LOADING. SOMETIMES PROBLEMS WERE WHEN THEY GOT SOMETHING RIGHT, IT SAID IT WAS WRONG, AND WHEN THEY'S SAID IT WAS WRONG, IT WAS RIGHT.
AGAIN, I'M NOT THE EXPERT. >> WAS IT, THOUGH?
>> LOOK, WE CAN LAUGH ALL WE WANT.
BUT THIS IS FOR OUR DISTRICT AND OUR STUDENTS.
I RESPECT OUR TEACHERS. I THINK THAT'S AWESOME.
I'M JUST NOT COMFORTABLE AT THIS POINT -- I DON'T WANT TO USE THE WORDS PUSHING THROUGH.
BUT APPROVING IN SAYING, LET'S GO WITH THIS ONE WITHOUT A BIT MORE RESEARCH ON IT, OTHER THAN A DAY AND A HALF --
>> MS. -- >> -- I WOULD ASK THAT WE MOVE THIS ONE OUT OF IT.
>> THANK YOU FOR YOUR DATA. BUT I THINK IT MIGHT MEAN MORE TO US IF WE KNEW, LIKE HE SAID, 1000.
1000 OUT OF 50 MILLION OR 1 MILLION.
MY RESULTS I HAVE FROM THE ACTUAL WEBSITE -- AND THEN REVIEWS THAT WENT THROUGH, WHERE THERE WAS 87 REVIEWS -- THAT'S RESEARCHING DELTAMATH ONLINE. AND IT GAVE IT A FINAL RANKING OF 1.5 OUT OF FIVE. AND I WAS LIKE, OKAY, LET ME DO MORE. THERE'S GOT TO BE SOMETHING MORE TO THAT. SO, I WENT IN AND DID MORE RESEARCH. AND I WENT TO A SITE THAT PULLED UP DELTAMATH, AND IT RESEARCHED EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS, AND ONLINE MATH. AND IT RANKED EIGHTH 1649 OUT OF 1706 USEFUL RESOURCES. AND I GOT MORE CONCERNED.
SO, THEN I WENT IN AND DID IT AS A STUDENT.
AND I LOGGED IN AND TRIED TO DO THE WORK.
AND IT'S HARD TO IMPORT THE EXPONENTS.
I HAD TROUBLE ON THAT ONE. I DID A PROBLEM AND I WAS TRYING TO RESEARCH. I'M JUST SAYING, I WOULD LIKE TO PLAY AROUND WITH IT MORE, AND ENCOURAGE OTHERS TO DO IT.
AGAIN, I'M NOT THE EXPERT. IF YOU GUYS ALL WANT TO VOTE FOR, YOU CAN VOTE FOR IT. BUT I'M JUST GOING TO ASK THAT WE PULL THIS OUT OF IT, AND I CAN VOTE NO.
>> I WOULD ASK THAT IF YOU ARE NOT GOING TO PROVE THAT, THAT YOU COULD SEND US THE SITES THAT YOU VISITED, SO THAT WE MAY INVESTIGATE THAT A LITTLE FURTHER.
>> YES, I AGREE. >> ACTUALLY, I HAVE ONE THING.
WE WERE TALKING ABOUT WHEN YOU ENTER THE ANSWER IN, IT'S THE CORRECT ANSWER BUT IT COMES OUT WRONG.
THAT IS TRUE OF EVERY SINGLE ONLINE MATH.
I DO EXCEL IEXCEL WITH MY DAUGHTER --
[01:05:09]
IF YOU ACCIDENTALLY HITS THE SPACE WAR BEFORE SHE ENTERS THE NUMBER, IT COULD BE RIGHT BUT -- THREE MORE PROBLEMS TO GET TO THE PROFICIENCY LEVEL SHE NEEDS TO GET -- AND SHE GETS MAD.BUT IT IS WHAT IT IS. AND SOMETIMES IF THERE IS A SPACE AT IT AFTERWARDS. IT JUST SORT OF HOW THE SOFTWARE WORKS. AND IT'S JUST WHAT IT IS TO BE DIGITAL. SO, I DON'T KNOW THAT -- I JUST WANTED TO MAKE THAT COMMENT THAT THAT IS NOT SPECIFIC TO DELTAMATH. THAT IS EVERY ONE OF MY FIVE KIDS THAT USE DIFFERENT ONLINE MATT RESOURCES.
IT'S BEEN THAT WAY FOR ALL OF THEM.
AND SOME OF THE TIMES, WHERE SHE HAS TO GO IN AND DO SQUARE ROUTES OR EXPONENTS OR RIGHT AT THE EQUATION, AND I AM TRYING TO FIGURE OUT ON HER IPAD HOW TO DO IT.
AND I'M LIKE, WHERE IS THAT? AND SHE JUST GOES -- THEY KNOW HOW TO DO IT AND WE DON'T.
AND I THINK I'M PRETTY TECHIE AND I THINK I STILL SOMETIMES CAN'T FIGURE OUT THE SAME THINGS IN THE MATT PROGRAM.
BUT SHE HAS LEARNED AND SHE KNOWS HOW TO DO IT.
SO, I JUST WANTED TO ADD THAT. >> DR. STOKES, I EMAILED YOU TODAY. DID YOU GET THE --
>> I HAVE BEEN AWAY IN CONFERENCE TODAY.
>> I WILL FORWARD IT TO THEM -- I'VE GOT TO LEAVE RIGHT AFTER HERE AND GO BACK.
>> I THINK WE ALSO HAVE TO BE CAREFUL ABOUT REVIEWS.
BECAUSE THEY ARE JUST SUBJECT TO REVIEW'S.
BECAUSE THE WEBSITE I'M LOOKING AT COMMONSENSE.ORG HAS A FIVE STAR COMMUNITY RATING. SO, DIFFERENT PLACES ARE GOING
TO WAIT IT DIFFERENTLY. >> LIKE I SAID, I AM --
>> IF YOU GUYS MOVE FORWARD ON THE OTHER MATERIALS, I WOULD JUST ASK, IF YOU ARE GOING TO DO IT, PULL DELTAMATH SO I CAN VOTE ACCORDINGLY, AND THE REST OF YOU CAN VOTE FOR IT.
>> I'M GOING TO CLOSE DISCUSSION.
I HAVE A RECOMMENDED ACTION TO MOTION TO IMPROVE HIGH SCHOOL MATH RECOMMENDATIONS AS PRESENTED.
>> IT HAS TO BE A MOTION -- >> -- LET'S PUT A MOTION ON THE TABLE -- TO ACTION. AND THEN IF IT'S VOTED ON AS BEING AN ACTION ITEM, WE WILL TAKE IT FROM THERE.
>> UNDERSTOOD. >> DOES ANYONE ELSE HAVE ANY OTHER QUESTIONS? NO? MOTION TO MOVE, FROM INFORMATION TO AN AK CHIN ITEM.
>> I WOULD MOVE TO MOVE THE HIGH SCHOOL MATH RESOURCE AND THE HIGH SCHOOL ENGLISH RESOURCES TO ACTION ITEMS.
>> IS THERE A SECOND? >> SECOND.
>> DISCUSSION? I >> WOULD LIKE TO MAKE A FRIENDLY MOTION TO THAT, THAT WE REMOVE DELTAMATH FROM THAT MOTION. SO, IF I MADE A FRIENDLY MOTION TO THAT THAT WOULD SAY -- JUST THAT I MOVE TO APPROVE THE RESOURCES THAT WERE PRESENTED TODAY, EXCLUDING DELTA MA
DELTAMATH? >> SO YOU ARE AMENDING THE MOTION THAT IS ON THE TABLE, TO REMOVE DELTAMATH?
>> THAT MEANS THE SECOND, AND A DISCUSSION AS WELL.
>> IS THERE A SECOND ON THE AMENDMENT?
>> I SECONDED THE AMENDMENT. >> NOW, WE ARE OPEN FOR
DISCUSSION. >> OPEN FOR DISCUSSION ON THE
AMENDMENT -- >> SO, THE MOTION ON THE TABLE IS TO APPROVE EVERYTHING BUT THE DELTAMATH.
>> -- MOVE EVERYTHING TO ACTION --
>> EVERYTHING EXCEPT DELTA. >> OKAY.
UNDERSTOOD. >> IF THERE IS NO DISCUSSION, I WILL CLOSE DISCUSSION. CALLS FOR A VOTE --
>> ORR -- >> TIFFANY PASCOE >> SORRY --
>> -- THE MOTION ON THE TABLE IS THE MOTION THAT SUZANNE THAT WAS JUST SECONDED BY TIFFANY.
>> THAT'S CORRECT. >> SO IT'S, THE AMENDED --
>> MINUS THE DELTA. >> ALSO, IT'S JUST TO MOVE IT
[01:10:03]
TO ACTION, RIGHT? WE ARE NOT ACTUALLY VOTING ONTHE RESOURCE. >> THAT'S CORRECT.
NOW THAT WE HAVE CLARITY. >> I WAS JUST --
>> NO, I'M GLAD YOU ARE. HERE I WILL JUST START OVER.
>> -- >> LAST ITEM ON THE ACTION LIST
>> EXERCISE AGAIN THIS WOULD BE FANTASTIC.
>> SO -- >> SO YOU NEED ANOTHER MOTION
ON THE TABLE TO APPROVE -- >> -- I APPROVE -- I MOVE -- I APOLOGIZE. I MOVE TO APPROVE THE RESOURCES, LITERATURE, AP LITERATURE, BIG IDEAS, ALGEBRA AND THE
STATISTICS. >> SO, ALL RESOURCES EXCEPT
DELTA? >> YES, ALL THE RESOURCES
>> OKAY, SO, SUZANNE THOMAS -- FIRST MOTION.
AND JUANITA ALBRIGHT SECONDED. >> OKAY.
>> ANY DISCUSSION? >> CALLING FOR A VOTE.
>> THE MOTION PASSES 7 TO 0. >> MOVING ON TO ITEM SUBJECTS 5.03, FOOD SERVICE REVIEW, MS. CAM OGDEN.
>> OKAY. FIRST, I WANTED TO ACKNOWLEDGE AND THANK OUR FOOD SERVICE STAFF.
THEY ARE AN AMAZING GROUP OF MEN AND WOMEN THAT HAS COME EVERY DAY TO FEED OUR CHILDREN. TO FEED OUR CHILDREN AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THEIR WORLD -- JUST A LITTLE BIT OF OVERVIEW OF OUR FOOD SERVICE DEPARTMENT. WE ARE VERY HIGHLY REGULATED BY THE USDA. A LOT OF IT HAS TO DO WITH FEDERAL FUNDING. SO, UNDER OUR FUNDING, WE ARE JUST LIKE ANY BUSINESS. WE HAVE EXPENSES.
WE HAVE REVENUE. OUR REVENUE IT'S BASICALLY THREE DIFFERENT AVENUES THAT IT COMES FROM.
FEDERAL DOLLARS. OUR FEDERAL DOLLARS COME FROM REIMBURSEMENTS FOR OUR STUDENTS.
SO, FROM EVERY MEAL THAT WE SERVE, FREE REDUCED AND PAID, WE RECEIVE REIMBURSEMENT. AND ALSO THE GOVERNMENT WILL GIVE US A LOT OF SO MANY DOLLARS TO -- WITH THOSE DOLLARS I WILL TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THAT AND HOW THAT WORKS. AND OF COURSE, THERE IS EXPENSES. OKAY.
SORRY. AND THEN, OUR REVENUE STREAM, OUR SECOND, IS OUR CASH PURCHASES, WHICH COULD BE OUR STUDENTS, OUR Ć LA CARTE, OR OUR ADULT SERVICES.
-- WE ARE TRYING TO BUILD A BIGGER CATERING DEPARTMENT. I FORWARDED SOME PICTURES TO
DR. STOKES THIS WEEK. >> OKAY.
>> -- >> I KNOW, IT LOOKED AMAZING.
THEY ALSO RECEIVED SOME COMMENTS THAT THEY WERE SHOCKED -- NOT SHOCKED.
BUT PLEASANTLY SURPRISED WITH THE JOB.
THEY WERE AMAZED THAT IT WAS FOOD SERVICE CATERING.
BECAUSE, WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT, HOW THEY DID IT, IN THEIR PRESENTATION. BUT THEY ARE AN AWESOME GROUP.
[01:15:01]
OUR EXPENSES ARE LABOR, FOOD, PAPER, SMALLER.WITH OUR PARTICIPATION, THAT'S KIND OF OUR BENCHMARK, HOW WE DETERMINE HOW WE ARE DOING. SO, PARTICIPATION, THAT PERCENTAGE THERE IS THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS THAT EAT AND PURCHASE A FULL MEAL. WHEN WE SAY A FULL MEAL, WHEN WE ARE DOING OUR FOOD PLANNING, OUR MENUS HAVE TO HAVE FIVE COMPONENTS. MEAT ALTERNATIVE, GRAIN, FRUIT, VEGETABLE AND A DAIRY. AND TO CREATE A FULL MEAL, A STUDENT HAS TO PURCHASE THREE OUT OF THE FIVE COMPONENTS.
THEY CAN GET ALL OF THEM BUT TO GET ALL OF THOSE THREE -- FRUIT OR VEGETABLE. BUT THEY CAN GET ALL THE COMPONENTS. SO, THOSE NUMBERS SHOW ONLY WHAT WE SAY, IN PARTICIPATION, ONLY SHOW THE NUMBER OF MALES THAT WE HAVE ACTUALLY SERVED. ON TOP OF THAT WOULD BE, IT DOES NOT TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE HIGHSCHOOLERS THAT ARE TAKING ACCOUNT A SANDWICH OR A GATORADE.
THAT IS THE MEAL. THAT DOES NOT INCLUDE THAT NUMBER. AND THEN THE LAST PART OF OUR DEPARTMENT IS FREE, REDUCED, AND DIRECT CERTIFIED.
DIRECT CERTIFIED IS A GOVERNMENT ASSISTED PROGRAM, SO FAMILIES IN NEED CAN APPLY FOR HELP.
THEY CAN BE CERTIFIED AS A SNAP OR TANF PARTICIPANT.
THOSE SNAP AND TANF PARTICIPANTS ARE FAMILIES.
THEY ARE APPROVED FOR EITHER FREE OR REDUCED, IF THEY -- PEOPLE HAVE GONE AND GOTTEN ASSISTANCE AND ARE ON MEDICAID -- OR, I'M SORRY.
MEDICAID. SORRY, I GET MEDICAID AND MEDICARE -- IF THEY ARE RECEIVING MEDICAID, IT DOES NOT NECESSARILY QUALIFY THEM FOR FREE OR REDUCED, OR IF THEY ARE GETTING -- HEALTH CARE, THAT DOES NOT QUALIFY THEM FOR FREE AND REDUCED.
AND THEN, THE FREE AND REDUCED PORTION OF IT IS, THE FAMILY ACTUALLY APPLYING FOR FREE AND REDUCED WITH AN APPLICATION, EITHER PAPER APPLICATION, OR ONLINE.
THOSE ARE BY INCOME AND HOUSEHOLDS NUMBERS.
AND THAT IS HOW -- THE GUIDELINES OF INCOME ELIGIBILITY. FOR BOTH OF THOSE, IF YOU ARE PULLING OUT OF FREE OR REDUCED, OR DIRECT CERTIFIED, YOU HAVE TO REAPPLY EVERY YEAR. IT DOES NOT CARRY OVER A YEAR ON YEAR. AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR, IT GETS A LITTLE COMPLICATED. BECAUSE THE GOVERNMENT SAYS, OKAY, WE ARE GOING TO GIVE THEM A 30-DAY ROLLOVER.
SO THIS PAST YEAR, SEPTEMBER 15TH, WAS THE ROLLOVER DATE.
THEY ROLL BACK TO PAY IF THEY WERE ON A FREE AND REDUCED PART OF THAT. AND IF THEY ARE NOTIFIED THEY HAVE TO REAPPLY. THEN, THEY DON'T KEEP RECEIVING THE BENEFITS. AND A LITTLE BIT HOW WE DO OUR MENUS. WHEN WE ARE CREATING OUR MENUS, WE HAVE TO -- CALORIES FOR THE DIFFERENT GRADE LEVELS. IT'S NOT ONLY BY DAY BUT IT'S ALSO BY WEEK. THE SAME GOES FOR IT VEGETABLE SUBGROUPS. DARK GREEN LEAFY VEGETABLES.
WE HAVE TO OFFER ORANGE SO MANY TIMES.
WE HAVE TO OFFER LEUNG'S, STARCHES.
JUST TO GIVE YOU AN EXAMPLE, GREEN BEANS, MOST POPULAR VEGETABLE IS NOT A GREEN VEGETABLE.
IT IS CONSIDERED A OTHER. IT DOES NOT EVEN QUALIFY TO MEET OUR REQUIREMENTS. SODIUM RESTRICTIONS, ADDED SUGARS AND WE ARE WAITING ON SOME CHANGES -- AND IT SEEMS -- TURMOIL BECAUSE WE HAVE TO GO AND THE SAD PART IS AS WE ARE TRYING TO FOLLOW ALL THOSE RESTRICTIONS, NOT EVERYONE HAS CAUGHT UP.
THE MANUFACTURERS -- SOME HAVE WORK TOWARD THAT.
SOME HAVE NOT. IT WILL BE INTERESTING -- THEN, OF COURSE, WHOLE GRAIN REQUIREMENTS, WE HAVE TO OFFER 51% WHOLE GRAINS. OUR SMART STATE GUIDELINES -- SO, ANY PRODUCT THAT WE HAS TO GO THROUGH A SMART SNAP CALCULATOR. WHICH IS IN THEIR REALM.
IT COULD BE DRINKS OR COOKIES. AND IT'S REALLY FOLLOWING THE SAME GUIDELINES. WHOLE GRAIN --
[01:20:02]
SUGARS, THAT KIND OF THING. IT ALSO APPLIES TO PRODUCTS SERVED IN OUR SCHOOLS, OUTSIDE OF OUR FOOD SERVICE.SO, VENDING MACHINES, IF THERE'S -- SMART SNACK APPROVED -- ANY KIND OF PARTIES -- AND WILL YOU ORDER ME SOME POPSICLES TO GO TO MY CLASS, WE CAN'T DO THAT. WE HAVE TO FOLLOW RULES.
IT HAS TO BE SMART SNACK COMPLIANT.
>> IF I WANTED TO HAVE GREEN BEANS FOR MY SMART SNACK, DOES
>> JUST CHECKING. >> SO, WHAT IS A GREEN VEGETABLE, IF GREEN BEANS AREN'T A GREEN VEGETABLE?
KALE IS. >> GOOD LUCK WITH THAT.
>> ROMAINE LETTUCE IS. ICEBERG IS NOT.
WE CAN GET INTO THE GREENS. IT'S TOUGH TO BE ABLE TO OFFER AND GET THE VARIETY OUT THERE THAT THE KIDS WILL ACTUALLY
>> WE STARTED A MENU IN AUGUST. WE REVIEWED OUR MENU AND MADE SOME MENU CHANGES AND -- JUST A LITTLE LOOK -- WE REALLY LOOK AT THE NUMBER. SEE THE KIDS LIKE IT? DO THEY NOT? AND WE GO THROUGH -- OUR EMPLOYEES, OUR COOKS, OUR MANAGERS.
I FEEL VERY LUCKY AND APPRECIATE DR. STOKES INVITING ME AND -- WE HIT A LOT OF SCHOOLS AND HEARD A LOT OF THINGS THAT HAVE BEEN REAL HELPFUL IN TRYING TO GUIDE, TO LISTEN TO THEIR VOICE, WHAT IS IT THAT THEY WANT TO -- AND WHAT DO YOU EAT OR WHAT DON'T YOU? EAT -- AND THEY'RE NOT GOING TO.
RIGHT? BUT IF THERE IS SOMETHING I CAN DO THAT CAN MAKE THEM SAY, YES, I WOULD LOVE THAT, I WOULD LOVE TO HAVE THAT CHOICE. SO, IT'S BEEN VERY HELPFUL, AS WE HAVE GUIDED OUR WAY THROUGH THE SNACK MENU.
SO, WHEN WE STARTED OUR MENU FOR AUGUST, WE STARTED BACK IN MARCH. WELL, ACTUALLY IN FEBRUARY.
BECAUSE, JUST TO GET FEEDBACK, WHEN WE ARE SELECTING OUR COMMODITIES, THAT ALL PLAYS IN PART AND HAVE TO DESIGNATE MONIES TO WHAT WE ARE GOING TO DO.
WE DID SOME TASTE TESTING AT THE SPRING, WHICH WAS AWESOME.
AND THAT HAS HELPED. WE TAKE OUR RECIPES AND WE HOPE THAT OUR COOKS WILL BE ABLE TO TAKE A LOOK AT IT AND TAKE SOMETHING THAT, ESPECIALLY IF IT'S A NEW RECIPE, AND WE ARE CREATING, IT HAS TO BE MADE, SO EVERYONE CAN MAKE, IT SO IT'S THE SAME ACROSS THE BOARD. AGAIN, WHEN WE FINALIZE THE MENU, WE GET AN INPUT FROM ALL OUR TEAMS. AND WE GET TO THAT POINT WHERE WE HAVE TO SELECT OUR COMMODITIES. WE HAVE DIFFERENT AVENUES FOR COMMODITIES. SO, WE CAN DO PROCESS COMMODITIES OR PASS THROUGH. SO, WE WORK THROUGH AND WE SELECT -- I WILL JUST USE CHICKEN.
I USE CHICKEN A LOT BECAUSE IT'S POPULAR.
THE WHITE AND THE DARK MEAT. AND WE SAY, OKAY -- 20,000 POUNDS TO GO TO THAT. AND THIS HAS THE PROCESS, WHICH IS TYSON. AND TYSON HAS THE PRODUCTS THAT WE CAN USE THAT HAS THE DIVERSION THAT WE CAN DIVERT IT TO. TWO PROGRAMS THAT WE HAVE TRIED THIS YEAR, AND WILL CARRY OVER TO NEXT YEAR, IS BROWN BACKS THAT, WHICH IS ANOTHER GOVERNMENT AGENCY.
BROWNBACKS IS PURELY FROZEN OR ITS CANNED PRODUCTS.
WE LOOK AT THE NUMBERS TO DECIDE REALLY WHAT IS THE BEST BANG FOR YOUR BUCK. AND I FOUND WITH BROWNBACKS, YOU GET A BETTER DEAL, INSTEAD OF USING PROCESS OR A GLOBAL VENDOR, FOODS AND VEGETABLES -- SO WE PRE-SELECT AND HAVE TO'S DECIDE WHO GETS WHAT AND THAT KIND OF THING.
THEN THE LAST THING, WE GOT OUR FIRST BROWNBACKS THREE OF OUR SCHOOLS YESTERDAY, WE GET THEM THROUGH AND OF COURSE -- SUMMER PROGRAM. AND THEN FAVORS, ANOTHER PROGRAM THAT WE STARTED, I GOT ALL THE PAPERWORK THROUGH IT AND GOT APPROVAL. AND STATE REACHED OUT TO ME AND SAID, WOULD YOU LIKE TO GIVE IT TO TRY THIS YEAR? SO, I SELECTED BOTH OF OUR HIGH SCHOOLS -- JUST OBVIOUSLY. AND IN THE FAVORS PROGRAM IS FRESH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES. AND IT COMES FROM A DIFFERENT VENDOR OUT OF -- I DON'T KNOW, SOMEWHERE IN PORTLAND. AND THE PRODUCTS FIRST GOT DELIVERED TO RIGHT AFTER SPRING BREAK.
AND THERE'S TONS OF CHOICES. I SEND THEM THE CHECKLIST, WHAT THE -- THE TWO HIGH SCHOOLS.
AND THEY HAVE GIVEN US -- I DON'T REMEMBER HOW MUCH
[01:25:01]
MONEY. BUT THEY GAVE US A X AMOUNT OF MONEY. I -- REACHED OUT AND SAID, HEY, IT'S GREAT.IT'S FRESH. THE KIDS ARE LIKING IT.
THEY ARE TRYING DIFFERENT THINGS.
AND SO THEN, THEY GAVE ME MORE TO GET THROUGH THE REST OF THE YEAR. BUT WE WILL BE DOING THAT NEXT SEMESTER, AND NEXT YEAR AS WELL.
BUT JUST AT THE HIGH SCHOOLS. BUT IT'S AT LEAST OFFERING MORE FRESH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES AND LETTING CHILDREN TRY THINGS.
AND THEN WE HAVE TO, TAKE INTO ACCOUNT SOME FOOD ACCOMMODATIONS, HOW WE ARE GOING TO REACH THOSE STUDENTS THAT ARE PROBABLY JUST DIETARY NEEDS, VEGETARIANS, WHATEVER IT IS. AND SO WE ARE TRYING TO ADDRESS THAT AS WE GO FORWARD. WE DID INTRODUCE A NEW PRODUCT, WHICH HAS BEEN VERY WELL ACCEPTED AND WE DO HAVE OUR PRODUCTS. WE DID THE IMPOSSIBLE BURGER.
AND THEY DO HAVE OTHER PRODUCTS LIKE THE GROUND MEAT OR CHICKEN NUGGETS, SOMETHING LIKE THAT. SO, SOME OF THE CHANGES THAT WE HAVE DONE THIS YEAR, FROM OUR CONVERSATIONS WITH THE STUDENTS, FOUND THAT THEY ARE -- A LOT OF TIMES YOU ARE RUNNING OUT OF FOOD. AND THEY SAY WE ARE RUNNING OUT OF FOOD. ARE YOU RUNNING OUT OF EVERYTHING? ARE RUNNING OUT OF CHICKEN SANDWICHES? A LOT OF TIMES IT'S THE CHICKEN SANDWICHES. WE STARTED THE YEAR OUT DOING PRETTY MUCH WHAT WE DID THROUGH COVID, WE'RE ALL THE LINES WERE ALL THE SAME. KEEP IN MIND, WE HAVE A SHORTAGE.
WE DO NOT HAVE ALL OF OUR LINES OPEN AT THE HIGH SCHOOLS BECAUSE WE CAN'T MAN THEM. SO, WE THOUGHT THAT MIGHT BE A WAY TO GET GOING AND BE ABLE TO FEED EVERYONE.
BUT IT HAS ITS NEGATIVES AS WELL.
SO, IN THE LAST MONTH, THEY HAVE CHANGED TO BEING MORE STATIONS. SO, IT'S A PIECE OF PIZZA STATION. IT'S A CHICKEN STATION.
IT'S A SALAD STATION OR COLD ITEMS, HOPING THAT THAT -- WE ARE OUT OF CHICKEN PANTIES. BUT WE ARE ON ANOTHER LINE.
AND THE KIDS THAT WANT TO STAND THROUGH ALL THOSE LINES.
RIGHT? AND IT'S VERY HARD TO MANAGE IN THE BACK OF THE HOUSE. BECAUSE YOU ARE FINDING OUT, YOU ARE OUT OF THIS. AND YOU ARE RUNNING AROUND AND SOMEBODY HAS GOT TO MOVE ALL THAT FROM ONE TO THE OTHER.
SO, BY KIND OF ZONING IN ALLOWING THEM TO SERVE FROM ONE OR TWO STATIONS, IT'S EASIER TO MANAGE AND SAY, HEY, ENOUGH -- OR WHATEVER. WE HAVE I DID FLAVOR STATIONS AT THE HIGH SCHOOLS, NOT SALT, OF COURSE.
THE STUDENTS CAN THEN ADD DIFFERENT SEASONINGS IF THEY THINK IT IS TOO BLAND. THERE IS SOMETHING THAT WE CAN ADD, SOMETHING THAT WE CAN'T. AND SO ALLOWING THEM A LITTLE BIT TO MAKE IT THEIR OWN. THEY ARE HAPPIER WITH THE PRODUCT. WE DID SOME SAMPLING WITH COLD BREW THIS YEAR, TRYING TO OFFSET THE COFFEE SHOP AND EVERYONE WANTS THEM OPEN AT THE HIGH SCHOOLS.
AND AND WE STARTED AN ANGEL FUND.
AND THIS DOES NOT TAKE THE PLACE OF -- DONATIONS AND I FOUND THROUGH THE YEAR.
WE'VE HAD PEOPLE -- TO ONE SPECIFIC SCHOOL WHERE MY CHILDREN ARE. THEY CAN DONATE AND WE WILL TAKE THOSE FUNDS AND DISTRIBUTE THEM, BECAUSE IT HAS TO BE A SEPARATE -- DOING ANYTHING LIKE THAT.
THERE'S TECHNICALLY A FOOD SERVICE DEPARTMENT THAT CANNOT PAY ANY NEGATIVE -- SO, THE ONLY WAY WE CAN DO THAT IS THROUGH DONATIONS, THROUGH THE FOUNDATION, AND EVERY YEAR THEY HAVE GIVEN US SOME DONATIONS, TO TRY TO PERHAPS, SEVERAL OF THE STUDENTS, LIKE SENIOR GRADUATES, RIGHT, AND THE -- THERE IS SOME MONEY LEFT OVER.
THEY WANTED TO DONATE THOSE FUNDS INSTEAD OF THE 20 CENTS OR THE $3, WHATEVER, THEY CAN DONATED INTO THAT.
AND THEN THEY TAKE THOSE FUNDS. WE DID ANOTHER DISTRICT AND AND AND IT WAS NICE TO HAVE AND THE FAMILY -- HAD TO MOVE OUT OF THEIR HOUSE FOR -- AND IT WAS SOMETHING TO OFFER THOSE FAMILY, THOSE NEEDS, TO PAY FOR THEIR LUNCHES. -- THAT WE COULD HELP HIM FOR A MONTH OR TWO UNTIL THINGS GOT BETTER. IT IS NICE TO HAVE THAT AS WELL. AND WE ARE TRYING TO, IF WE GET SOME DONATIONS, BE ABLE TO PAY OFF SOME OF THAT DEBT -- CHANGING THE LINES, I JUST TALKED ABOUT THE SERVICE, AS WE MAKE A LITTLE MORE SELF-SERVICE FOR OUR OLDER STUDENTS.
IT HELPS WITH OUR LABOR SHORTAGE.
IT'S NOT AS MUCH CUPPING AND SO MUCH PREPWORK THAT WE CAN JUST
[01:30:01]
PUT THESE THINGS OUT THERE AND THE STUDENTS HELP THEMSELVES.AND AS YOU CAN SEE, THE PICTURE, A LOT OF THAT THEY CAN HELP THEMSELVES. AND WE FOUND THAT IN A COUPLE SCHOOLS -- AND I FOUND THAT THEY WOULD HAVE THE SIDE SALADS AND THEY WOULD MAKE THESE BEAUTIFUL PANS OF SALAD WITH THE SAME INGREDIENTS -- AND IT JUST LOOKED GREAT. AND THEY WENT THROUGH -- AND IT LOOKS BETTER, IT'S PRETTY, AND IT LOOKS BETTER IN A CUP WITH A LID -- TRYING TO MANAGE THE MIDDLE OF THE PAGE -- SOME OF OUR SERVICE STANDARDS, WHICH PEOPLE ALWAYS FEEL LIKE, WE ARE GOING TO CALL OUT A STUDENT, IF THEY ARE -- OR IN THE NEGATIVE.
WE DO NOT DENY A CHILD A MEAL. WE WILL ALWAYS FEED A CHILD A MEAL IF IT IS A FULL -- AND WE DON'T SHAME AND IN THE PAST MANY YEARS AGO AND THEY -- DID NOT HAVE ENOUGH MONEY.
NO, SORRY. DUMP IT IN THE TRASH IN FRONT OF THEM AND THERE YOU GO GO, GET YOUR PEANUT BUTTER AND JELLY. AND OUR REGISTERS DO NOT HEAD OF ANY INFORMATION ON THOSE REGISTERS THAT DOESN'T ACE THOSE FREE AND REDUCE. IT DOES NOT MATTER.
SO, NOBODY SEES THAT AND LET'S SAY THEY ARE IN THE NEGATIVE.
LET'S SAY THEY HAVE THEIR CHICKEN SANDWICH AND THEY HAVE THEIR GATORADE AND THEY HAVE THEIR MEAL, WHETHER THEY ARE FREE OR REDUCED. AND THEY'RE IN THE NEGATIVE.
IT DOES NOT MATTER. -- CAN'T BUY THAT GATORADE TODAY. AND IF YOU HAVE AND IF -- THE SAME WAY AND WE -- WE TALKED A LITTLE BIT ABOUT -- THE FREE -- FREE AND REDUCED AND DIRECT CERTIFIED -- FOR FREE AND REDUCED APPLICATIONS, EITHER PAPER OR OLINE, THOSE CAN ONLY BE APPROVED, THE DAY THAT THEY ARE RECEIVED IN OUR OFFICE.
SO, TODAY, THIS IS THE TENTH. GET AN APPLICATION IN TODAY.
FAMILY IS IN THE NEGATIVE, LET'S SAY, $400.
A COUPLE HAVE NOT PAID ALL YEAR LONG.
I CAN ONLY APPROVE THAT APPLICATION UNTIL THIS DAY.
I CAN'T GO BACK. I CAN'T RETRO IT -- FOR DIRECT SEARCHED Ć CERT -- I GO ON THEIR WEBSITE, I DO AROUND DOWNLOAD THEIR DIRECT CERTS, I GO BACK TO THEIR SYSTEM, AND I WOULD GO BACK TO APRIL.
AND I GO BACK TO APRIL I AND 1 I CAN APPROVE THAT AND THE SAME. YOU CAN'T GO BACK ALL THE WAY TO THE BEGINNING OF THE SCHOOL YEAR.
IF THERE'S A HOUSEHOLD ONE, ONE OR TWO OF THE CHILDREN ARE APPROVED FOR FREE AND REDUCED, WE CAN EXTEND THAT TO ANYONE IN THE HOUSEHOLD, WHETHER THEY ARE APPROVED OR NOT.
BUT IF THEY ARE LIVING IN THE SAME HOUSEHOLD, THEY CAN.
THE ONLY EXCEPTION -- ONE OF THE EXCEPTIONS WOULD BE FOSTER CARE. THEIR BENEFITS DO NOT -- KNOW WHAT ELSE CAN USE THEM. IT'S JUST FOR THEM.
>> AND JUST A LITTLE BIT OF FUN FACTS ABOUT WHAT WE DO, WHAT WE SERVE, HOW MUCH PRODUCE WE USE, OUR STAFFING, FOOD DELIVERIES.
CATERING SERVICES -- I JUST FEEL LIKE OUR CATERING
SERVICES IS THE HIDDEN GEM. >> THEY ARE AWESOME AND THEY LOVE WHAT THEY DO AND SOME OF OUR CHALLENGES IS OUR STAFFING.
CURRENTLY -- -- WE HAVE -- MORE -- THE HIGH SCHOOLS. AND SOME ARE OPEN AND AND WE START IN. AFTER WE KEPT GETTING ASKED
[01:35:04]
ABOUT THE COFFEE SHOP. AND CAN WE HAVE STUDENTS DO THE COFFEE SHOP? NO.TO YOUR POINT, WE HAVE TO HAVE A FOOD SERVICE PERSON WORKING IN THE COFFEE SHOP. BECAUSE STUDENTS CAN'T RUN THE POS EASTHAM. EVEN THOUGH OUR PEOPLE -- THEY KNOW WHAT IS ON THE SCREEN.
AND IT'S PRIVACY THAT THEY CAN SEE OTHER PEOPLES ACCOUNTS.
SO, WE CAN -- AND SO WE DECIDED -- BEFORE AND AFTER -- LET ME START SLOW.
LET'S SEE IF WE CAN GET THIS UP AND GOING.
HIGHER STUDENTS TO WORK THE MORNING SHIFT, TO WORK THE MORNING SHIFT, TO WORK THE AFTER SCHOOL SHIFT.
ON MONDAY, THEY EITHER CREATED A QR CODE OR HIGH SCHOOLS TO MAKE UP THE POSTERS, THE AWESOME POSTERS, WORKING IN A -- THERE AND EVA TOLD ME WE HAVE AND IT WAS 50/50 BETWEEN THE TWO HIGH SCHOOLS.
>> WHAT WAS THAT REQUEST? 130 --
>> 135? >> PEOPLE INTERESTED WORKING IN IT -- WE ARE GOING TO KEEP GATHERING AND AND WE ARE GOING TO START REACHING OUT AND -- THAT KIND OF WORK. MY GOAL IS WE ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO OPEN. JASON WANTED TO BE OPEN FOR THEIR OPEN HOUSE. SO PEOPLE CAN -- WORKING WITH FACILITIES TO GET ALL THE EQUIPMENT.
SO, IT'S BEEN YEARS SINCE WE HAVE OPENED THE COFFEE SHOP.
WE HAVE NOT HAD THE STAFF AND THEN COVID.
SO, WE ARE EXCITED ABOUT THAT. >> -- IN TERMS THAT ARE WORKING IN THE CAFETERIA AND -- WE AND CURRENTLY IT -- AND IN TURN WORKING WITH ME AND WE -- AGENCY SCHOOLS AND --
>> THAT -- WE CAN HAVE 2 TO 5 INTERNS WORKING AND RESTRICTION HAVING SOMEONE 17 OR 18 -- THERE IS NO RESTRICTIONS. I HAVE TO BE AT LEAST -- POSSIBLE FOR -- INTERNS.
I WOULD BE WILLING TO LOOK INTO IT.
I DON'T KNOW IF WE -- WE HAVE HAD SOME STUDENTS WORK
-- >> I KNOW THAT YOU HAD SAID EARLIER THAT WE HAVE HAD OPEN POSITIONS.
THAT COULD HELP ALLEVIATE SOME. >> IT COULD BUT WHAT WE DO FIND IS -- THE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS AND -- AND THEY DON'T WANT TO BE -- -- WORKING THE ELEMENTARY, JUNIOR HIGH.
>>, I LOVE THE IDEA. >> THANK YOU.
>> SOME OF THE OTHER CHALLENGES'S SUPPLY CHAIN ISSUES. IT'S GOTTEN BETTER THROUGH COVID BUT IT'S STILL NOT THERE YET.
TRYING TO SATISFY ALL OF THE REQUESTS THAT WE RECEIVE, FOR A VARIETY OF THINGS. AND THEN THE COST OF FOOD AND PAPER. SOME OF OUR GOALS ARE AND OUR SUMMER FEEDING PROGRAM, WHICH I WILL COVER THAT ON THE NEXT SLIDE. WE HAVE A NEW PROGRAM THAT WE ARE USING TO ENTER ALL OF OUR RECIPES AND MENUS.
THAT WE HAVE BEGUN DOING -- IT WILL THEN MOVE TO BEFORE WHAT WE WERE DOING MANUALLY. SO, THIS PROGRAM WILL TAKE ALL OF THE MENUS AND THE ITEMS AND THE INGREDIENTS.
BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO KEEP LOADING EVERYTHING TO BUILD YOUR PROGRAM. AND ONCE YOU PUT IN YOUR MENU IT SHOULD READ IF YOU ARE COMPLIANT BY CALORIES, OR BY YOUR -- AND -- IT WILL ALSO BE MORE LIVE BECAUSE -- FOR THEIR STUDENTS AND PEOPLE CAN DOWNLOAD ONTO THEIR APPS.
[01:40:02]
AND HAVE THAT INFORMATION SO THAT THE KIDS ARE GOING THROUGH THE LINE, AND THEY CAN SEE WHAT MIGHT BE ANALOGY OR -- WE DID NEW AND IMPROVED PRODUCTS, CHINESE BETTER PRODUCTS. SO, WE ARE BRINGING IN, INSTEAD OF THE CHOPPED -- WE ARE GOING TO BE USING A WHOLE MUSCLE CHICKEN BODY, WHICH IS REALLY A CHICK-FIL-A SANDWICH. SO, OUR MENU -- SCHOOLS AND OF COURSE THEY LOVED IT.AND THE PLAN ON TRYING TO OFFER MORE FRESH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES -- IMPROVE OUR TRAINING PROGRAM, AND WE ARE -- TEN OF OUR MANAGERS TO THE CULINARY TRAINING FOR SCHOOLS. I ATTENDED IT ABOUT SEVEN YEARS AGO. IT WAS AN AWESOME PROGRAM, AND WE LEARNED A LOT. I THINK WE CAN ALWAYS LEARN, IT HELPS YOU GO THROUGH AND DO MORE SCRATCH COOKING, WHICH IS WHAT WE WOULD LOVE TO GET INTO. AND THEN WHEN THEY TOLD ME I COULD ONLY HAVE TEN, I SAID, COULD I HOST? BECAUSE THEN I CAN HAVE THE REST OF MY PEOPLE IN SOME OF MY -- AND SO WE ARE GOING TO BE SCHEDULING TO HOST THAT CLASS HERE NEXT YEAR.
AND THE GOAL IS TO PROVIDE MORE EDUCATION TO OUR STUDENTS THAT MIGHT BE AND CARRY OVER INTO THE CLASSROOM AND WE ARE STARTING A WORLD FLAVORS ROTATION, WHICH WE WILL FEATURE A DIFFERENT CUISINE, FROM A DIFFERENT, REGION EVERY MONTH.
SO, AN ENTRĆE, A SIDE, -- WE WILL ALSO HAVE A PIECE OF THE EDUCATIONAL INFORMATION TRYING TO BE INCLUSIVE, HAVING EVERYONE LEARN ABOUT DIFFERENT CULTURES AND FOODS THAT THEY EAT. SO, I'M EXCITED ABOUT THAT.
THE EXHIBITION COOKING PEACE WILL BE A VERY FUN PIECE FOR THE STUDENTS, AS SOMEONE MIGHT BE OUT THERE COOKING AND SAMPLING THINGS AND TRYING THINGS.
WE WOULD LOVE TO HAVE VISITING CHEFS FROM OUR COMMUNITY.
AND DO SOME EXHIBITION COOKING OR TALKING OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT. AND THEN REALLY, IF WE COULD -- MY GOAL WOULD BE THAT WE COULD BE MORE INVOLVED IN THE CLASSROOM. -- HEALTH FAIRS, THAT TYPE OF THING.
WE'VE DONE THAT, OR IN THEIR ENRICHMENT CLASS, AFTER SCHOOL, WE WOULD HOST A CHEF CLASS. GETTING A LITTLE -- APRONS, AND THEY ARE AND THEY ARE TAUGHT SOMETHING DIFFERENT EVERY TIME, LIKE BASICS, THEY LEARN HOW TO MAKE A BASIC SAUCE, AND THEN THEY KIND OF GO FROM THERE.
AND THEN THEY GET A COOKBOOK TO TAKE HOME.
AND THEN THIS IS OUR SUMMER FLYER.
SO, FREE SUMMER, FREE MEALS FOR STUDENTS.
WE WILL START TO JUNE THE 5TH AND GO THROUGH JULY 21ST.
WE WILL BE SERVING LUNCH FROM 11 TO 1.
WE WILL BE AT FISSURES JIM JUNIOR HIGH -- THIS IS AVAILABLE FOR ANYONE THAT IS 18 YEARS OR UNDER.
IT DOESN'T MATTER. I REALLY DID IT NOW.
>> REPEAT WHAT HE SAID ABOUT THE AGE?
>> 18 YEARS AND YOUNGER. IT DOESN'T MATTER.
IT WILL BE SENDING OUT SOME REQUESTS FOR VOLUNTEERS.
>> SO, WHEN YOU SAY IT DOESN'T MATTER, THEY DON'T HAVE TO BE ONE OF OUR STUDENTS? WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY IT DOESN'T
MATTER? >> IF THEY ARE 18 YEARS OR YOUNGER, WE DO NOT TAKE NAMES, WE DON'T TAKE ADDRESSES, WE DON'T TAKE AGES. IF WE THINK THAT THEY ARE 25 YEARS OLD, WE ARE GOING TO QUESTION THEM.
PARENTS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME. WE WANT THE PARENTS TO COME.
BUT THEY CAN'T SIT AND EAT OFF OF THE PLATES OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT. AND IT'S THAT YOU HAVE TO EAT YOUR MEAL WHILE YOU ARE THERE. IT'S NOT LIKE YOU USED TO BE DURING COVID, WHERE THEY COULD PICK IT UP AND GO.
>> I JUST WANT TO ADD THAT THIS SUMMER MEALS PROGRAM, I THINK HE SAID THT THEY WILL BE ASKING FOR SOME VOLUNTEERS.
WE'VE GOT THAT INFORMATION TO, AND I THINK THE COMMUNICATIONS DEPARTMENT HAS SENT THAT OUT AND IT'S ON THE SOCIAL MEDIA PAGES AND I'VE -- THAT'S DIFFERENT?
>> NEVER MIND THAT. >> WE HAVE SOME OUT ALREADY.
>> -- >> SO OUR VOLUNTEERS, WE ARE GOING TO HAVE A SIGN UP. I'M KIND OF STRUGGLING SO I'M GOING TO -- WAITING FOR TECHNOLOGY AND -- -- WANT TO JUNE 5TH.
[01:45:02]
AND I'M GOING TO DO CRAFT WITH THE KIDS.THAT IS THE BEST. IF THERE'S AN ACTIVITY FOR THE KIDS TO BE INVOLVED WITH, IT'S HELPS.
WE'VE HAD A TRAVELING LIBRARY. WE'VE HAD THE FIRE DEPARTMENT COME. THEY CAN HOLD THE HOSE AND THEY CAN RUN FOR THE WATER. THAT KIND OF STUFF.
IF THE HIGH SCHOOL GROUP HAS STUDENTS THAT WANT TO COME PLAY FOR TWO HOURS, ANYTHING THAT WE COULD DRAW.
I'VE REACHED OUT TO CITY OF -- CUMBERLAND.
INVITING THEM TO LUNCH, OR SEE IF THEY COULD WORK IT INTO THEIR PROGRAM. AND SO THEY COULD SAY THAT THEY ARE TRYING TO DO A COUPLE DAYS A WEEK.
AND PROBABLY 30 OR 40 KIDS. THAT'S MY LAST SLIDE.
I CAN'T CHANGE IT BECAUSE I MESS THIS UP.
>> I JUST HAD A COUPLE QUICK QUESTIONS.
THANK YOU SO MUCH. THE PRESENTATION WAS GREAT.
DO YOU HAVE -- AND I DON'T MEAN TO PUT YOU ON THE SPOT? BUT IF YOU HAVE -- -- WE DO USE LUNCH?
>> -- SO OUR NUMBERS ARE SOMEWHERE AND I DON'T HAVE NUMBERS I HAVE PERCENTAGES.
HE AND THE OUTSTANDING -- TOTAL NUMBER FOR SCHOOL PROGRAM -- OUTSTANDING BALANCE --
IN AGGREGATE. >> I CAN SHARE THAT NUMBER? I PULLED IT YESTERDAY OR THE DAY BEFORE IT WAS $116,000.
AND >> JUST PIGGYBACKING OFF OF SUZANNE'S COMMENT AND I WAS THINKING ON THE SAME ASPECT THAT WAS NOT ENTIRELY PAYMENT, IS THERE A WAY THAT WE CAN DO COURSE CREDITS OR ELECTED CREDITS WITH A CHILD OR SOMEBODY HAVING AN INTEREST IN A NUTRITIONAL PATH TO MAYBE PLUG THAT IN AT SOME POINT.
I DON'T KNOW IF IT'S -- OR NOT.
>> THAT WOULD BE SOMETHING THAT CAN REALLY GO THROUGH -- IT'S NOT SOMETHING THAT WOULD BE DRIVEN --
>> AWESOME. >> I THINK WE'VE HAD STUDENTS FROM THE ACADEMY AND WE'VE HAD -- WHAT'S IT CALLED? A SNAPSHOT OF SUCCESS LAST
YEAR. >> I HAVE SPOKEN WITH THEM -- I AND I HAD ONE YOUNG LADY, SHE WAS JUST TOO --
>> I JUST WANTED TO SAY THANK YOU FOR YOU AND YOUR STAFF -- AND WE ARE QUITE LITERALLY FEEDING AN ARMY EVERY DAY.
IT'S AN -- ALL THE SCENES AND STATE AND FEDERAL EDUCATION EVERYBODY.
THE COMMUNITY APPRECIATE IT. IF EVERYBODY LISTENING, OR WHATEVER, THERE'S VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES.
I'D ENCOURAGE EVERYBODY TO HELP OUT WHERE THEY COME.
>> THANK YOU. >> AND THANK YOU FOR ESTABLISHING, ANGEL FUND IT'S REALLY GREAT.
>> THANK YOU VERY MUCH. APPRECIATE IT.
MOVING TO ADAM PINE FOR ZERO, YMCA CONTRACT EXTENSION.
>> I'M TELLING YOU, THIS IS FOR INFORMATION, OBVIOUSLY, THIS EVENING WILL COME BACK TO JUNE 14TH MEETING FOR FINAL APPROVAL, THIS IS A FIVE-YEAR EXTENSION. BETWEEN THE SCHOOL CORPORATION, AS WELL AS, -- THIS AGREEMENT IS PRETTY IDENTICAL TO OUR LAST AGREEMENT THAT WE HAVE WITH THEM.
ANY CHANGES THERE'S A REDUCTION IN REVENUE FOR ROUGHLY $400,000 ANNUALLY THAT WOULD PROVIDE TO US 250 THAT IS BASED ON THE FACT THAT IT IS BASED ON HALF WHAT THEY WERE WHEN THE LAST AGREEMENT WAS SIGNED WE ASKED FOR SOME PREPARED OF DATA, DR.
[01:50:02]
STOKES DID, ABOUT WHAT THEIR RATES WERE WITH THE OTHER AREA DISTRICTS, WITH $175 IS WHERE THE REVENUE SIDE IS WHERE IT CAME FROM AS YOU CAN, SEE IT'S STAGGERED IN TERMS OF IF THERE ARE ADDITIONAL STUDENTS AND THERE'S ADDITIONAL REVENUE.WE'RE WAITING TO CLARIFY A COUNT DATE IF YOU WILL THAT WE ALL AGREED TO MUTUALLY THAT'S IDENTIFIED IN THE AGREEMENT.
AND ALSO MAINTAINS THE $96,000 THE Y PROVIDES TO OUR K THROUGH SIX BUILDINGS. THAT HAVE CHILDCARE IN THE.
BUT THOSE ARE FUNDED SPECIFICALLY TO THEM, THAT ARE ABLE TO BE USED AS THE PRINCIPLES DISCRETION IT KEEPS THAT IN PLACE WITH OUR OVERALL REVENUE.
>> I CAN ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS. >> DOES THAT MEAN THAT THAT PRODUCTION IS OF THE KID TO USE THE SERVICE THE NUMBER OF THE LATCHKEY KIDS'S BEEN CUT IN HALF?
>> LESS THAN HALF. WE WERE OVER 2000, AND UNDER 1000 NOW. IS IT STILL REVENUE DOUBT PER STUDENT? YOU'RE SAYING WE'RE TRYING TO
AGREE TO A, A TRUE UPDATE, -- >> WE'VE BEEN GETTING THE 400,000 FOR LESS THAN HALF THE STUDENTS FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS.
IF YOU REMEMBER THE IMPROVEMENT ADDENDUM FOR THAT SECOND PAYMENT, TO ADJUST THAT. SO, YES, BUT IF WE LEFT IT WHERE IT WAS, THAT NUMBER IS MORE LIKE $400.
PURSUED IN, WHICH YOU KNOW, DOESN'T ALSO, THIS IS A PARTNERSHIP. IT'S NOT A MONEYMAKING VENTURE.
SO, FOR THEM TO BE ABLE TO INVEST IN THEIR STAFF, AND BE ABLE TO STILL PROFIT, WE WANT TO EXPAND IT.
THE GOAL, WE DON'T WANT WAITING LISTS OF ANYTHING OF THAT NATURE, THIS IS A PART OF THAT. THE OTHER THING I WOULD TELL YOU, IT'S A FIVE YEAR AGREEMENT, THERE'S A LANGUAGE THAT ALLOWS THIS TO TERMINATE AT THE END OF A SCHOOL YEAR.
IF THERE WERE ISSUES, WE'D BE ABLE TO UTILIZE THAT.
>> SO, IT IS STILL BASED ON A RATE PER CHILD?
>> THAT IS WHERE THE NUMBER COMES FROM.
>> ONLY WHAT WE AGREED TO AS A FRONT AMOUNT, IT'S GOING TO BE AUDITED OR MADE CREW? AT THE END OF THAT PERIOD? MY CONCERN, I GUESS WHAT I'M GETTING AT IS, WE'RE DOWN RIGHT NOW, WHAT IF WE GO BACK UP? WE CAME OUT WELL IN THE LAST ONE, IF IT GOES THE OTHER WAY, WE'D LOSE?
>> IF YOU LOOK AT THE PAY SCHEDULE IN THERE, THERE IS A PROVISION, IT ISN'T LITERALLY DOLLAR FOR DOLLAR, STUDENT FOR STUDENT, WHEN YOU GO UP BY A CERTAIN NUMBER, AND I WANT TO SAY THAT NUMBER IS 500. I THINK YOU CAN SEE IT INCREASE OF AROUND 50, 000, AND THEN THERE'S A TOP AMOUNT.
THAT WOULD BE, OBVIOUSLY, OUR IDEAL IS THAT WE HAD AS MANY KIDS AS THEY BUILT IN, WE DON'T HAVE ANY WAITING LIST.
IT'S ALL BLUE SKIES AND SUNSHINE.
SO, WE'RE NOT ASKING FOR APPROVAL OF THIS EVENING, THIS IS JUST INFORMATION ONCE WE GET THE FINAL PIECES OF THE LANGUAGE WORKED OUT. THEN WE'LL SHARE THAT OVER, MR. BRICE WILL TAKE REVIEW, BEFORE IT COMES AFTER THE JUNE MEETING. SOUNDS GOOD.
THANK YOU. >> MOVING ON TO ITEM -- FIVE FISSURES ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, UPDATE MR. MATT?
>> GOOD EVENING, BOARD OF TRUSTEES.
I'M HERE TO GIVE JUST A LITTLE SNAPSHOT OF OUR PLANS FOR FISSURES ELEMENTARY. I'LL BE COMING BACK THE NEXT SCHOOL BOARD MEETING WITH DETAILS AND PRESENTATION FOR THE FIRST DETERMINATION HEARING.
A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY ABOUT ISSUES ELEMENTARY, THE ORIGINAL SECTION WAS BUILT IN 1858. I DID A LITTLE TWO STORY BACK IN 1988, IT IS OUR ONLY BUILDING IN THE.
DOES NOT HAVE FIRE SPRINKLERS, IN THE BUILDING.
AND IT ALSO THE TWO STORY DOESN'T HAVE -- IN IT THAT HAS A LOT OF PROBLEMS. SCHEDULING STUDENTS IN THAT BUILDING.
IT'S NOT 80. THE CURRENT BUILDING HOLDS IN AT CAPACITY FORMED 50 STUDENTS, HOLD THIS UP FOR YOU GUYS CAN LOOK AT IT. SO, THIS IS THE CURRENT LAYOUT OF THE WHOLE PLOT, IT'S AN 8.8 ACRES.
WHAT WE PLANNED TO DO IS TAKE THIS AND VOILA.
[01:55:01]
WHAT WE DID WAS ABLE TO TAKE DEER CREEK AND SET IT RIGHT ON THEIR. SO, THAT SAVES US TIME AND MONEY. DOING THIS DESIGN.I WAS SURPRISED THAT DEER CREEK WAS PUT ON THEIR.
WHAT THAT ALSO DOES, IT INCREASES OUR STUDENT CAPACITY OF 700. SO, WITH THIS DESIGN, YOU'LL SEE THAT WE STILL NEED THE EXISTING GYM IN THE CAFETERIA WHICH IS RENOVATED AND EXPANDED ON BOTH OF THOSE.
IT INCREASES THE SAFETY FOR THE STAFF PARKING, THE OVERFLOW PARKING, AND THE APPARENT DROP OFF PICK UP.
THE CALCULUS OF THE BUILDING. WORCESTER CONSTRUCTION WON THE CONTRACT FOR CMC BUILD. SHE ALSO IS A DESIGN PARTNER, AND THIS IS GOING THROUGH THE PHASES, HERE IN THE FIRST PHASE, WE'LL DO THE PARENTS DROP OFF PICK UP.
AND PLAYGROUND AREA. WE'LL BUILD THE BUILDING, WELL THE STUDENTS ARE OCCUPIED HERE, IN THE SECTION.
ONCE THIS IS ALL COMPLETE, WILL TEAR DOWN THE ORIGINAL SECTION WHERE YOU CAN SEE -- HOW IT'S ALL GOING TO GO.
THIS IS A QUICK SNAPSHOT OF WHAT WE'RE GOING TO DO, IN THE PLANS TO DO. THESE ARE THE QUESTIONS I'LL BE COMING BACK HERE WITH A FULL PRESENTATION.
>> I'LL JUMP IN HERE, I JUST WANT TO COME AND COME AND YOUR TEAM ON THIS, WE'RE LUCKY TO BE IN THE FACILITIES, WHERE WE GOT THIS GREAT NEWS. I KNOW FISHERS ELEMENTARY HAS BEEN SOMETHING THAT HAS BEEN TALKED ABOUT FOR A LONG, LONG TIME. WHAT'S GONNA HAPPEN WITH IT.
WE HAVE A PLAN NOW. WE WERE MOST EXCITED TO HEAR THAT WE GET TO REUSE, ESSENTIALLY, THE DEER CREEK ELEMENTARY STRUCTURE THAT THE LAYOUT, THE DESIGN, DO YOU REMEMBER HOW MUCH THAT SAVED US IN SOFT COST TO BE ABLE TO USE
THAT? >> THE TOTAL SAVINGS WAS $500,000. THE LAND, BUT WE ALREADY OWN,
DESIGN, THE TIMING. >> CAN YOU SAY THAT A VALUE
LOUDER, RAIN TO THE MICROPHONE. >> IT'S A LITTLE OVER $500, 000, DOING IT THIS WAY. WE OWN THESE DESIGNS, AND SO, I WAS JUST SHOCKED. I PROBABLY SHOULD MYSELF, I WAS EXCITED WHEN I FIRST SAW THAT I COULDN'T IMAGINE ACRES THAT THE
DEER CREEK FACILITY. >> WHEN WE SAW THAT IT FIT ON
THAT FOOTPRINT, WE GOT CHILLS. >> THEN WE TALKED ABOUT THE MONEY, EVEN MORE EXCITING MOMENT.
IT'S NICE TO KNOW THAT'S GOING TO FIT THERE WERE GOING TO STAY IN OUR DOWNTOWN LOCATION I'LL JUST GO AHEAD AND DO THIS NOW.
SET OUT ON THE REDEVELOPMENT COMMISSION WE ALSO TALK TO THE CITY THEY'RE EXCITED ABOUT IT. WANT TO BE PART OF THE LANDSCAPE DOWN, THEY'RE THEY'RE EXCITED HAVE A TWO STORY NEWER MODERN LOOKING BUILDING. FIT RIGHT IN WITH EVERYTHING.
>> WE'RE GONNA HOPE TO WORK WITH THEM ON SOME OF THE LAYOUT, THE SAFETY CONSTRUCTION ENTRANCES, THEY APPEAR TO BE ON BOARD, AMID A TRYING HOLD THEM TO IT, SO, WE'RE REAL EXCITED ABOUT THIS THING. I THINK THE LAST THING I WANT TO MENTION, THERE'S SOMETHING PARTICULAR ABOUT THAT JIM, IN THE CAFETERIA, WHERE THERE'S A SPECIAL AREA IN THERE, IF YOU COULD TALK ABOUT THAT AT ALL, --
>> SURE, TWO YEARS AGO, THE STUDENTS DID A PAINTING ON THE OUTSIDE WALL OUT THERE. DRIVING BY LOOKS A LITTLE MIRACLE, WHEN YOU GET UP TO IT, YOU CAN SEE, THE SNOWFLAKES ON THERE ARE EACH KIDS THUMBPRINT. THEY USE THEIR THUMBPRINT AS A SNOWFLAKE. IN THIS DESIGN, HORRIBLE TO SAY THAT WE KEEP THIS PART OF THE BUILDING, THEY WERE VERY HAPPY BRIAN OVER THERE WAS ECSTATIC ABOUT IT.
IT HELPS OUT. >> THE POWERPOINT HERE THAT YOU HAVE IS PRETTY AWESOME. I HOPE PEOPLE WHO ARE ABLE TO LISTEN TAKE A LOOK AT THE INFORMATION IN HERE AND THE BOARD TAKE SOME TIME AND REALLY GOES THROUGH THIS.
I HAVE TO POINT OUT TO, THIS HAS BEEN ONE OF MY THINGS THAT HAVE REALLY CALLED LIKE A BABY OF MINE, FISHERS ELEMENTARY RIGHT ON THAT, SITE IN RENOVATING, IT SO I'M ECSTATIC FOR IT. I HAVE TO POINT OUT, ONE OF THE REAL EXCITING THINGS THAT I HEARD IN THAT MEETING WHEN WE HAD OUR COMMITTEE MEETING, IF WE WERE TO GO AND CAN'T YOU CAN CHIME IN HERE TO IF WE WERE TO GO AND BUILD THAT SCHOOL RIGHT THERE, DEER CREEK ALUM ENTRY, AND BUILD IT ON A SITE
[02:00:03]
SOMEWHERE RIGHT NOW, IT WOULD BE CLOSE TO $50 MILLION.IF WE HAD TO DO THAT RIGHT NOW. WITH THE COST OF CONSTRUCTION ALL THOSE KINDS OF THINGS. SO, IF WE HAD TO DO THAT --
>> 55 TO 60 OR WHAT I THINK THE ESTIMATE WAS.
TO BILL DEER CREEK AS IT IS NOW.
WOULD BE 55 TO $60 MILLION. >> I ALMOST NEED TO SAY THAT AGAIN. RIGHT NOW, WE'RE LOOKING ROUGHLY, AGAIN, THINGS CHANGE, AT 40 4692.
$44 MILLION, SO, IT'S NOT JUST A 500, 43,000 DOLLAR SAVINGS, I HOPE PEOPLE REALLY UNDERSTAND THAT THIS IS AN EXCEPTIONAL JOB BY MATT, KATIE IN THEIR TEAM. TO PUT SOMETHING TOGETHER THAT, WHEN WE HEAR THAT IF WE WERE TO DO THIS, IT WOULD BE 55 TO $60 MILLION. AND THAT'S NOT EVEN INCLUDING LAND. IF WE HAD TO GO AND MOVE IT WOULD BE LAND. I COMMEND YOU GUYS ON YOUR HARD WORK. PERSEVERING THROUGH, WORKING THROUGH YOUR TEAM. TO COME UP WITH THIS, I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE THE RIBBON CUTTING, WE'RE STILL MAYBE UNDERNEATH
$44 MILLION. >> SO, THANK YOU FOR THAT.
I WANT TO MAKE SURE I POINTED THAT OUT FOR PEOPLE TO HEAR
THAT. >> IT IS, THE WAY THE TIMELINE MOVES, COMING BACK NOVEMBER. FOR YOU TO VOTE ON IT.
WELCOME BACK WITH IT. NEXT BOARD MEETING.
>> I WANT TO SAY, THIS IS SUPER EXCITING.
HAVING BEEN ON BOARD FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS, I THINK THE LAST BOARD REALLY WENT THROUGH A LOT TO TRY AND GET TO THIS POINT. BOY, IT WOULD'VE BEEN GREAT TO KNOW A WHILE AGO THAT WE COULD GET ALL THE SAFETY THINGS MEANT, THAT WE COULD FIT ON THERE, THAT IT WOULD'VE SAVED US A WHOLE LOT OF CONVERSATION. EXCITING.
>> IT'S BEEN YEARS IN THE WORKS.
>> THAT'S COMMENDABLE TO YOU, AND YOUR STAFF.
AND WHAT YOU DID. WE'RE SO GRATEFUL FOR THAT.
THANK YOU. >> TIMING IS EVERYTHING, RIGHT?
>> THANKS, MET. >> THANK YOU SO MUCH.
>> MOVING MOVING TO ITEM NUMBER FIVE POINT 06, WITH KATIE
ALLEN. >>, I KNOW IT'S STILL EARLY, SO I'VE GOT MORE TIME THAN I INITIALLY PLANNED.
YOU THINK I'M GETTING? GOOD EVENING.
WAIT A MINUTE, I MOVED ON HERE, OKAY.
, JUST SO YOU KNOW THE FINANCIALS ARE THROUGH APRIL.
SO, EDUCATION FUND, THEY SHOULD LOOK A LITTLE BIT FAMILIAR, WHERE 26% HERE TODAY. THROUGH THE, YEAR 20, FIVE WERE RIGHT IN THE RANGE. NEXT SLIDE PLEASE.
AGAIN, MEASURING YOU CAN SEE REVENUE AND EXPENSE HERE, PRETTY TIGHT, CASH BALANCES PRETTY SIMILAR.
THOSE ARE THE KIND OF THINGS WE REALLY WANT TO SEE, WE'RE ON THE MARK, AT LEAST ON VERY COMFORTABLE MARK WHERE.
IT'S NOT FOR COMING IN 10% ABOVE SPEND, AND WE ALWAYS SEE A SHIFT FROM 16 MONTH PERIOD VERSUS THE SECOND, FIRST OF THE SCHOOL YEARS. THINGS LOOK DIFFERENT YEAR ON YEAR. ON THE NEXT SLIDE, WE'RE OVER BY ABOUT 1%. I MENTIONED LAST MONTH, ELEMENTARY STAFFING IN CASE SIX, WE KNOW THAT WILL FACTOR IN WHEN WE GET INTO NEXT SCHOOL YEAR, AND OUR REVENUES ARE SLIGHTLY OVER EXPECTED. ALL IN ALL, IF VERY COMFORTABLE. GOOD FIRST QUARTER.
OPERATIONS FUND, IS 30.1%. HERE TODAY, IF YOU REMEMBER, NEXT SLIDE, WE HAD LAST MONTH, WE WERE OVER BY 9%.
AND WE TALKED ABOUT HOW WE HAD PURCHASED ORDERS THAT COME OUT FOR AN ENTIRE MAINTENANCE PROJECT.
SO, AS A RESULT, THOSE EXPENDITURES -- WILL LEVEL OUT. LAST MONTH, WHERE IT 9%.
THIS MONTH, WE'RE AT 5.1. WE'RE GOING DOWN, WHICH MEANS IT'S DOING EXACTLY WHAT IT IS. AND THOSE ARE CURRENT EXPENSES ARE STILL IN LINE WHERE WE WANT THEM TO BE.
WERE PEOPLE EXPENSES, IF YOU WILL.
REFERENDUM, FOR A 24.2%. SLIGHTLY UNDER BENCHMARK YEAR TO DATE FOR THE FIRST QUARTER. NEXT SLIDE.
THANK YOU. YOU CAN SEE THERE, DECLINING CASH BALANCE WHICH WE DID TALK ABOUT LAST MONTH AS WELL.
ALTHOUGH, I'M SURE THE PUBLIC LISTENS TO MY REPORT WITH ALL SORTS OF INTEREST EVERY MONTH, I'M SURE IT BEARS REPEATING, BIG WERE SLIGHTLY UNDER BENCHMARK, ESSENTIALLY, LET'S REMEMBER, THE REDUCTION CASH BALANCE HERE OVER YOUR HAS TO DEAL WITH THE LITERACY ADOPTION THAT WE DID LAST YEAR.
AND WE USED TO OFFSET WHAT PARENTS HAD TO SPEND.
NEXT IS GOING TO BE THE FOOD SERVICE RUN.
[02:05:01]
YOU CAN SEE, 24% YEAR TO DATE EXPENSES.I KNOW WHEN YOU HEAR A FIGURE LIKE THAT, WE HAVE DELINQUENT TOTAL BOUNCES 116,000. I THINK WE ALL NEED TO REMEMBER, 22 BUILDINGS, IF YOU DON'T DIVIDE THAT OUT, IT'S FAIRLY INSIGNIFICANT IN THE INDIVIDUAL, BUT IT'S ALSO A SMALL AMOUNT WHEN YOU LOOK AT THE OVERALL OPERATION.
SO, YOU'RE TO DATE, A LITTLE BELOW EXPENSE.
THE REVENUE IS ALSO UP, WHICH IS GREAT, WE ALSO LOVE TO SEE THAT. BECAUSE THEN, WE GET TO REINVEST IN HER OWN KITCHENS, AN UPGRADE, WE WILL HAVE TO USE
OUR -- >> NEXT SLIDE IS JUST A LITTLE BIT LEGISLATIVE UPDATE RELATED TO FINANCIAL.
SO, TODAY, REALLY GREAT DAY UNTIL I GOT THE UPDATE FROM D.O.E. ON WHAT ABE WAS INCLUDED IN REGULAR MATERIALS.
SO, ONE OF THE THINGS THEY DID, WHICH I THINK WASN'T ANTICIPATED, WE CAN'T CHARGE DEVICES.
SO, THAT IS SOMETHING THAT'S A PRETTY SIGNIFICANT COST, ESPECIALLY NINE THROUGH 12, WE'RE GONNA HAVE SOME WORK TO DO TO IDENTIFY SOME THINGS AND FIGURE OUT WHAT WE'RE ABLE TO GENERATE WITH THE NUMBERS ARE GIVING US, IN AN ESTIMATE.
FOR REFERENCE, FUNDING AMOUNT PURSUANT OF THAT, EXCUSE ME, IN A DREAM WORLD, JEFF JUST ROLLED HIS EYES.
HE'LL NOT BE PRESIDENT OF MY FAN CLUB, IT'S $150.
SO, KEEP IN MIND, WHAT IS THAT GONNA COVER, OR HAVE TO SORT THAT OUT. WE WERE A LITTLE, I WAS A LITTLE WINDED WHEN I HEARD THAT TODAY.
WE CAN HAVE TO DEEP DIVE ON EVERYTHING WITHIN THOSE STUDENT FEES, TO DETERMINE WHAT COULD BE CHARGED FOR WHAT, I THINK A BIG RISK IS HALF OF OUR POPULATION DOES NOT USE OUR DEVICES. THEY BRING THEIR OWN.
SO, IF THEY ALL COME TO SCHOOL, AND WHAT IS TO PROVIDE A DEVICE FOR FREE, WHAT ARE THE ODDS WERE GONNA BUILDUP PROCURE THAT TIMELY? THERE'S JUST MORE UNPACKING, THIS IS THE FIRST GUIDANCE, HERE'S YOUR GUIDANCE, WE'LL KEEP GIVING YOU MORE. OCCASIONALLY, THEY CHANGE THEIR MIND. FROM DAY TODAY.
SOMETIMES THEY CHANGE THAT GUIDANCE DAY TODAY.
OTHER FINANCIAL PIECES THAT WERE IN PRACTICE, BUT WE DON'T NECESSARILY KNOW WHAT DEGREE, VOTER EXPANSION, WAS PART OF THE BILL, I'M NOT ANNOUNCING THIS IS EXPANDING RAISING IT FROM 100 AND 44 TO 20 OR 2:22, THEY ALSO REMOVE SOME AGAIN, IS THAT GONNA BE A PROBLEM? THAT REMAINS TO BE SEEN.
JUST ONE OF THOSE FACTORS WERE MONITORING.
NEXT SLIDE. >> TO ASK YOU A QUESTION.
RIGHT NOW, OUR LAPTOPS OR THEY CAN RENT.
YOU'RE SAYING NEXT YEAR, WE'RE NOT RENTING, WE'RE NOT DOING ANY OF THE THINGS, WE'RE GONNA AUTOMATICALLY --
>> I'M SAYING, WE LEGALLY CANNOT CHARGE WITH THE NEW GUIDANCE. BUT THEY CAN STILL BRING THEIR OWN, IF I'M A PARENT, AND YOU HAVE TO PROVIDE IT FOR FREE, WOULD HAVE TO BUY ANYONE? I THINK WE HAVE TO WORK THROUGH SOME OF THOSE. WE ALSO DON'T HAVE TO BUY 10,000 ADDITIONAL DEVICES. THAT WE DON'T NEED.
THERE'S A LOT OF UNPACKING TO DO, THIS IS ONE OF THE REASONS THAT WE CAN TELL YOU WE DON'T KNOW THAT THESE WILL BE READY IN JUNE, WE ARE GOING TO NEED TO UNPACK THIS.
AND REALLY, BE CLEAR IN OUR COMMUNICATION WITH FAMILIES ABOUT WHAT ELIGIBLE TO BE CHARGED.
EVERYTHING ISN'T REMOVED, A LOT OF THINGS ARE REMOVED.
>> OKAY, THANK YOU. >> YOU'RE WELCOME.
>> FOR YOUR INFORMATION, THE CALENDAR YEAR 2024, THE REFERENDUM FROM LEVY IS LIMITED TO 3% GROWTH.
THAT'S NEW. IT'S ONLY FOR NEXT YEAR, IT COULD BE EXTENDED INTO FUTURE YEARS, I THINK THEY'RE GONNA MONITOR THAT TO SEE HOW IT GOES.
AND ALSO, IN THE TIME OF THE MARKET IS GONNA GROW AND EXPAND THE WAY IT, DOES NEED TO STOP GAP TO GET US THROUGH.
THAT TIME. NOW THAT I WON'T VALUE THAT.
AND THEN THIS IS STANDARD ON THE PRODUCTION -- WHICH IS NOT HUGELY SIGNIFICANT, BUT WITH OUR SIZE IT IS.
AGAIN, THOSE ARE JUST FACTORS, WE CALCULATE OUT.
TO KNOW WHAT WE SEE OUR IMPACT WILL BE, IN FUTURE YEARS, MORE TO COME I'M SURE, THE GUIDANCE CHANGES.
WE HAVE ANOTHER LEGISLATIVE UPDATE I THINK ON FRIDAY.
WE'VE ALREADY HAD ONE, IT JUST KEEPS COMING.
THAT'LL HAVE. >> KATE ARE LEAVING TONIGHT TO GO BACK TO FORT WAYNE THROUGH I.S..
WELL, I'M GONNA BE YOU AT THE STORE.
WE'RE GONNA ASK AS MANY QUESTIONS AS WE CAN.
TO FIGURE OUT IF WE CAN GET MORE ANSWERS.
[02:10:02]
>> KNOWING SOME OF THESE CHALLENGES, I THINK OF THE CONTRACTS WE HAVE WITH SOME OF OUR VENDOR PARTNERS, ESPECIALLY IN THE TECHNOLOGY. IS IT AN OPPORTUNITY GO BACK
AND RENEGOTIATE? >> YOU KNOW, IT COULD ALSO BE AN OPPORTUNITY TO USE AN APPROPRIATION CAUSE.
WHICH I BRIEFLY TOOK SOME ADVICE ABOUT EARLIER.
I JUST THINK WE NEED TO KNOW EXACTLY WHAT'S IMPACTED, I THINK THE BIGGER FEAR WHEN I HEAR THAT, HOW DO WE QUANTIFY THE KIDS, THE FAMILIES, THAT COME TO SCHOOL.
-- THEY'RE EXPECTING A DEVICE.
I DON'T KNOW HOW WIDESPREAD THAT WILL BE.
WE CAN TALK ABOUT, THAT ANY EXPENSE OF, THE IPADS AND THE MACBOOK'S, I MEAN, IF YOU PROVIDE JUST USING 7000 AND $1,000 THAT $7 MILLION. I KNOW, THAT'S EXACTLY IT.
I DID SOMETHING LIKE THAT, SIMILAR, DR. ALBRIGHT, --
>> SO, YOU KNOW, I'M NOT SAYING THERE ISN'T A WAY, WHY WE USE A MACBOOK VERSUS DON'T, THERE'S SO MANY LAYERS TO THAT TO PEEL BACK. WE'RE GONNA BE HAVING SOME FUN.
>> BASED ON ALL THAT WE KNOW, WE CURRENTLY FUND THAT FALLS INTO THE CATEGORY OF THIS, WHAT IS THE COST FOR STUDENT WHERE
WE'RE AT CURRENTLY? >> WELL, IT VARIES.
BECAUSE OF THE LEVEL. IT'S GONNA VARY BY K FOR INTERMEDIATE, OBVIOUSLY, THEY WILL GET THROUGH 789 AND 12.
IT DEPENDS ON THE COURSES THEY'RE TAKING, -- WE HAVE TO UNPACK LIKE A PEA, THOSE OLD CREDIT FEES, WE HAVE TO GO THROUGH ALL OF THAT. WE'LL TRY TO IDENTIFY, K FOUR, WHICH IS PROBABLY THE EASIEST. WHAT THOSE ITEMS ARE, KEEP IN MIND, WILL CHARGE IS NOW WE HAVE.
THEY ARE OR RESOURCES THAT WE COVER THE COST FOR, AS A DISTRICT, WE DON'T PASS THAT ON THE KEEP THAT V MANAGEABLE.
RUGGED AFTER BRING IT DOWN BY LEVEL, WILL HAVE A DISTRICT AVERAGE OVERALL. I MEAN, JUST LOOKING AT THAT, $150, I MEAN, K FOR, WE'RE CLOSE TO TWO WITH THOSE DEVICES. I HAVE TO PULL, WE'RE GONNA HAVE TO GET TO BE A FOUNTAIN. CAN YOU GET A CHEAPER DEAL, CAN IS THE? I DON'T THINK ABOUT, CAN YOU LOOK AT THAT. I'M JUST THE MONEY PERSON.
I'M JUST ONE JEFF DOESN'T HAVE A SERVICE VOUCHER.
CAN'T SEND ANYTHING TO COME AFTER.
I'LL BE MENTIONING THAT WE LOOK AT OTHER OPTIONS OUT THERE.
THOSE MACBOOKS WERE PURCHASED NEW LAST YEAR.
WE'RE NOT GONNA TOSS THEM, WE STILL GET SEVERAL YEARS WORTH
OF LIFE OUT OF THEM AS WELL. THE >> THE CHALLENGE WITH THESE CHANGES, WE ENTERED INTO AGREEMENT, BASED ON THE LAW THAT WAS IN PLACE. NO, YOU'VE CHANGED IT, AND YOU KNOW REMOVED MY ABILITY, THE DISTRICT'S ABILITY, TO RECOUP FUNDS. WHAT FEELS A LITTLE BIT UNFAIR SHOULDN'T BE AT LEAST BE ABLE TO LIVE THE LIFE OF THESE AGREEMENTS THAT WE HAVE AND SECRECY GOING FORWARD.
KIND OF LIKE WHAT WE DID WITH TAX -- WITH THE DEBT PIECES CAME IN. WHAT WAS EXEMPTED AND NOT ACCEPT. IT'S THE SAME IDEA.
WE ARE LITERALLY JUST DID A PO, A MONTH AGO, FOR HIGH SCHOOL 700 THAT WE HAVE TO REPLACE. WHATEVER THE IPAD WERE.
THOSE ARE THE THINGS THAT MAKE IT A LITTLE FRUSTRATING, COULDN'T WE HAVE A PHASE IN. NOW, WE DON'T HAVE THOSE, WE'VE EXPANDED THOSE FUNDS OUT OF TEXTBOOK RENTAL.
WE DON'T HAVE A REVENUE SOURCE. WE HAVE TO PIECE ALL OF THAT TOGETHER. BUT THERE IS NO WAY, IN MY OPINION, WE CAN MAKE A SWITCH OF ANYTHING LIKE THAT, WITH DEVICES. FOR THE FALL.
THAT'S NOT GONNA HAPPEN. LET OFF THE TABLE.
WE'LL MAKE DO, AND FIGURED HOW WE SUPPLEMENT IT.
AND GO FORWARD. IF ANYTHING, WE'RE GONNA CHANGE WHAT WE'RE LOOKING AT THE FOLLOWING 24, 25 SCHOOL YEAR.
>> IS THAT FAIR MR. HENDERSON? >> NOW THAT HAVE SPREAD ENOUGH
HOLIDAY CHEER, WE NOTIFY NEW. >> ANY QUESTIONS?
>> NO, I THINK THAT IT FOR NOW. THANK YOU SO MUCH.
>> MOVING ON TO ITEM 5.07, FALLACY -- 02 POINT 10 HIRING AUTHORITIES. JUST MAKE ME DO THIS ON MY OWN THIS EVENING. SO, MAKE IT BIGGER, OKAY.
[02:15:03]
THERE WE GO. GOOD EVENING, BOARD.I WANT TO GIVE A QUICK REMINDER ON OUR APRIL 12TH BOARD MEETING. THE BOARD DID APPROVE THE EMERGENCY HIRING AUTHORITY. ALSO, REQUESTED, OKAY, YEAH THE MIC. IT'S DIFFICULT TO HEAR.
AS A REMINDER, ON APRIL 12TH, OUR LAST BOARD MEETING, THE BOARD APPROVED THE EMERGENCY HIRING AUTHORITY, AND ALSO REQUESTED REVISIONS TO THE LANGUAGE.
TO ADD SOME MORE SPECIFIC PARAMETERS.
SO, THIS POLICY WAS SENT BACK TO COMMITTEE, AND MR. RIVAL HELPED REVISE SOME LANGUAGE FOR US.
WITH THAT, I PRESENT A FIRST READ OUR NEWLY REVISED POLICY, WHICH IS G 02 POINT 10. ALSO AS A NEW TITLE, HIRING AUTHORITY. IN THAT POLICY, IT DOES PROVIDE MORE SPECIFIC WHICH THE BOARD REQUESTED.
SO, FOR EXAMPLE, IN THE SECOND PARAGRAPH, IT DOES DEFINE ON OCCASION, CORPORATION REQUEST ADVANCED HIRING FROM THE BOARD.
FOR THE LIMITED PURPOSE OF MAKING INITIAL OFFICERS EMPLOYMENT TO CERTIFY STAFF, AND NON-CERTIFIED SUPPORT STAFF. EXCLUDING ADMINISTRATORS.
TO PROVIDE THE SCHOOL CORPORATION WITH ADDITIONAL FLEXIBILITY. WITH THE MOST COMPETITIVE HIRING SEASONS. IT GOES ON TO REPEAT THAT, AND TO FIND ADDITIONAL PARAMETERS. SO, I PRESENT THAT TO YOU AS I READ, AND OPEN IT UP TO ANY QUESTIONS.
>> SO, JUST TO GET SOME CONTEXT TO THIS, SO, THIS WAS TAKING EXISTING PROCESSES, THAT ARE DONE APPROXIMATELY TWICE A YEAR BY THE ADMINISTRATION THAT COMES TO THE BOARD.
AND ASKS US FOR HIRING AUTHORITY DURING CERTAIN WINDOWS OF TIME. IN THE DISTRICT? PREDOMINATELY, SUMMERTIME AND THEN ALSO OVER THE WINTER BREAK? SO, RECOGNIZING THE FREQUENCY WITH WHICH THIS HAPPENS, WE BROUGHT IT FORWARD TO CUT OFF BY THIS INTO POLICY.
SO, THAT'S WHERE THIS GETS PULLED INTO, THIS WHOLE SEPARATE PARAGRAPH THAT'S ENTERED DOWN BELOW.
ESSENTIALLY, DOING JUST THAT. SO, WE'RE TAKING WHAT IS GENERALLY A REQUESTED PROCESS AND CODIFYING INTO POLICY.
THAT'S WHERE A LOT OF THAT ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE IS SET UP
IN THEIR. >> SO, ARE WE OPEN TO -- THIS IS INFORMATION, IF WE SAW SOME INFORMATION HERE WE THOUGHT A SENTENCE OR A WORD OR TO WOULD BE SUGGESTED TO CHANGE. WE CAN GIVE THAT RECOMMENDATION RIGHT NOW. SO, WHEN IT COMES BACK FOR THE SECOND READ, OR TO COME BACK, WOULD IT BE A SECOND READ? WITH NEWLY-NEW INFORMATION? OR IS THIS SOMETHING THAT WE NEED TO DISCUSS RIGHT NOW? IF WE'RE NOT, I DON'T KNOW IF WE'RE VOTING ON THIS RIGHT NOW TODAY, I WOULD LIKE TO MAKE A SUGGESTION, THERE WAS A SENTENCE IN THERE THAT I THINK, IN THE FIRST PARAGRAPH, I WANTED TO SEE THAT RE-WRITTEN A LITTLE BIT. I DIDN'T KNOW IF THAT'S PRESENTED NOW THAT WE WANT TO TAKE THOSE SUGGESTIONS.
>> I THINK YOU CAN MAKE YOUR SUGGESTIONS RIGHT NOW.
JUST IN AN OPEN CONVERSATION, AND THEN WHEN WE TAKE ACTION ON THIS ITEM, WE CAN MAKE A FORMAL MOTION TO AMEND THE POLICY AS
WRITTEN. >> OKAY, IN THAT FIRST PARAGRAPH, IT CURRENTLY, IN THE OLD VERSION, I WANT TO MAKE SURE I HAVE THE OLD VERSION CORRECT, AFTER IT SAYS RECOMMENDATION OF SUPERINTENDENT SAYS STAKEHOLDER INVOLVEMENT IN THE HIRING PROCESS WILL BE A PRIORITY IN THIS ELECTION OF BUILDING PRINCIPLES IN THIS DISTANT PRINCIPLES DEPENDING ON THE LEVEL OF NEED AND OR URGENCY.
IS THAT CURRENTLY WHAT IS BEING LOOKED AT? FOR A THIRD OTHER CHANGE AFTER THAT.
>> AS THAT CURRENTLY WOULD'VE REALLY HASN'T ONE OF THEM?
>> OKAY. I WAS WORKING ON SOME LANGUAGE, I WANTED TO REVISE IT PER THE CONVERSATION THAT WE HAD ANY OTHER BOARD MEETING. JUST BY READING THROUGH IT.
THAT IT WOULD RECOMMEND THAT WE CHANGE IT TO STAKEHOLDER INVOLVEMENT IN THE HIRING PROCESS WILL BE A PRIORITY IN THIS ELECTION, OF BUILDING PRINCIPLES, ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT, AND ANY POSITION AFTER THE REQUEST OF
THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES. >> SO, ESPECIALLY JUST THE STAKEHOLDER INVOLVEMENT. IF, --
I DON'T KNOW. >> CAN YOU READ THAT IT, SAY IT
ONE MORE TIME? >> SO, IT SAYS, YOU READ THE WHOLE BEGINNING, THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES AND THE POSITIVES THE WHOLE SOLE AUTHORITY TO EMPLOY ALL PERSONNEL, BASED ON THE RECOMMENDATION OF THE SUPERINTENDENT.
[02:20:02]
STAKEHOLDER INVOLVEMENT IN THE HIRING PROCESS WILL BE A PRIORITY IN THIS ELECTION OF BUILDING PRINCIPLES, ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENTS AND ANY POSITION AT THE REQUEST OF THEBOARD OF TRUSTEES. >> SO, WHEN YOU SAY AT THE REQUEST, ARE YOU SAYING THAT, AT ANY GIVEN TIME, IF WE'RE HIRING A TEACHER, YOU WANT TO MAKE A RECOMMENDATION THAT WE HAVE CERTAIN PEOPLE SITTING ON OUR HIRING?
WHAT EXACTLY DOES THAT MEAN. >> JUST AT THE DISCRETION OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES, DEPENDING ON WHAT THE POSITION IS, OR I PERSONALLY, WE'LL LOOK AT IT MORE SO IN SOME REGARD, KEY ROLE POSITIONS IN OUR DISTRICT.
LIKE AN ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT OR PRINCIPLE.
OR SOMEONE IN FINANCE DEPARTMENT.
OR IN ANOTHER KEY DEPARTMENT. IF, AT THE DISCRETION OF THE BOARD TASK FOR STICKLER TO BE THERE.
SO, YOU'RE ASKING THAT WE HAVE LAKE LIKE A PARENT OR COMMUNITY MEMBERS, ARE YOU WANTING TO TELL US WHO THE STAKEHOLDER IS,
I GUESS IT'S MY CLARITY? >> ALL RIGHT, I'M MORE LOOKING AT IT AS A LIAISON. SOMEONE THAT IS THERE AS WE'VE HAD IN THE PAST. WHEN HIRING, WE'VE HAD A BOARD MEMBER THAT'S BEEN IN SOME OF THE HIRING MEETINGS, WE'VE HAD, AND YOU KNOW, YOU CAN CHANGE IT TO BOARD MEMBER.
>> NO, I'M NOT SAYING BOARD MEMBER.
I'M JUST GONNA CLARIFY WHEN YOU SAY THAT THE BOARD CAN REQUEST THAT A STAKEHOLDER, I'M SAYING THAT YOU'RE SAYING YOU REQUEST PLEASE PUT A PARENT, OR PLEASE PUT A STUDENT, OR ARE YOU WANTING TO TELL US WHO THE STAKEHOLDERS SHOULD BE? PLEASE PUT MISS NELSON ON THE COMMITTEE WHEN YOU INTERVIEWED,
THAT'S WHAT I'M ASKING. >> I THINK IT'S UP FOR DISCUSSION. I THINK THE PROFESSIONALS, YOU GUYS ARE THE ADMINISTRATION. IT WOULD BE FOR U.S. TO DECIDE.
AS THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES, IT'S ON THEIR JUST AS IF OUR BOARD PRESIDENT SAYS, YOU KNOW, I THINK WE'D LIKE TO HAVE MR. ORR THERE, I DON'T KNOW. OR SOMETHING.
AND REQUESTS THAT, YOU'D HAVE THE OPTION TO SAY NO OR YES OR WHATEVER. I'M JUST SUGGESTING THAT
LANGUAGE. >> IN FULL TRANSPARENCY, WHEN I CAME ON AS SUPERINTENDENT, AND I KNOW THIS WASN'T THE CASE BEFORE, I MADE THE DECISION BECAUSE I FELT IT WAS IMPORTANT TO HAVE A BOARD MEMBER SIT ON THE INTERVIEWS FOR ANY OF THE STAFF WHO DIRECTLY REPORTED TO ME.
THAT WAS LIKE THE EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP TEAM.
THE CFO, THE CHIEF OPERATIONS OFFICER, ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT, THAT WAS SOMETHING THAT I DID, I FELT LIKE IT WAS IMPORTANT. ARE YOU SAYING THAT YOU WANT TO CONTINUE THAT, NOW YOU WANT A BOARD MEMBER SITTING ON WHEN WE HIRE TEACHERS OR WHEN WE HIRE, UNDER TRY TO GET CLARITY BEFORE
WE GET THIS OUT THERE. >> THE WAY I'M TURNING IT, EXCUSE ME, IT ALLOWS OPPORTUNITY TO STREAMLINE IT MORE. IN A SENSE, WHERE WE'RE LOOKING AT THIS, AND IT COMES EMERGENCY HIGHER HOWEVER WE'RE CALLING IT AT THIS POINT NOW IF YOU'RE GONNA PUT IT ON -- TO APPROVE AND WE DON'T APPROVE IT.
THIS GIVES INSIGHT TO STREAMLINE IT.
>> WE DON'T DO EMERGENCY HIRING FOR ADMINISTRATORS.
THAT'S WHY I'M CONFUSED. WE WOULDN'T BE HIRING IN ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT OR PRINCIPLE.
UNDER THE AUTHORITY, BECAUSE WE'VE CLEARLY SAID, EXCLUDING
ADMINISTRATORS. >> MAYBE IF I READ IT AGAIN.
IT'S MORE AS A LIAISON. IT'S SOMEONE THERE IS A LIAISON, STAKEHOLDER INVOLVEMENT IN THE HIRING PROCESS WILL BE APPROVED IN THE BUILDINGS PRINCIPLES, ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENTS AND ANY POSITION AT THE REQUEST OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES.
SO, IT'S ONLY ON THE STAKEHOLDER INVOLVEMENT AND ONLY ON A REQUEST. IT'S NOT LIKE THEY, WE WILL BE
DOING THIS ON EVERY POSITION. >> -- WERE THE LARGEST EMPLOYER IN FISSURES, THAT OPENS THE DOOR FOR A LOT OF STAKEHOLDER, WAY IN THE WEEDS.
I THINK THAT'S WAY TOO BROAD, I THINK YOU NEED TO BE A LOT MORE SPECIFIC IF YOU WANT MORE THAN PRINCIPLES AND A SOUP ASSISTANT
SOUPS. >> OKAY, WELCOME TO LISTEN TO
ANOTHER SUGGESTION. >> I WANT TO MAKE NO, THE TEXT THAT'S NOTED HERE IN BLACK PRINT, EXISTING POLICY.
WE DIDN'T CHANGE ANY OF. THAT LANGUAGE.
THE BLACK TEXT IS CURRENTLY THE POLICY.
THE ITEMS IN RED ARE THE REVISIONS.
THAT HAVE BEEN NOTED. SO, THE CURRENT POLICY SPEAKS TO BUILDING PRINCIPLES AND ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT.
THAT CURRENTLY -- CURRENT POLICY.
WE HAVE A TOUCH THAT. >> I THINK THAT UNDERSTOOD.
I THINK WE'RE LOOKING TO MAKE A SUGGESTION TO CHANGE THE CURRENT POLICY FOR CHANGING POLICY OVERALL.
OR CREATING ADDITIONS TO THE POLICY.
>> RIGHT, I THINK WHAT I'M UNDERSTANDING HERE, IT'S THE
[02:25:01]
IDEA THAT, AT THE BOARDS DISCRETION, IT'S NOT MANDATORY, IT'S NOT REQUIRED EVERY TIME, IF THERE WERE SOME NEED, I GUESS THAT'S DEPENDING ON THE POSITION.THIS WOULD THEN GIVE THE BOARD THE ABILITY TO SAY, WE'D LIKE TO BE INVOLVED, WE'D LIKE TO HAVE A STAKEHOLDER THERE A, PERSON THERE. SOMEBODY I DON'T KNOW MAYBE WE NEVER USE IT, BUT IT ALLOWS US THE OPTION TO BE THERE.
DURING WHAT WE'RE CALLING ADVANCED HIRING AUTHORITY, ONE OF THESE EMERGENCY HIRES ANY POTENTIAL BECAUSE OF THE FOLLOWING THE BOARD HAVE THE ABILITY TO REQUEST A STAKEHOLDER WITH THE TEACHERS THAT WE HAVE.
WE NEED TO HAVE THAT DISCUSSION WITH A FEW ASSOCIATIONS.
FIRST. I DON'T REALLY THINK, I THINK IT ADMINISTRATION, I MEAN, I KNOW YOU'RE SAYING BEFORE.
THAT WE CAN CLARIFY. >> I'M SAYING THAT A LOT OF DISCUSSION HERE, I THINK JUST FOR THE CLARITY OF EVERYONE INVOLVED, THE BEST THING TO DO THE REDISCUSS THE POLICY.
AND BRING IT BACK FOR THE SECOND READ NEXT MONTH.
>> EXCELLENT, I'M MAKING IT SURE, FOR CLARITY, THAT IS NOT THE INTENTION, AND THANK YOU FOR POINTING IT OUT.
NOT AT ALL DO I WANT TO SIT IN OR FEEL THAT WE SHOULD BE SITTING IN ON THE HIRING OF TEACHERS.
THIS IS MORE OF ADMINISTRATIVE TYPE POSITIONS.
>> I HAVE ADDITIONAL QUESTION IN THIS READ, WHERE IT SAYS ANY PERSONNEL STILL CONSIDER PERSONAL MISERY?
>> WHAT DO YOU MEAN? >> IF THEY WORK FOR US, THE
PERSONNEL. >> LAST SENTENCE, IN THE FIRST PARAGRAPH, IT'S THE LAST WORD. ANY PERSONAL.
I'M JUST CLARIFYING, IS SOMEBODY WHO'S PART TIME OR ON CONTRACT STILL COULDN'T CONSIDER PERSONAL?
>> NOT IF THEY'RE PROVIDED BY A THIRD PARTY.
>> IF THERE ARE EMPLOY, YES. BUT LIKE KATIE SAID, JULIE SNIFF A CONFUSION THAT GOODRUM DO TAKE IT BACK TO COMMITTEE, FIRST READ ANYWAYS, EXCELLENT WE CAN TAKE A LOOK AT IT MAKE ADJUSTMENTS BEFORE A SECOND READ, AND THEN TAKE ACTION AND
GREAT IDEA. WE'LL TAKE THAT BACK TO THE COMMITTEE, GREAT FEEDBACK. I PRESENT TO THE BOARD, J ZERO
[6. Action Items]
7.03. CONCUSSIONS AND SUDDEN CARDIAC ARREST, THIS IS A SECOND READ. IN THIS POLICY, WE ARE RESCINDING -- TO AUTOMATED EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATORS. AND JEEZ ARE TWO POINT 17 FOR TRAINING FOR COACHES. THOSE TWO ARE TO BE RESCINDED.AND INCLUDED IN THE REVISIONS MADE TWO J ZERO 7.03.
CONCUSSIONS AND SUDDEN CARDIAC ARREST.
IS THERE ANY INFORMATION IN THIS POLICY THAT CAN BE REVIEWED? AS A REFRESHER, OR FLIPPING THIS ONE A COUPLE TIMES, BECAUSE OF --
>> KIM, I'LL JUST AT YALE AMENDED JUST FRESH.
SENATE BILL 369 JUST GOT TIME BY THE GOVERNOR LAST WEEK, THAT'S NOW OFFICIAL LAW, WE'RE WAITING TO UNDERSTAND WHAT IMPLICATIONS THERE WOULD BE IN THAT.
I WOULD TELL YOU, LARGELY, THERE'S A LOT OF PERMISSIVE REQUIREMENTS REGARDING 80S, BUT NO MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS.
THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION IS GOING TO BE TAKING A SURVEY OF ALL THE DISTRICTS. UNDER UNDERSTANDING HOW MANY AID I.D.S, EACH DISTRICT EMPLOYEES.
POLICIES THEY HAVE AROUND THAT. FOR FURTHER GUIDANCE OF POTENTIAL LEGISLATIVE ACTIONS, AND FUTURE GENERAL ASSEMBLY SECTIONS. WITH REGARDS TO CARDIAC TRAINING, IT DID EXPAND ON THE FOLKS WHO HAD TO HAVE THAT TRAINING. PRIOR TO, I THOUGHT IT COACHES.
[02:30:05]
EXTRACURRICULAR LEADERS. AND BANDLEADERS, THEY'VE NOW EXPANDED THAT TO INCLUDE MUSIC AND DRAMA.AS WELL. THEY'VE EXPANDED THE SCOPE THERE. BUT WITH RESPECT TO 80S, THEY'VE GIVEN SOME GUIDANCE ON PLANS, IF YOU'RE GOING TO ADOPT PLANS IN THE DISTRICT. BUT THERE ARE NO MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS TO HAVE CERTAIN THRESHOLDS, I KNOW THAT SOMETHING THAT WE WERE MONITORING, AND TRYING TO
FIGURE OUT. >> RIGHT, ANY TEACHER APPLYING FOR THEIR INITIAL LICENSE FOR RENEWAL HAS TO GO THROUGH THAT TRAINING. THE CPR TRAINING, THAT INCLUDES HEIMLICH, AED TRAINING. WE CURRENTLY HAVE 49 AEDS AT OUR SCHOOL. I THINK WE'RE REALLY, REALLY GOOD POSITION. TO HAVE ALL OF OUR SCHOOLS
COVERED. >> I MOVE TO GIVE A MOTION ON THIS NOW. OKAY.
I MOVE TO APPROVE POLICY J ZERO 7.03, CONCUSSIONS AND SUDDEN
>> SECOND. >> I WOULD FINISH THE MOTION.
>> EMOJIS I MOVED TO APPROVE THE POLICY, CONCUSSIONS AND SUDDEN CARDIAC ARREST, G ZEROES TWO POINT 16, AUTOMATED EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATORS AND G 0217 FIRST AID TRAINING FOR COACHES AS PRESENTED ON THE SECOND READING.
>> JUST FOR CLARIFICATION, THOSE LAST TWO REMAIN, -- AND THE LAST TWO ARE BEING RESCINDED.
>> CALLING FOR A VOTE? >> THERE'S A DISCUSSION.
>> I JUST WANTED TO SAY WHAT I SAID THE LAST TIME, I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO ADD IN THE WORDS PLACED IN AND AROUND BUILDINGS.
JUST TO CLARIFY THAT THEY DON'T HAVE TO BE IN THE BUILDINGS, BUT THEY COULD BE ON THE FIELDS OR WHEREVER ELSE THERE NEEDED.
>> DO WE WANT TO CALL THAT A FRIENDLY AMENDMENT WITH THAT EXTRA LINE OF WORDING? I WOULD BE OKAY WITH AMENDING
MY MOTION. >> I THINK THAT SOUNDS FUN TO ME, IF WE CAN FIND A WAY PROCEDURALLY TO DO THAT.
I'VE GOT NO PROBLEM WITH IT. >> I MAKE MY MOTION TO AMEND MY
MOTION. >> WELL, YOU CAN JUST ALLOW SERUMS TO BE AN AMENDMENT TO YOUR MOTION, THEN CAN WE GET A
>> IT'S ALREADY DISCUSSION ON THAT?
PERFECT, THANK YOU. WITH THE AMENDMENT, THE FRIENDLY AMENDMENT. THANK YOU, CHRIS.
AND MOVING TO ACTION ITEMS. 6.02.
RADIO PROJECT, MR. JIMMY LAKE. >> GOOD EVENING, MADAM PRESIDENT, AND BOARD MEMBERS. AT THE FEBRUARY 8TH BOARD MEETING, I ASKED TO RECEIVE APPROVAL FROM THE BOARD TO ISSUE A REQUEST FOR PROPOSAL. TO SEEK A SOLUTION TO IMPROVE DISTRICTWIDE RADIO COMMUNICATION AND EQUIPMENT.
THE OBJECTIVE WAS TO PROVIDE A PROVIDER THAT BE ABLE TO MEET A THAT INCLUDE STANDARDIZED RADIO EQUIPMENT AND COMMUNICATION, IMPROVE INTEROPERABILITY AND COVERAGE IN BUILDINGS, OFFER LONG-RANGE COMMUNICATION CAPABILITIES FOR TRANSPORTATION NEEDS, ALLOWED ABILITY TO HAVE DIRECT CONNECTION TO SROS FROM ALL RADIOS. INCREASED DISTRICT CONNECTIVITY BETWEEN THE BUILDINGS, TRANSPORTATION AS OWES AND ADMINISTRATION. AND ALLOW DIRECT COMMIT CONNECTION TO HAMILTON COUNTY 9-1-1 CENTER.
AS A RESULT, RFP PROCESS THAT INCLUDED TECHNOLOGY, OPERATIONS, SAFETY, AND ALSO THE BUSINESS OFFICE, SPEAKING TO OTHERS SCHOOL DISTRICT, UTERUS WHERE THIS IS IDENTIFIED AS CONDUCT A DISTRICTWIDE RADIO UPDATE. THE CALLS FOR THIS UPDATE IS 2 MILLION $123,000 $701.55. BASICALLY, 2.1 MILLION.
WE HAVE COLLABORATED WITH MRS. DELVING TO CONFIRM THAT THE FUNDS WOULD COME FROM THE GENERAL OBLIGATION BOND.
[02:35:01]
WE ARE REMAKING RECOMMENDING -- FOR HAMILTON SOUTHEASTERN SCHOOLS RADIO PROJECT. THEY ARE HERE TODAY.WITH ALSO HAMILTON COUNTY 9-1-1.
WE ARE ASKING FOR YOUR PERMISSION THIS PROJECT AS PRESENTED. I HAVE A QUICK QUESTION.
KATIE, CAN YOU TALK ABOUT WHAT BONDS HOW ARE USING THOSE BONDS
TO PAY FOR THIS. >> I SURE CAN.
>> WHEN DOCTOR -- REORGANIZED UPON A DEPARTURE, AND THEN MR. JOHNSON WAS HIRED, AND THEN MR. LAKE I THINK WE WERE AWARE THAT THEY WERE GOING TO BE SOME EVALUATIONS THAT NEEDED TO TAKE PLACE, AND SOME INVESTMENT IN OUR SAFETY INFRASTRUCTURE. SO, WE ALLOCATED FUNDS WITHIN THE 2022 GIO BONDS, THE BOND THAT WAS ISSUED LAST YEAR.
TO BE ABLE TO FUND THIS PURCHASE.
I THINK, ACTUALLY, THIS ENDED UP COMING IN LOWER THAN WHAT WE ORIGINALLY HAD ALLOCATED. I ALSO MAY HAVE FAINTED WHEN I SAW THE PRICE, BUT ALSO, HAVING A HUSBAND WHO HAD TO OPERATE HIS OWN 9-1-1 CENTER WHEN HE WAS A POLICE CHIEF, UNDERSTAND THAT THAT INTEROPERABILITY IN THE FACT THAT WE'RE OPERATING IN ONE SYSTEM WAS VERY, VERY IMPORTANT.
YOU KNOW, FOR A LOT OF REASONS. I'M SURE MR. JOHNSON CAN SPEAK TO MUCH BETTER THAN I. IT WAS ALL 2022 GEO GROUNDS.
>> THANK YOU. >> COULD YOU SPEAK TO THE GENTLEMAN'S CONCERNS THEY SPOKE EARLIER?
>> YES, COME ON UP. WE HAD A RUBRIC, I'M SURE.
WE HAD A RUBRIC EVALUATION PROCESS, ONE OF THE ITEMS ON RUBRIC WAS A TRUNK SYSTEM. THAT WAS PART OF THE -- 20 TIMES WITHIN OUR RFP. THOSE WHO HAD IT, THAT ORGANIZATION THAT CAN MEET THAT STANDARD.
>> SURE, ONE OF THE THINGS I SAW WHEN WE STARTED THIS PROJECT WAS A RADIO SYSTEM THAT COULD BE USED ACROSS THE DISTRICT. WHERE I COME FROM, IN LAW ENFORCEMENT, IT TRUMPED RADIO SYSTEM IS WHAT WE USED.
IN THIS COUNTY, THE STATEWIDE RADIO SYSTEM MOTOROLA EQUIPMENT, -- WHEN I CAME INTO THIS JOB, THAT'S THE EXPERIENCE THAT I BROUGHT WITH ME.
AS WE SAW THIS PROJECT, WE COULDN'T NECESSARILY BUY INTO THE ACTUAL 9-1-1 SYSTEM. BECAUSE OF THE EXPENSE.
ONE SINGLE RADIO AND THAT SYSTEM, YOU COULD SPEND $10,000 ON ONE RADIO. THAT IS NOT CLEARLY OUR OBJECTIVE. AS WE BUILT THE IDEAS AROUND DISTRICTS THAT ARE OPERATING% DISTRICTWIDE, AND IT'S IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND, DISTRICTWIDE CURRENTLY, WE HAVE RADIOS. I DON'T KNOW THE GENERAL PUBLIC UNDERSTANDS HOW FREQUENTLY OUR BUILDINGS ARE ON RADIOS AND USING THEM. IN A DAY-TO-DAY OPERATION.
IN A MOVING RATHER BUILDING. THE LITTLE ON ANY CRITICAL INCENTIVE OR CRISIS. I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT TO NOTE, CURRENTLY, WE HAVE RADIO. WE HAVE RADIOS IN BUILDINGS.
ONE BUILDING HAS RADIOS TO WORK IN THAT BUILDING.
WHERE WE ARE TRYING TO CROSS INTO MORE RESPONSIVE SYSTEM IS ONE RADIO IN THIS BUILDING, CAN ACTUALLY REACH OUT AND TALK TO SOMEONE AND ANOTHER BUILDING. EXAMPLE IF WE HAD CHEERY -- WHO IS OVER OUR FIRE SYSTEMS. IF HE'S AT RIVERSIDE, AND SOMEONE AT DURBAN KEYS UP AND IS LOOKING FOR, HIM BECAUSE OF A FIRE ALARM GOING OFF, THEY CAN TALK.
CURRENTLY, THAT WE CAN'T DO THAT CURRENTLY.
WE ALSO HAVE AN EMERGENCY RADIO THAT TALKS TO OUR SROS.
WE HAVE BUS RADIOS THAT THE BUSES HAVE.
THEN WE HAVE BUILDING RADIOS THAT THE BUILDINGS USE.
SO, CURRENTLY TODAY, IF SOMEONE WANTS TO GET MESSAGES AROUND ALL OVER DIFFERENT PARTS AND PIECES, WE HAVE TO CARRY THREE RADIOS. WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT ONE SYSTEM, ONE SYSTEM WE HAVE TO LEAK OR PATCH OR SOMEHOW BUILD ANOTHER SYSTEM TO MAKE WORK, I WANT A SYSTEM THAT IS ACROSS THE BOARD, OPERATIONAL, FOR EVERYONE.
MORE IMPORTANTLY, WHEN WE HAVE THOSE CRITICAL INSTANCES, I WANT TO TAP INTO THE RESOURCES THAT WE HAVE.
I KNOW, I DON'T KNOW IF DIRECTOR HOMES BEHIND YOU LIKE TO SPEAK A LITTLE BIT OF SOME OF THE GOALS FOR COMMUNICATION CENTER, I KNOW THERE ARE SOME PLANS IN PLACE, MOTOROLA SYSTEM, AND THESE THINGS WILL PLUG IN AND GO RIGHT INTO OPERATION.
THAT'S IMPORTANT TO THE SCOPE OF THIS PROJECT.
IN TERMS OF THE TRUNK-ING IN THE RFP, IT WAS MENTIONED FIVE OR SIX TIMES, SPECIFICALLY ON PAGE 20 UNDER THE
[02:40:03]
SPECIFICATIONS WE SPECIFICALLY REQUESTED A SYSTEM THAT USES THE TRUNK IN TECHNOLOGY. THAT WAS REQUESTED.>> CHUNKING MEANS? >> BRING THEM ALTOGETHER.
>> I'M NOT A RADIO ENGINEER, MY UNDERSTANDING OF IT, AND -- FOLKS CAN TALK MORE ON THE TECH SIDE OF, IT A TRUNK SYSTEM, IF SOMEONE KEYS UP, IT'S GOING TO USE THE CHANNEL THAT'S AVAILABLE. NOT NECESSARILY ASSIGNED TO THE REPEATER THAT CLOSEST TO THAT RADIO, IT WOULD BE POSSIBLE FOR A HANDHELD RADIO TO DESIGN A SYSTEM OR.
SEARCH EVEN A HANDHELD RADIO, EMERGENCY ON THE PLAYGROUND, THE SECOND GRADE TEACHER CAN SWITCH OVER TO THE SRO CHANNEL.
AND CALL FOR AN SRO, IF THERE'S SOME NEED FOR THAT.
THAT SRO WILL HEAR IT, WHEREVER THEY ARE IN THE DISTRICT.
IT'S THE TRUNK THING THAT ALLOWS THEM TO SHOOT ALL THE WAY THERE ACROSS THE DISTRICT IS MY UNDERSTANDING.
>> IN LAYMAN'S TERM, ONE STOP SHOP?
THERE WILL BE IN ONE SPOT. >> THE CONVENTIONAL SYSTEM WOULD CAUSE IT'LL WORK, BUT A ROTARY PHONE WILL WORK, THIS TYPE OF TECHNOLOGY WILL ALLOW THEM FOR US TO LAUNCH ALL THE WAY ACROSS THE DISTRICT. WHERE IS CONVENTIONAL ENOUGH TO
RELAY TO GET ALL THE WAY ACROSS. >> THANK YOU FOR THAT CLARITY.
YEAH, AND WE HAVE ANY QUESTIONS FOR A 9-1-1 CENTER, DIRECTOR HUBS HERE, DIRECTOR OF THAT CENTER AND WE ALSO HAVE THE IRS SECURITY HERE TO MAYBE GET INTO THE WEEDS FROM THE CUSTOMER SERVICE SIDE. OR THERE ARE TECHNOLOGIES.
AND FIGURE OUT HOW WE CAN MOVE THIS THING FORWARD.
AND REALLY LEVEL UP OUR SAFETY GAME.
ANY QUESTIONS FOR, THEN THEY CAME?
>> HAVE YOU DONE ANY OTHER DISTRICTS BEFORE?
>> SO, IN THE PROPOSAL THAT I'VE GOTTEN FROM THEM, THERE WERE 23 I THINK K-12 CLIENTS FROM THEM, I CALLED SEVERAL.
IN FACT, I WILL BACKTRACKED AS A LITTLE BIT, COUPLE YEARS AGO WOULD LAUNCH ME INTO THIS, WORLD, A VERY CLOSE FRIEND OF MINE'S CHIEF OF POLICE FOR CENTER GROVE SCHOOLS, MY ALMA MATER IS -- BOTH OF THEM USE DISTRICTWIDE RADIO SYSTEMS WITH THIS MOTOROLA EQUIPMENT.
LIKE I SAID, THAT WAS MY BASEBOARD, TO GET THIS WHOLE PROJECT STARTED. THE RIPPLING TO EXAMPLES FROM K-12 FOLKS. YEAH, PERRYTOWN, SHIPPER A SIMILAR TO TWO HIGH SCHOOLS, SIMILAR IN ROMANCE, MORRIS TOWNSHIP ALSO SIMILAR IN THE TWO HIGH SCHOOLS.
WARREN TOWNSHIP I SPOKE TO, SPOKE TO I MENTIONED CENTER GROVE, OF ANOTHER. ONE IN THEIR CONFERENCE MAY BE LITTLE SMALLER. SIMILAR OPERATIONALLY.
WHO ELSE? CAR -- A FEW EXAMPLES -- I COULDN'T FIND A FEW EXAMPLES WITH THIS TRUNK SYSTEM THOSE DISSATISFIED WITH A.
THE BIGGEST COMPLAINT I GOT WAS MORE IN LINE WITH ISSUES OF THE SUPPLY CHAIN. THE ACTUAL EQUIPMENT IN THE COMMUNICATION RIVERVIEW FROM THE FOLKS THAT I TALKED TO.
>> THANK YOU. >> ALL RIGHT, NO MORE DISCUSSION? I DO HAVE A MOTION TO IMPROVE THE SCHOOLS RADIO PROJECT COMMUNICATION RECOMMENDATION TO PURCHASE COMMUNICATION INK EQUIPMENT FROM CRS WIRELESS AS
PRESENTED? >> I MOVE TO APPROVE THE SCHOOLS RADIO PROJECT RECOMMENDATION TO PURCHASE COMMUNICATION EQUIPMENT FROM IRAQ SWEAR-LESS AS PRESENTED.
>> SECOND. >> ANY OTHER FURTHER DISCUSSION?
>> I THINK I'D LIKE TO JUST SAY, IT'S CLEAR THAT WE FOLLOWED A PROCESS TO GET TO THIS POINT, THIS IS FOR THE SAFETY OF OUR DISTRICT. THE KIDS, THE TEACHERS, EVERYBODY THAT'S GOING TO MAKE A RESPONSE TIMES FASTER, MORE EFFICIENT. THE ABILITY TO COMMUNICATE ACROSS ALL THE DISTRICT BUILDINGS AND EVEN OUTSIDE THE BUILDINGS TO. AS HEROES, WHEREVER THEY MAY BE, BETWEEN BUILDINGS, IT'S GONNA MAKE US AGAIN A SAFER DISTRICT OVERALL, AND MORE EFFICIENT IN A LOT OF OTHER, WAYS USE THOSE RADIOS FOR ALL KINDS OF THINGS, BUSING.
APPRECIATE ALL OUR FOR THE DISCUSSION CALLING FOR A VOTE SIR -- SUZANNE THOMAS? I'M A YES. FOR PAST 70.
[02:45:12]
>> FIRST OFF, THANK YOU FOR HAVING US.
I'M TRUSTING A RADIO COMMUNICATION.
WE'VE DONE THIS ACROSS MOST OF THE COMMUNITIES, IN KENTUCKY.
NORTHERN INDIANA AS WELL. CORPORATION OF YOUR SIZE, SOMEWHAT SMALLER. WE ALSO DO A SIMILAR RADIO SYSTEMS FOR ALL OF INDIANA UNIVERSITY STATEWIDE, ACROSS -- THERE POLICE OFFICERS CAN TRAVEL WELL.
AND THEIR OPERATIONS. VERY SIMILAR TECHNOLOGY, SO, I APPRECIATE YOU TRUSTING US WITH THIS.
>> DO YOU FORESEE ANY SUPPLY CHAIN ISSUES, I KNOW YOU
BROUGHT IT UP? >> WE'LL KNOW MORE TOMORROW.
>> OKAY, SOUNDS GOOD. >> WE COULDN'T KNOW, IT'S GOTTEN BETTER BUT IT WAS A YEAR AGO.
BUT WE'RE STILL STRAINED. WE'RE ONE OF THE LARGEST IN THE COUNTRY. WE'LL DO OUR BEST.
WE APPRECIATE ALL THE WORK, THANKS MICHAEL JIMMY.
>> THANK, YOU GOOD REPORT. GLAD TO SEE THAT.
THANK YOU ALL. >> MOVING ON TO ITEM 6.03, HAMILTON SOUTHEASTERN INTERMEDIATE JUNIOR HIGH TRACK
REPLACEMENT. >> GOOD EVENING, AGAIN.
TONIGHT, I BRING FORWARD AN ACTION ITEM TO REPLACE THE TRACK AT THE HAMILTON SOUTHEASTERN INTERMEDIATE JUNIOR HIGH HIGH SCHOOL. THE TRACK WAS BUILT IN 2012, ABOUT EVERY FOUR YEARS, TOPCOAT ON THEIR, HELPS PRESERVE ITS LIFE. AND ALL THE RUNNING THAT GOES ON IT. FOR USAGE.
IN THE TRACKS USUALLY LAST BETWEEN 12 AND 15 YEARS WE FOUND THAT OVER THE COURSE OF THE LAST FALL, THROUGH INSPECTIONS. THIS TRACK NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. IT MOVED UP ON A TEN-YEAR PLAN.
AND WE NEED TO PASS THIS NOW, BECAUSE THE ASPHALT COMPANIES ARE OPEN. WHAT WE'RE GONNA DO, WE'RE GONNA REPLACE -- ALL THE WAY DOWN, AND REPLACE IT WITH A GRANULAR RUBBER, INSTEAD, THE CURRENT LONG STRAND RUBBER THAT ALSO HELPS WITH THE MOISTURE WICK.
DURING THAT TIME, WILL ALSO FIX UP ALL THE DRAINAGE AROUND THE TRACK. WE PUT IT OUT FOR BID, TWO BIDS, OUR COMPANY WAS THE MOST BID WITH 230 $887,000.
AND TONIGHT, I HAVE WITH ME, FRED -- FROM CONTEXT DESIGN. IF YOU HAVE ANY TECHNICAL QUESTIONS, OR DESIGN QUESTIONS, WE'D LIKE TO FOR THE BOARD TO
VOTE ON THIS TONIGHT. >> GO AHEAD.
>> SO, IT'S LIMITED TO JUST THE TRACK SURFACE, NOT ANY OF THE
SURROUNDING GROUNDS,? >> YIELDING WERE GETTING OUTSIDE OF THE TRACK IS THE DRAINAGE.
A LITTLE BE A LITTLE TALLER, AND THE DRAINAGE AROUND THAT AREA. BETTER BECAUSE WE FOUND IT.
WHEN WE FIRST INSTALLED IT. WE CAN DO BETTER.
>> WE'RE ESSENTIALLY -- THE PART THAT THE STUDENTS AND ATHLETES AND COACHES USE WILL, WHEN THIS IS ALL SAID AND DONE, IT WILL BE NEW, BUT THE SAME LAW.
SAME FOOTPRINT. >> SAME FOOTPRINT, ALL THAT.
LONG, TRUMP HIGH JUMP, ALL THAT STUFF.
>> THANK YOU. >> WITH THE MATERIAL CHANGES, I KNOW PREVIOUSLY STATED THAT EVERY FOUR YEARS IT'S AN UPDATE, AND 12 YEARS REPLACEMENT, WHERE DO YOU GUYS ENVISION THAT?
THE NEW MATERIAL USED? >> WE LOVE TO GET 15 YEARS OUT
OF IT. >> THAT MAKE SENSE, OKAY.
>> THAT WE'D LIKE TO DO. >> NO FURTHER QUESTIONS.
>> DO I HAVE A MOTION TO APPROVE?
>> I MOVE TO APPROVE THE REQUEST FOR THE CONTRACT TO REPLACE THE RUNNING TRACK, AND AGENCY INTERMEDIATE --
FOR COMPANIES AS PRESENTED. >> SECOND.
>> ANY FURTHER DISCUSSION? >> ALL RIGHT, CALL FOR VOTE.
